Episode 18/18 Best known as the bad girl of the YBA generation, Tracey Emin is now one of the most successful artists working anywhere in the world. This film follows Emin at work in her studio as she prepares for an exhibition in Vienna, where her work is displayed alongside that of Egon Schiele, her artistic hero. In recent years Emin has shifted focus to more figurative work, creating paintings and sculptures that continue to explore her most intimate concerns. She speaks candidly about a life devoted to making art, as well as her ambitions for the future.
Not sure where everyone's hate is coming from. I'm an artist and have been for nearly 30 years. I struggle to make any money doing art yet continue to do it because I love it. I went to art school and I've put in my hours at the drawing table and easel...but I have no hate towards this woman. I felt nothing but joy and excitement watching this. The people who have nothing nice to say...get off the internet and make art. While you're busy saying mean things, the real artists are out getting shit done. Art is 90% hustle and 10% talent.

a significant part of her art is the fact that shes vulnerable through it in ways that a lot of people arent capable of conveying

Say what you will about Tracey Emin, but she seems to be doing what she loves and has passion about it, isn't that what we want from all artists, a passion and an idea that they convey into works of art that we might not agree with, but are works of art nonetheless.

Art is meant to provoke opinion and comment - for or against. Agreed there may be painters out there who produce beautiful works with tons of talent but do not divide and get people talking about them, and create drama . She does this in spades .
Her work invites strong opinion and therefore it is worthy . I think people miss this point .

What a sensitive portrayal of a maturing artist... I really like what Tracey Emin is becoming in this more mature phase of her career. The vulnerability, sense of space in her new work is arresting, and where there used to be all provocation, there is now a hardbitten tenderness... really wonderful. Thank you, Tracey.

Ncs Sravan checked your paintings. They are very very good, but you have much too learn. You are only a good painter when you respect others. No one really knows you because you boast about yourself, and you practically in love with yourself. Try being more relaxed and respectful and people will like you.

cant believe so many people have so many negative things to say about her and her work! i believe the work is beautiful to behold and obviously rich with personal meaning, particularly her figurative paintings. listening to her in this video leaves me without a doubt of her intelligence and passion. really confused as to how you could take anything else away from it :/
Why are people so negative? Because she is completely rubbish at drawing. And in her case a talented 8 year old actually can produce better drawings. She is representative of what is so wrong about our society... the celebrity culture. There is something deeply dishonest about her.
I think most people work very very hard each day to earn a living and see someone like Tracey doing what they do not see as art - neither do I to be honest - and they get angry. Human emotions to be honest are very strong. This is a typical rich persons stuff, I cannot afford it, but George Michael can.....She is not real, not real at all
I’m shocked by the overwhelmingly hateful responses! These aren’t critics-they are prudish Facebook fans. While neither this artist nor Egon Schiele are my cup of tea, I appreciated the intensity of dedication it takes to be a successful artist. Wasn’t that the point of this video? If it was narrated by an art historian, he could sum up this artist’s apparent conflict-she gave up relationships and family to pursue creative aspirations. It’s a form of expressionism-maybe not abstract enough for her critics.
Bravo Tracey Emin! I have great respect for Tracy as a thinking, conceptual artist. I don't understand or like some of her work, but I love and reach out to her other works. She pushes my boundaries and I want her to.
I actually like this. She's visually skilled and honest in her work. I find at least these painting tender and authentic.

It's really cool to have an inside look on the process of what makes art, art. I really like Tracey's vision. It's fascinating and skillful to be able to express your thoughts and feelings on canvas. I'm trying real hard in becoming a better writer and Tracey is an inspiration.

I enjoy Emin's work. It has character. She has a unique style and interesting concepts - many of which I can personally relate to - and this insight into the way she works is informative. However, I'm dismayed at many of the comments (for pts 1/2 and 2/2). They're disgusting and often mysogynistic. What's wrong with people? If you don't like it, don't look. Simple, really. But please spare us from the hate.

