Can confirm, always get more than 1 bird friend. I was given a chicken in late fall (so no stores selling chickens, and I'm the only chicken farmer the family knows that even has a rooster), with no way to get another for them to have company. I raised them alone, and when I released them into the coop. They were terrified of the other chickens (even though she was already bigger than some of my most recent hens, cause they were some small breed), and ended up sitting with the pigeons. Took almost a full year before she stopped getting up with the pigeons, and figured out she was in fact. A chicken

we had a duck with our quails years ago, it was a resque and grew up with the quails (we hatched the quails around the same time as we got the duckling) and when the duck grew up it acted just like the quails xD making/mimicking the male quails calls! pretty sure he thought he was a weird quail, he even bobbed his head like a chicken/quail when walking around. loved that duck

Bit dark, but I had to bury the remnants of a duck because a marten got it. Those ducks were really happy to be able to roam around, but yeah…she’s right. Ducks are easy prey, especially domesticated ones. You might even say they’re sitting ducks.

It’s really important to feed all ducks the right diet, doesn’t matter if they’re yours or if they’re wild. It’s sadly not uncommon for wild ducks, who lives in ponds and gets fed bread all the time, to get a disease called angel wings. It’s a horrible disease that’s caused by malnutrition and causes the bones and feathers of the wing to be deformed

I have raised and kept ducks all my life, I have never bought duck feed. If you raise a single duck, they do just fine with the chickens. I free range my ducks through the day and bed them in a coop at night. You must be a hobby farm or just keep them as pets. Any real farmer will shake his head watching this. They need to roam and eat vegetation and bugs. The MOST common mistake is keeping them confined unable to get to grass.

Duck food is made so nutrient to make your duck not just healthy, but also filled with all the nutrients to make it's meat better. I mean come on, it's not cats or dogs, most of the times they don't get to live more than a year and get killed...
If I'd have a duck, I'd just give it food closer to what they eat in nature. That sounds like a right thing to do.

  • @mrpeachees2388

A species appropriate diet is not "duck feed." It would be whole foods, and nothing processed. That's like saying dog, and cat kibble is a species appropriate diet for dogs and cats, which it's not. Animals need real whole foods, and not "feed." It's equivalent of people eating cereal, or chips, with sprayed on supplements, and labeled as "healthy" food.

Didn't know it's illegal to buy a single duck. It's a stupid law. What if you've got let's say, 4 ducks but one dies. You want to replace said duck. No one should be forced into buying 2 ducks, just for the sake of buying 2. TS attempts to require the sale of 4 chicks in one purchase instead of 1 or 2. Why? They're greedy. I buy 2 at a time & no one gave me grief over it.

@@CharlieApples so basically you just repeated what I said? Either way that wasn’t really the point I was making.
Why are humans feeding ducks? They are wild animals. They will eat when the instinct tells them too. Making animals dependent on humans is what homeless stray dogs can’t survive without us. We ruin animals with our incessant desire to domesticate. I just think it’s super weird to put so much time and dedication into wild animals who are apart of an energy/food chain when there are humans still in dire need. Solve human problems before digging your fingers into other specie’s lives. That’s how I see it. Has nothing to do with the diet.

We had a single duck all my childhood her name was Jordan. We had 3 eggs only 1 hatched. We already had chickens so she lived with them( they REALLY liked her no clue why) and we coulnt find anyone to take her that didnt want to eat her.
We did get duck friends for her at one point but she didnt like them and would run to our rooster. The other ducks eventually got snatched by a fox i belive but jordan hung around till we gave the chickens away, she obvuosly went with them. As far as i know they lived in a free rang area the rest of their life. That or they got eaten

I never knew it was illegal to buy a single duck. When I was a kid my grandma took me to the farm and feed store and bought me a single duck as a pet. Best dang pet I've ever had. I spent more time with my duck than any other pet I've ever had. The only time we weren't together was when I was in school. He would follow me around everywhere I went. I could roam the neighborhood and he would be there waddling behind me. He was definitely my best friend ♡

When we got our rescue ducks egg and he hatched we were in a rush to make sure he survived. He was extremely small and his egg wasn’t even a normal size either so we were trying to get him to eat something and dry up as quick as possible so my dad drove to the pet store and they had no duck food so he asked if chicken food would work. They said yes so we just took it and began trying to feed him. Please make sure to do your research on a animal before getting it, only reason I didn’t was because we weren’t expecting to have a duck but didn’t want his egg to die so we took him in. We made sure to take him to the lake to visit other ducks and soon enough when he was grown he left. Hope he made it out safely :)

@@goosesnapcat nope, we found his egg next to a pathway and a lake. It wasn’t in a nest, and there were no other eggs around, and we weren’t even sure if he was a duck because the egg looked way too small. He was probably the runt of the group and was left behind but just in case we stood around close by for a bit and sure enough, no duck even looked in his direction. We already had experience in caring for birds and already had a incubator at home so we took him in and he did hatch and survive.
