@wawhiker Thank you wawhiker for your kind words and support! You and others encourage me to make more videos and I enjoy making them a lot. I look forward to seeing more of your fantastic videos as well my friend.
@spikesterg Thanks for your awesome comment! I appreciate it and I'm glad you enjoyed the video! I'm addicted to backpacking and proud to admit it! :-D I hope you get the chance to come back and backpack again sometime. I have a lot of great places to go this year so stay tuned for some more of the good stuff. Thanks man!
I have watching a few of your vids and WOW... Your adventures are AWESOME. Thanks so much for sharing. I'm taking some serious mental notes of places that I want to visit now.
Well done video! The Santa Fe wilderness is awesome and very scenic. Keep up the postings of your videos. Way cool backpacking trip! Thanks for sharing...
@medicjimr Thanks for your support medicjimr! It is some very mesmerizing country! I really enjoy making videos and squeezing all the pictures and footage into a 15 min is diffucult so I'm glad TH-cam increased the time limit to 15 minutes now instead of 10 minutes.
@OsitoTejano Thank you! I have not yet been to the Chama Canyon Wilderness but I have it down as one of the wilderness areas on my "list of epic adventures". This has been a rough year to get out backpacking with the dry conditions (as you know) so I might have to wait on the Chama Canyon Wilderness until next summer but I definately will get there and post a video of the adventure. I'm glad you enjoy watching my videos and I'll have a new video posted of the South San Juan area in a few days.
@rainbowhiker Thanks John. The Pecos Wilderness is a great place to get out of the heat and has plenty of water to keep you hydrated along the journey. My friend Terry is the guy you see in this video and he makes for a great backpacking companion. I will be going back to the Pecos Wilderness at the end of May to explore some new lakes and trails. More of the good stuff coming soon!
@promaster185 Thanks for the great comment! Since many of the places that I go backpacking is not known to most of the USA or the world for that matter, I think putting the name of each location or area is important so if anyone who may want to journey to these places will have somthing to go by. I appreciate you taking the time to watch my videos my friend!
We went at the end of May. Any earlier and there is a good change that you will be post-holing thru snow in certain areas. Lightning isn't a problem as long as you play it safe; Always check Weather. Below Tree Line - Try not set up your tent next to the Tallest trees in camp. Above Tree Line - Try to set up your tent in an area that is lower than surrounding hills,or peaks. Keep your backpack away from your local proximity as internal frame packs have parallel metal strips running up and down.
Thanks for the videos.I used to live in NM and we spent alot of time in the Pecos Wildernss flyfishing the rivers and mountain lakes.Catherine has some of the biggest cut throats Ive everseen.( a life saver after days of freeze dried meals) I really miss it. PS beware the mushrooms.
@kb9akp Thanks for watching and I appreciate your comment. I agree. New Mexico had a great year for snow fall early this year and more monsoon moisture in the summer. I was not sure what was crossing the pond there in the video.. I think it was either a beaver or a muskrat. it was too far away for us to accurately tell.
Awesome! Thanks for the great comment! Ok, so I think it is roughly about 6 miles from the TH to Stewart Lake via the Winsor Trail. I can check on my wilderness map in a few days when I get home to verify it. Then it is no more than 3 miles from Stewart Lake to Lake Katherine but they are steep miles so it will feel like it's longer! :-) But you'll make it and once you do, you'll be glad that you did! Good luck and happy hiking my friend!
@planofire1972 Thank you! Sounds like you have a very well thought out plan for hiking in the Pecos Wilderness. Winsor Trail this time of year is nice and especially at the end of the month, you will get to see the leaves on the trees changing color. There is only about a 3 week period to see that too. Fishing should be good @ Stewart Lake. I'd bring a "Kast-Master" lure or a Panther Martin (yellow w/ rred dots). I have not had a good oppertunity to fish Katherine.
