The key to not letting the wood dry out before you work is To Use wax on the end of each cut , Thats where moisture leaves the wood Fast, So Put any sort of Wax on the top and bottom and seal that stuff in!, Than work fast when you start your chizzeling or it will dry out and crack
Ok as an Aussie I feel a need to point out that "real" didgeridoos are made through the process of termites eating out the heart wood of tree limbs and trunks and a great many of the local Aboriginal didge cutters and suppliers work very hard to find and supply quality musical instruments. I've seen these made didges actually fracture under the harmonic resonance produced whilst playing and can only recommend that people buy authentic didges to support these amazing people.
@heidebill Each didgeridoo will be differetn based on Width of the wood and length, So slowly cutting the length off will be the only way to make sure you bring it to a perfect note. Whichever it is Closest to. Use a Tuner , Play the didgeridoo and if it is say a D# bring the length down a Pinch, Keep doing that until you get it perfect!
Awesome vid, man. I can hear all your excitement through your voice while you're explaining the way you build your didge. And... yes! You did inspire me to make very own tube. Thank you for that! Hope I'll manage a walnut tree ;)
nice sound... friends brought me didg`s from down under...eucalipt eaten by termites....but want to prepare them for the nice hollow sound... like the one`s you build mate... DRONE ON ! grts from Holland
Thanks Daniel, Very good lesson , I don't know if I will make the time build my own, But I have lots of pine and lots of determintation, Thanks again Bill
@heidebill You would be able to tune a PVC Didgeridoo Very easily, In terms of Wood The best way to tune it would be to. Hollow the wood, Put it back together, Put a mouth peice on.. Play the didgeridoo Find out what key its NEAR, then slowly Cut it down to fine tune it. SO cutting Off length to bring it to the perfect Note. It will be time consuming, but i think it would be the best way to get the Didgeridoo to a perfect Note.
Hey! Your didgeridoo is awesome! Good job man! I study Luthiery in Brazil and have searched one "step by step" to make a didgeridoo, and your's is the best! Clean, intuitive and fast! ...so, take care with the blades, ok?!
I was at my brothers house and cut a piece of Walnut, Now it is time to build the instrument, I am also taking pictures, and videos, and will build a video when I'm done Bill
@heidebill Hey! that's Great news! I hope your build goes really well!! I have a little advice to throw your way!, If your Set on making one out of a branch thats growing on a tree, there is a chance that the Piece will warp a bit when you split it in half! My didgeridoos in this video were both Branches and they both warped a little bit which made them a little harder to put back together! But If you cut down a Sappling tree that is Straight it won't Warp much or At all! makes it easier!
You will have to experiment with the roughness / Width and the Type of wood For for instruments Sound and Tonality, I am Very happy with the back pressure I can Circular breath without any trouble, although I only have the ones Ive built to compare it to. Thanks for the questions !
I built a Didgeridoo, from a piece of Plastic conduit I had laying around, I have the Circular breathing well underway, Hopefully it is not to cold in the next while , I want to head into the bush and cut a branch from one of my trees, and build one. Hope fully have it done for january, Going to Hawaii, to little beach and join the drum circle with my new Didgi bill
@heidebill awesome! i'm excited to see how it turns out! i've got two peices on my porch im going to start chizelling tomorrow!, Can't wait to get them done.! Make sure you send me the end result i'd love to see it finished!!
nice one !!! Im currently doing a Didge myself. lets see how it turns out. I finished the shape of it today and im gonna sand it tomorrow and the ncut in half. Wish me lucK
@heidebill thank you, if you make one and learn to play it You will thank yourself. After I'm done playing and breathing I am in such a peaceful place. Everybody should know what that feels like
Good question!!, - Beeswax!! , I called around to different stores and Eventually found, Bees Wax Candles. Next you take a good Size beezwax Chunk and keep it in your pocket on a hot day, or play with it in your hands , What ever you can do to make it slowly soften, When it's soft enough you Mold it to your Didge and let it cool down. make sure it's SEALED. I prefer to make a Small Volcano style mouthpiece, gives Room for nose and Chin, and you can make it really durable.
yes bamboo didges are very simple to make and have an ok sound, but you need to make sure the hollow is the right size inside. you will need to make a mouth piece for it too.
Sounds Great! It isn't like he destroyed a forest looking for a singular branch. The tree provided the raw material to him. The branch was taken with respect as he stated. Are we not also part of nature? I'd say the intent was good.
Hi Daniel! This is a really cool video and I'm going to do a performance soon but I don't have any pine trees where I live. Is it possible I use bamboos to make this? Please reply soon :) Thanks
So I was thinking about recycling Christmas trees after the holidays and making them in to didges. Any thoughts about this? It's still pine; not a limb but a trunk instead... Any way just wondering what you thought. I always feel bad that so many threes just get thrown away you know.
Hey great video, one question though how long did the chiseling part take? Because I'm thinking about making one but I don't know if I should use a chisel or just use a router instead. thanks, Joe
Hi! Great video. Did you dry the wood before all the cuts and carvings? Recently found an eucalyptus branch, since its my first time doing it, i dont know if i have to wait for it to dry completely before cut it in half... And if i have to, What would be the best way to do it ? Thanks!
@danabuffington Hey , thanks so much for sharing I'm going to look them up and have a listen, I hope one day I'll find a cool band like that to be a part of. again thanks a lot!
hey man, is there any wood i should look for other than pine (I'm located in new york.) We have pine here but i'm wondering if anything might have a better tone or what

100% agree as an indigenous Australian I'm not sure if I agree with this.
You made this look soooo easy. Im going out tomorrow with friends and finding a good branch to do this. Thanks man!

You just earned yourself a new subscriber!
What kind of polyutherane did you use?
Thanks Buddy, I used Minwax, Waterproof Urethane.

thanks, Joe
Our man here needs a work bench.
liked the video thanks
In your experience, can you tune a didgeridoo to a specific note, eg "A"
Then could you build three , A,D,E
Bill
How do you arrange the key note ?
How did you split the wood? Did you saw it?
pants on the ground @ 2:31
vary cool ,did you cut and gut glue fresh or maybe a cure before hand?
I was worried about this chesel near your bare foot
Same
Hey just wondering
... A luthier said not necessary to have completely smooth inside, as the little 'bumps' enhance the harmonics according to him?
Genial. ;)
How you split it? or cut in a half??
Bandsaw. Go to a carpenter shop and ask for help
@RuthyPepps Thank you very much :)
cool i love it, but i was thinking how you do the mouthpiece ? @danielvallieres555
hey man, is there any wood i should look for other than pine (I'm located in new york.) We have pine here but i'm wondering if anything might have a better tone or what
@geekabyte84 Thank you much friend
Just wondering did you let the pine dry before begining any of the work?
Ok so, did you dry the wood out before making this?
make sure you get a non toxic ''food grade'' poly urethane!
yuo should mention how you split the wood...
@drcar176 Thanks man!
did you split the bamboo to make a didgeridoo?
ALAN URIEL LOPEZ FLORES MEXICO WRYKYA
should try envirotex to seal next time, it is more natural and environmentally friendly
I'm a thinkin' maybe rubber bands and a lot of them would be better than worm-gear band clamps.
sooo much weed. lol not a bad thing but damn. I can't wait to pick mine up tomorrow.
Thats not naturaly made becaues you have to find a hollow tree and chop it
thanks a lot!! bro
