    That’s crazy, yesterday when FordBoss did his first thoughts on Ox-cetane he said that he wanted someone with a diesel to try it and I immediately thought of you because of your pre-DEF diesel and long commute, behold, that came true. I’m excited for the results.

      @@ccdimage It's a little of both. Confirmation bias is more the built on the idea you put effort into it and hope it works so much you think it does. The placebo effect is when you take something that literally does nothing and claim you see the results you were told to. The nocebo effect is also when you see negative side effects from a fake drug or product even though it really did nothing.

    I use Ox-Cetane in my car and it works. I have noticed way better performance, improvements with my miles per gallon, my car really gets up accelerates much quicker. My gas stretches longer because I do a lot of driving showing houses and with my other job as well. Even when traveling the gas needle does not move a lot like it use to prior to using this. I highly recommend using this because it does what it says. And the way gas prices have been its worth it. All I can is try it definitely not snake oil. That depends on if you lived in the country or the city, lots of country stations had a diesel pump off to the side of the store. It would have been around 13.9 cents at the time you’re referencing 28.9 cent gas. Gas stations near lakes used to sell white gas which is what everybody ran in their outboard motors because it didn’t have lead in it and wouldn’t foul the plugs. Everybody used that same white gas in their Coleman lanterns and stoves too because it was less expensive than the Coleman fuel in a gallon can.

    Lately I’ve noticed that snake oil fuel economy products are the craze because of higher fuel prices.
    Back in the eighties when gas prices had risen substantially (80 something cents a gallon),there were all kinds of fuel economy products flooding the market. Since at the time I worked at a service station so I got to see a lot of fuel economy gimmicks.
    One customer had a water injection kit installed under the hood of his Cadillac which consisted of a huge mounted glass jar and a small hose going from it to the air filter canister.
    I drive a small economy car with a small displacement engine and a manual transmission. That makes for the perfect combination to get great fuel economy.

      Yeah the FTC actually did testing on a lot of these fuel products a long while back. They found that while they do something, the results are basically only measurable and completely unnoticeable to the drivers. In theory they should work better the more worn out your car is and the more carbon buildup there is, but even still, it shouldn't effect much. When your motor is wearing out it's wearing out.

    As retired law enforcement that worked a lot of traffic enforcement I am mesmerized by car cam recordings of traffic accidents, as while I might have investigated thousand traffic accidents, I saw very few actually happen. What is obvious is people drive way to fast while also not paying attention to other drivers on the road. They also make left turns not being able to even see on coming traffic, apparently just hoping no cars are coming. There is also a large number of people that believe that other drivers are required to be courteous and react to their poor driving, and if not they will often force their way into a lane, cause (or nearly cause) an accident and then direct their anger on the driver that was simply driving straight in a lane. IOW it simply much safer to be courteous to idiot drivers, and simply don't take their foolishness personally, because the whole point of driving is arriving unscathed at your destination; and because you can't win a pissing contest.

    Hi Ray, given the quality of today's diesel, a boost of the cetane number does allow a diesel engine run more efficiently, and it does reduce particulate matter.

    • @peted5217
      @peted5217 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Verifying diesel cetane number requires lab testing. Only long term use w/accurate figures and use notes could give an inkling as to an additives benefits. If you have access to Premium Diesel's 45-55 cetane, use several tanks to see what it does for MPG. Switch back to 40-46 cetane fuel with chosen additives for comparison

      @Darth Vader higher cetane no. should lower NoX formation if chemists R 2 believed. I agree that any changes in perf or mpg would require lab equipment to verify as they'd B miniscule. Realistically, wouldn't higher cetane fuel be the norm if it produced noticed improvement ?

    Another aspect of allowing trucks to merge is with Semi Trucks the method I have been informed of is to flash your high beams twice to indicate that the truck has enough room in front of them to get over into your lane and the thank you for is to activate the brake lights briefly twice. I appreciate that alternate method for doing these things. Also great content again and I must second MJAC casari's comment. I greatly appreciate all your alternate methods of describing things.
    Something else you could maybe explain is if it matters when a fuel additive is added to a tank or not. I prefer adding things prior to filling the tank to ensure an even distribution of the product but what I don't know is if it even matters.

      I don't think people seem to realise that when the price of fuel goes up it goes up for everyone so all businesses that rely on fuel have to put their prices up for the services they provide. A plumber needs fuel for his van but if it costs $10 more to get to a job he just factors that in to his pricing for the job. Every other plumber is going to have to do the same and the only thing that's going to put anyone out of business is competition for that work not fuel prices. Just because the fuel price went up doesn't mean people stop needing plumbing work done.There are plumbers around here that have been in business 40+ years and they didn't set their prices in stone and give up the moment one of their suppliers prices went up. As a business you try to operate as efficiently as possible to make the most money you can but all the competition are paying the same basic commodity prices be it for fuel or copper pipe. If Ray really wanted to save money he could just choose not to commute in a 6.something litre gas guzzler. All the bulk buying and fuel additives might make pennies worth of difference. I drive a van and still get 42mpg. There really is no need for such a massive engine to plod along in rush hour traffic. I've driven hatchbacks that get close to 80mpg. If all it needs to do is get your ass from A to B there are much better ways of doing it. Something that big is fine for the rare occasion you need to tow heavy loads but when ever you aren't doing that it's just burning money especially when taking an unnecessary detour to rubberneck at a traffic jam.

