Some twelve years ago, here in Mexico City, we could enjoy a one-man show of Pierre Soulages...some 70 paintings, from early 40´s to early 2000´s...all his life. I always thought he is a major name of european "informelle" painting, among other big figures as Hartung or the controversial Mathieu... to be there, in the museum, gazing at the very works I used to admire in my books, was a radical experience that shocked me. It happened to me before, just once to this level: when Edvard Munch´s exhibition in 1988. Long life to the immortal master.
Watching the museum personnel setting up the large paintings under the supervision of Pierre Soulages, I realize that one has to become a respected "famous artist" to have so much input into directing the ideal setup for hanging the work. Art is a serious business for those who really understand it. In lesser venues very little attention is placed on how art is displayed (the room layout and the position on a wall) and also how it is illuminated. Those nuanced considerations are beyond the typical gallery that features artists' works. An artist has little or no say in what happens to his/her art. Soulage is art with a capital "A" = Art.
I had no idea of this artists existence until now. I see the abstract expressionist stylistic language in much of the work so it's hard to know who did what first. I see Franz Klein and Motherwell 8n his work or is it quite the opposite I am wondering.
I can only hope to see his work in person the way the colors speak to me is breathtaking
Magnifique

I was able to see the Soulages Collection at the Fabre museum in Montpellier in 2022. I think it is a permanent exhibit now.

Then was born,
Saw the white pure light and life was born