General message to all artists out there:
Be wary of general blanket statements.
Someone said here "art is 90% hustle, 10% talent"...
Right there I have to smile. One of my dear wonderful high school art teachers used to say, " being an artist is 1% your god given talent, and 99% blood sweat and tears"...
I remember, at 15, thinking what a loaded statement that is, e.g. 'god', 'talent', the exact numbers, what would the blood be about, how similar is that to the band blood sweat and tears and so on.
General statements are problematic because they divide, polarize, over simplify and get everything off track.
Here's this artist; she pops up on my TH-cam feed, I don't know her, I'm curious enough to watch and listen.
I'm still just being open to what she's all about.
But, be wary of your assumptions, be wary of the buzz around people. They may be making a big splash, but so what? Art history teaches us that time will tell, and us living artists will be dead and dust and hopefully our work will survive somewhere, in a wall or in a park or in some living persons heart.
Money, success, trends, the media, the vultures and leeches and hangers-on around the whole hype scene who want to make money on someone else, well, as I said, be wary.
The artist herself in this video is talking about how her figurative paintings are being perceived. Are they about sex? About love? What is love, what is sex etc. Fine questions for debates of course. But questions, and open discussions are really all we absolutely get from art because we don't get final judgements. There are no conclusive answers. Artists are people who are actively engaged in making pieces and series of artworks . There is no absolute legislation or law that will tell you what is good and what is crappy art. Art is a reflection of the disposition of the artist, and a reflection of the disposition of the viewer. Some viewers, simplemindedly, just want a painting to look as much as possible like a sharp photograph. Another viewer may judge a painting on how much it looks like a soft, out of focus photograph. Another artist may believe, for a time, that the whole point is to work big, be loose and use strong shapes that describe a space. Then a year later they might abandon that and do something opposite. There's no point in trying to judge everything with little assessments. Just enjoy your time on earth. Make art if that's your predilection. I'm only spending time writing this as a distraction and an avoidance of starting my next drawing. Let your work go out there in the world. Keep your mind open and again, please question yourself if you are wanting to champion one artist or condemn another. I'm going to check out this artist on the net and read some other reviews. Just for the sake of being more educated, not for getting to a point of judgement but just to feel more nourished.
I'll say one more thing; watching artists and media people scramble around and talk money and success is disconcerting to me as an artist, given the horribly dangerous times we live in. The expensively festooned galleries with their clean white walls and astronomical prices on whatever is hanging there, may well be soon under flood waters and everything ruined by mold. So think about the big things, artists. Think about the world facing destruction. It kind of puts the fancy money/ success/ hype/ fashion thing in context.

Art is such a game show a massive enabler of tax dogging and price rigging a big bloon of hot air, sometimes. Then other times it's a nice scene or an amazing idea. I like creativity, in general though I think art is such a unique industry that can't be quantified it's all in the eye of the beholder. Creativity also can't be quantified which is why it's so undervalued in business we always look for problems to be solved by engineering etc we never look for a new perspective. I think tracy is the real art work you can say what you like but look at the life she has created for her self.
If you are going to comment here please even try to understand an artist's work before you judge it. Artists are the most sincere people on the planet, otherwise such certainty would be frightening, boring or just plain stupid! (Actually, I might apply these sentences throughout TH-cam to most good contemporary artists)

Well she is a great hope for every untalented and unlucky artest who are not able to sell anything because of lack of skills
Reading through the comments (pity some had to be so hateful, vulgar and vicious), there is a bit of truth in most of them, but at the end of the day Lads and Ladies, she has made it and we can all be envious, at the least. She does NOT draw well (life drawing I would give a dismal 5 out of 10 and Schiele, who put agony and ecstasy in his drawings, may have smiled) and she probably knows it. But she also knows that her name is up there in her Nyon lights, for now and for always! She has an engaging personality, whether you find her ineloquent or not, and shares her knowledge on the need for self-promotion, having a business head and keeping abreast on technology in art (part 1 of this doc) as a pre-requesite for any success for an artist today. What do you all think of the work of Marlene Dumas, another leading female artist of the 21st century?

+Dante Caruso Paint. I don't think its possible to make a value judgement on someones concept. I feel that the "modern" notion that the concept is MORE important than the finished work itself has run its course. Perhaps Emin and Hirst et al. recognize the same, hence their attempts to reconnect with paint, clay etc. I always bristled at the tag "conceptual art"....I kind of feel like all or most art is conceptual in nature and implied in practice.

If Emin's work is considered masterful, then that standard has dropped through the floor. I see some artistry in her work, but there are a great many artists who outperform her and languish in basements collecting foodstamps. The befuddling verbiage and excuse of the concept being more important than the execution is ridiculous because it gives shit artists a platform to win Turner prizes. It's like in art school where your explanation of the conceptual framework for your "piece" can land you a 90, instead of a failing grade for poor execution.
What you just said was the empty verbiage I'm talking about. The concept is nothing without good execution. It is the responsibility of the artist to communicate the concept through execution. Unmade bed means nothing without concept. Take anyone not familiar with Emin, and have them analyse the "piece" and you will have a million different answers, which means the piece failed to communicate concept because the execution was mediocre. It is not the responsibility of the person viewing the piece to do additional research in order to understand the "piece". The art community has infected itself with such pretentiousness that it artificially injected appreciation into the "piece"...in this example, Unmade Bed. You can say ANYTHING about a piece of art that isn't executed well and establish a fake level of appreciation through grandiose esoteric verbiage and an atmosphere of mystery.