    Cetane boosters are good, it will help make sure the combustion process works as expected. Similar to the octane boosters, or running higher octane fuels for gas engines. If the fuel you've been running is already blended to a high enough Cetane/Octane for the engine then you won't see much of an improvement. I would prefer to see that they claim an actual Cetane number improvement per dosage. The diesel market in the US is not as well regulated for cetane numbers, and its exceptionally rare to find a station that actually will list Cetane rating on the pump. From what I've read in the past, cetane numbers over 50 rarely have any significant benefit, but cetane numbers under 40 can cause less than ideal combustion. Most fuel in the US market is around 42-45 cetane, with a minimum spec of 40. In European markets the minimum cetane is 46.
    I've got a 6L powerstroke and a 3L bluetec in my two vehicles, the bluetec has a DPF filter but is old enough to not have the DEF system. I definitely notice an improvement with a cetane treatment in the bluetec, more than anything in the frequency and duration of the DPF regens. In the truck, i mostly just notice a little less black smoke puffs unless I'm just flat out flooring it, so I assume the combustion process is just running a bit more complete.
    I run the amsoil diesel treatment product, but have also used the ford/motorcraft one. It has 2 dosage levels, to either get +4 cetane or +7 cetane. I'll occassionally run the higher dosage for a tank or two, but honestly I see the benefits from the lower dose, and minimal gains from the higher one.
    Cetane boosters aren't snake oil, but they have a diminishing returns depending on the fuel you are running.

      I've read your comment and tried to do some research about it and yes it does seem that they actually work. However the one you referred to (Diesel Cetane Boost from AMsOil) is incredibly hard to get for us here in Europe. Could it be because of its chemical composition (that doesn't meet eu regulation)? Do you know by any chance what do they put in that stuff or what is it made of?

    • @Robert-S-
      @Robert-S- 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jedanObicanMish I honestly would expect that the lack of availability in the European market is due to the higher minimum cetane rating required for diesel in Europe. Numbers above 50 have little benefit for most diesel engines, and European minimum standard for cetane is 51. JLM Lubricants is a European market brand that has a very well regarded product selection including quite a few diesel specific products. Even they only offer intermittent use fuel treatment products, which just leads me to believe that sub optimal cetane levels just aren't really a problem in Europe.

    Funny story about signaling on the highway... I was following a Mercedes down the highway and he was swerving through traffic, never once signaling. He got off the highway at the same exit as me and pulled into a gas station. I pulled in to the same station and parked at the pump across from him. I said, "that's a nice car". He said, "thanks". I then said, "I'd think a car that nice would come with turn signals". He responded better than I thought. He raised a finger, telling me I'm #1. What a nice guy.

    A few thoughts on this.. i think the liquid just prevents cavitation and aeration as mentioned on the bottle due to it's consistency (you've mentioned that it's sticky/gooey) maybe that's why you get an improvement on mpg? Better fuel distribution equates to better performance jn engines be it diesel or gasoline, with less cavitation and less foamed diesel after the pump you get more consistent delivery and that's why the improvement.
    Also if you want to get more reliable results try using a dashcam with gps and speed logging or other means of recording speed and starts. That will give you a better view of how you drive and thus you can exclude the placebo effect of you manipulating the gas pedal differently.

    Ray, you should work with TH-cam's Project Farm to run tests on that new product.
    Regarding your troll complaining about using your phone to record while driving, you are both right. What he is talking about is "distracted driving" which you can be ticketed for in most states, although usually only if a cop witnesses you both doing something like swerving carelessly and using your phone at the same time. Here in California using the phone while driving is specifically a ticketable offense (see below). An argument for that law was a study that showed using the phone while driving is equal to drunk driving in terms of increased accidents. But an argument against the law is that there are a million other distractions while driving, as you noted. Anyone commuting in California can confirm it. I've seen a woman putting on makeup while driving, as well as a guy eating a bowl of cereal with a spoon. I have no idea what third hand either was using to steer!
    It does remind me though, just how aggressive they are here writing tickets for using the phone while driving. Hands free use is okay... So it's just when you're holding the phone.
    A young lady I know got ticketed by the highway patrol for using her phone. The sad part was she wasn't talking or recording with it. She was using an app on the phone for driving directions to a court house where she was heading to pay a fine for a speeding ticket she had gotten earlier! It probably didn't help that she drives an arrest-me red Mustang. The cop wasn't sympathetic, so she got another ticket that probably cost $300 or more in fines and fees.