@dunfamalb Mora Flats is a nice area. I have only been there one time but I enjoyed it very much. I'm planning on doing a 4 night 5 day backpacking trip back to the Pecos here at the end of May to Stewart lake, Johnson Lake, Pecos Baldy lake and then back down to Jacks creek. Thanks for the tip on the HD space blanket. I need to pick up one of those!
@LaneMaddox00 Thanks Lane! Ol' Wild Pecos Bill... Ol' tougher than leather! I have had people refer to me as a "mountain goat". What can I say.. I'm addicted to backpacking! Thanks for watching!
My friend and I started backpacking recently and began in the Gila and used your vids to get ready. Now were looking at doing the Winsor Trail to Lake Katherine. Could you give me an estimate on the number of miles between the TH to Stewart Lake and then to Katherine? Great videos, please keep'em coming!
@theyounglinggig I'm using a Henessy Hammock Expedition A-sym and my friend is using a Emo Hammock with a Kelty Noah's Tarp 9, for the shelter. H20 purification is the Katadyn Hiker. Your route plans sound great and doable. Bring a compass and Pecos Wilderness map 4 sure. I'd take a warm layer of clothing. If making a fire, bring a small folding saw as you will have to hike away from the lakes to find firewood. Winter hat is a must. Sunglasses 4 sure!! Tarp 4 the hammock. Have fun and enjoy!!
@planofire1972 You will probably encounter rain but no snow until mid to late Oct. Day temps will probably be in the 70's and night temps in the 40's... mabey upper 30's closer to Lake Katherine. Raspberries are usually ready for the pickins in mid July to the end of August so you might not see any. The fire restrictions for the Pecos Wilderness have been lifted too so you can fry up those fish over a campfire! Yeah! Good luck my friend and I hope you have a great trip!
@theyounglinggig A 5 day round trip total. 1st day from Winsor Creek T.H. to Stewart Lk. 2nd day to Johnson Lk. 3rd day to Horsetheif Meadow. 4th day to Pecos Baldy Lk., and 5th day back to Panchuera C.G. About 26 total miles. There is fish in those lakes too! I agree, the snow should all be melted by the end of May. Went in June to South San Juan Wilderness in southern CO. (higher laditude), and the trails above 10,500ft were covered in 3ft of snow. Post holeing with a backpack is unplesant. .
@theyounglinggig From Winsor Trailhead to Stewart Lake was about 5 - 5.5 mi. From Stewart to Lake Katherine was about 2 - 2.5. The trail is in great shape but is steep hiking at times especially up to Katherine. Bears and cougars exist but are not frequently seen. Deer, elk, raccoons, marmonts are more common. No free maps of this area that I know of but its essential to have a map of the area! Cheapest Pecos Wilderness map will be at the ranger station for $10. You won't be dissapointed!
@theyounglinggig The Gila Wilderness is currently in Stage I fire restrictions and may go to Stage II or completely close soon due to a lack of rain this year. I have debated the same ? this year too. Santa Fe is not observing any restrictions currently. I am going to the Pecos Wilderness here at the end of May to bag Lake Stewart, Johnson Lake and Pecos Baldy Lake in a 5 day trip and most of the snow should be melted by then. This year, I would recommend Santa Fe. Gila is epic but its too dry.
Great video. Four questions: 1) How crowded? (i.e., is everyone hitting the trails on weekends?) 2) How remote-feeling? 3) Fire building allowed? 4) How does this compare to the Gila Wilderness in the southwest? Thanks.
super sweet, you're living the dream, great production, awesome music collection, can't say enough positive, keep up the great posts:) more likes..thumbs up.
+Nature Inspired Snips n Snaps Thank you very much for the wonderful comment! Backpacking and just getting outside is my thing and it is what I do. I feel fortunate to be able to go to these beautiful places and experience being there.
Thanks for watching! I totally agree. I put this video together 7 years ago back when I had my first digital camera. Image stabilation technology back then wasn't so great and neither was the price. I'm using a MUCH BETTER camera these days.
@wawhiker

That video simply Rocked. I don't know how you do it squeeze so much great quality into a 15 minute video I was memorized by the views .