Simple, she was part of the group that Charles Saachi threw his money at.
Which basically gave that lot a career and healthy bank accounts, one or two from that group did some good stuff but the rest was just on the back of the 'sensation' exhibition.

Emin has joined the Art Market Biz....as have most contemporary so called artists. She's sensitive and intelligent...but has become way too ambitious. Despite what she says, I'm happy in my garret. I have freedom and creative space without all that chatter.

Tracey Emin's neon signage and tent pieces are what really makes her; vulnerability at its core, truth in its base form, merging with her aesthetic which is raw and amateurish in a good way. Her drawings and paintings are a little boring though and so is the idea to match her up with Schiele. I see the comparison, but it comes off as more an unnecessary uplifting of his work and not hers. I think if an exhibition is to compare work there really needs to be a very strong concept in the middle besides these two artists both making similar artworks. As for people saying "she sucks" that's fine but her paintings/drawings are not nearly as personal as her other work, give it a glance if you want.
The Sistine Chapel is still a model of art for many who comment here ... and Kandinsky, Picasso, Rothko, Frankenthaler, Boccioni, Macke, Warhol, Khalo ... and especially Pollock are still indecipherable puzzles for many ...
*Picasso* was a child prodigy; something he was seemingly content to deconstruct throughout the rest of his life.
The other artists you list, though of varying skill, similarly sought to redefine the picture plane and/or the application of their respective media.
*Emin*, on the other hand, is to be found throughout Universities and art-educational establishments, in the poorly-conceptualized, ineffectively-executed experimentations (and unjustified self-aggrandizement) of bourgeoisie students.
She is without a distinct voice.
She is without a discernible point.
She exemplifies a lot of the wishy-washy qualities which form the basis of the damaging stereotype many people still have of artists and art in general.
Many hardworking, technically-proficient artists actively strive to disabuse the public consciousness of so unrepresentative a notion, such as her lukewarm efforts have institutionalised.
To imply a fault in the deciphering of her work is to wilfully enable and strengthen that dissonance.
I watched this in hope of gaining some insight into an artist I've long held in contempt. Instead, I find my dislike deepening.
And to pre-empt accusations of misogyny (from anyone), compare her anatomy to that of *Julie Bell*'s work; or her line-work to that of *Rachel Dodson*.
Those two examples exhibit more creativity and skill, yet are considered lesser than *Emin*, by anyone not plugged into fantasy/comicbook culture (a subset of art often not granted the same artistic legitimacy as the conventional gallery setting).
The SIstine Chapel is an insurpasable wonder. Don`t sully its name by comparing it to scam artists.

The works of a number of artists are directly or indirectly influenced by Markl's works. One should not look for banal copies of copyists, but for an attitude that made Markl's works irrefutably the foundation of their works of art. Markl's work is uncompromising and addresses the center of issues, and we think that getting rid of Markl's influence, consciously or subconsciously, could be extremely difficult for many artists. His work is powerfull if we like it or not. And at the same time hardly any influence is so fought and controverted (or would it be more honest to say denied) by other artists as the influence of Markl's stand on these days art. The manner in which contemporary artists are exploited can be equated with the most brutal psychological abuse of any other derogatory relationship, certainly one of the bloodiest lines of business there is. Of course, [all] carefully hidden behind the mask of the finest, most human and most sensitive of all motifs, namely art.

That was a mention of Egon Schiele's pieces being in a delicate state. The curator apparently felt they needed to be in dark to preserve them as long as possible.

People who paint and understand the process of doing art understand Tracey Emin but those who don't, don't get it.
It would interesting to know how many of the comments, negative or positive, are from actual artists---which has become a somewhat fluid 'title.' I paint and I 'understand' her work and that is precisely why I think it is, at best, 2nd rate. The art world runs on unsubstantiated hype. It's like a constant parade of 'The Emperor's New Clothes.' It's understandable why folks who actually have something to say and have some talent for putting it on canvas or into sculpture would be a little put off. Where's that honest kid to say, "Hey, you're naked," when we need him?