In regards to holding mobile phones, the citizens of New South Wales Australia, of which I am one are not allowed to hold a mobile phone under any circumstances whilst in the drivers seat of a car with the keys in the ignition. Also we have cameras installed on posts on some of our freeways to detect this kind of activity. If you are pulled up for random breath testing and decide to show your licence on your mobile phone instead of digging for your wallet you must turn off your car, apply the handbrake and remove your keys from the ignition before doing so. When you see the way some people drive you can understand why the rules are brought in. Pretty scary when you see an oncoming vehicle cross over to your side of the road because the idiot driver was texting or checking his messages. It has happened to me on a 70mph road.

We're talking increasing your horse power rating by a few fractions of a percent and only less than half a mile to the gallon better than before. Most vehicles you can pull the high beam turn indicator to flash your lights for your courteous jester ! I use Rev X Distance plus its an excellent diesel additive fuel preservative .In CA people frown on the diesel smoke. It has eliminated that too in my tractors. Good review.

      While true, in a lot of places that's technically worthy of a ticket if a cop is having a bad day. They'll be especially picky if they think you're trying to warn others about the presence of a cop. Revenue >> safety! It's also sometimes hard to catch, and can look like you hit a bump or similar rather than being intentional. The long change of state is less ambiguous.
      Over here, the "thankyou" to a truck behind is opposing indicators a couple of times (left, right, left, right or similar). In front, same as Ray mentioned.

    For the last five years (100,000 miles) I've been adding 2 Stroke oil to my diesel at about 0.4% - 250ml in the 68L tank in my small 4x4 SUV. This has the effect of increasing the cetane rating very slightly. While the fuel consumption is only marginally improved, the engine noise is radically altered - much less of a diesel rattle and sounds more like a car than a tractor. Exhaust is cleaner and there's no smoke on high rev acceleration. It may all be placebo, but a smoke-free, free-reving diesel at 170,000 miles seems pretty good to me and there has been no obvious down-side. My long-term average fuel consumption is 42mpg (Imperial); 35MPG (US); 6.7L/100km - again, that seems pretty good for a family size 4x4 SUV.

      This was old practice with diesel fuel pumps, I did it also after advice of an older diesel expert, ...........I doubt the use with the technology of common rail ????

    • @rb9580
      @rb9580 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@frankgeeraerts6243 Lots of change to the technology of getting the diesel into the cylinder, but the physics of the actual combustion hasn't changed, which is where the 2SO and the change to the cetane rating comes in, in terms of igniting sharper and burning slightly hotter and cleaner. So still relevant for a modern diesel.

    I ran a cetane booster in my diesel Passat for several months. I found the fuel economy was marginally better but when you take into account the cost of the product you're not saving any money at all. It did however idle better and accelerate smoother so I can get on board with the claim it cleans the fuel system internals.

    light communication over here is typically done by flashing your high beams two or three times. it's quicker than turning your headlights on and off also faster change in state typically grab attention easier. We also do the hazard blinking to thank the car behind you alternatively you can blink left - right alternating a few times since the hazard blinker switch is can be awkward to reach while driving in some cars

    Nothing beats Seafoam. My diesel van got quieter, is more responsive, and the mpg went up. It's now doing 70 miles per Imperial gallon, so just over 58 per U.S. Gallon (4.04 Litres per 100km)

    Years ago I was introduced to REV X oil additive. A mechanic said it would help with a 2000 7.3 sticky injectors. I could not afford to replace the injectors but I really needed the injectors to work till I got the $$ saved up. I added the REV Z every time I did an oil change. Injectors would go into failure at about 4k and oil would be renewed with more REV Z. If I left out the REV Z at the oil change the injectors would not operate properly.
    4 Years and 150k miles later I decided that they just had to be done . Some products really do work with some vehicles.
    Might just have to give this a try.

    When not using the banana scale, mileage is litres per 100km, which for you is ~16 to 18 litres per 100km. That's about an 8.5 on the fuel pig scale. Thanks for sharing!

    Ray buddy, in the old days some old-school semi-truck drivers swear that putting a gallon of 180-190 proof moonshine in their 100-gallon diesel tanks not only did they say it thinned out the mixture and gave them 50 more RPM but also cleaned all the carbon and sludge out of everything and thus improved fuel economy. This product may be a similar thing, but I would not try drinking it if I was you. LMAO PS: I think that SeaFoam started out this same way and originally was for diesel trucks for the same purpose to clean and restore fuel economy, it also worked well on restaurant deep fryers to remove decade-old baked-on grease. Just an FYI and Keep up the good work.

    Regularly cleaning the MAF might help to reduce the consumption and useing Injector Cleaner is more effective than making diesel fuel's cetane num higher.

    Cetane is the opposite effect as octane. Instead of raising the flashpoint like octane in gas it lowers the flash point. improving the compression ignition of the fuel. My old Suburban 6.2 diesel loved the stuff.

    My Tundra high beam switch has a passing indication feature where normally to turn on the high beams you would push the lever forward...pulling the lever back momentarily turns on the headlights(if they're off) until the lever is released....I also use this feature to let people (especially truck drivers) know it's safe to merge ahead of me.

    Sometimes using cleaners to clean a old engine makes things worse because the seals are worn out and the carbon build up prevents oil leaks as well as other combustion issues would be interesting to see a scope test before and after using the product to see how well it works @Rainman Ray's Repairs
