  • France is known around the world for its food, culture and quality of life but not so much for its sense of humour, which can often leave foreigners nonplussed. How much of that is due to jokes being lost in translation and how much of it is simply cultural? In this episode of French Connections Plus, Genie Godula and Florence Villeminot explore French humour and hopefully get a laugh out of it!

It didn't stand the test of time (for me), but when I was a kid (the very last years of communism in eastern Europe) my family and myself (and pretty much all the rest of Poland) were in love with Louis de Funès and his whole Gendarme series:)

Stand up has only been around for the past decade in France? Paul Taylor, France wasn't born when you moved there!

Can someone please tell me how to pronounce the person’s name who first mentioned the idea of french humor? I don’t understand how to write it. it’s at 1:24

His name is Voltaire. Say "Volt" like in english. Next "aire" like the "air" in "fair". Then to have a perfect pronunciation you can do the french "r". But even if you don't use it it will be perfectly understable :).
He was a great french philospher and writer of the XVII - XVIIIth centuries (le siècle des Lumières). We study and read his work at school. He especially wrote a "pamphlet" (lampoon) entitled "De l'horrible danger de la lecture" very virulent (and funny) against the Church, which was very powerful at this time (I can only advise you to read it, it's a little complicated but very interesting).
His work, along the others philosophers of his time (les philosophes des Lumières), is very important to know to understand the Révolution française, and the french society of today.

For me most humor has to have a “get it?” French humor has no wit or sophistication. It’s just physical humor or insult. No cleverness involved.

Lol there are plenty of French humorists who make sketches on social and political issues, ike Desproges or Waly Dia, or on daily life situations, with absolutely no physical humor or insults

Hard to export? De Funes movies are classics all throughout (non-Anglo) Europe!

Thanks for the appreciation. These Anglo-Saxons think something works only if it works for them.

I love the intros on this. Do you know what the song is during the intro? Sounds like a remixed Edith Piaf song?

Wrong! French humor is #Unsophisticated After 2 French boyfriends and a grandmother, it’s more like goofy lil kid humor -nothing intellectual about it. A turn-off for an American

If you speak French, listen to Pierre Desproges. You’ll think differently thereafter.

Oh yeah sure, because "That's what she said" is so sophisticated 🤔😆
