There are some amazing budget Android phones about, and I say that as an iPhone 11 Pro owner, and iPhone user since the iPhone 3G. In the UK a Poco M3 is about £140. In order to test some apps I'm developing, I recently bought a new Nokia 7.2 for £150 with specs in the same sort of ballpark: Snapdragon 660, 4GB RAM. Honestly I'm blown away by the hardware and build quality (matte glass back like my iPhone). If I dropped my iPhone down the stairs tomorrow I could easily use this as my daily driver until I got it replaced. It's pretty responsive and is an Android One device which means no crapware, and an upgrade from Android 10 to 11 is imminient.
Yeah, while they of course aren't on par with the flagships phones, you get quite a lot of phone for ~200 dollars nowadays. Goes to show just how far technology has progressed in that aspect in the last decade

I was always a flagship user but last summer i decided to buy the Xiaomi redmi note 9 pro. Im telling you apart from the camera in low light environment the phone is absolutely a beast. You cannot tell its a budget phone when doing classic smartphone things like browsing the web or multitasking, Apps load instantly and it has never failed me. For 95% of the world population a flagship android or an iPhone is overkill. They just don't know it yet because they haven't tried a cheaper alternative.
In India , we get the m3 with 6gb ram and i installed gcam on mine and it has worked wonders for my camera the photos have really good details when clicked from the gcam app
well this is only if you cant afford the more expensive stuff, but when you are actually looking at buying something more expensive reviews are very useful to you to gauge which is the best choice in those upper price ranges
Sweet spot is 250-300 bucks. Redmi 9 Pro, Realme 6 Pro, Motorolla G9 Plus. Funny thing is, they all have a micro SD card slot, dual sim, headphone jack, fingerprint scanner and face recognition. Realme also has a 90Hz display and a fast 30 watt charger. But I'm not sure that you can get it in the US or Canada.
This video was super helpful .... I use the M3 and before buying it I couldn't find one good review on youtube but then I bought the phone know that I have it ...... I have so many M3 review on for you page 😭 but I geuss it's a nice phone

video idea for the main channel: you guys come up with a useful scoring system and compare lots of differently priced phones to find the average price/performance sweetspot. i know it's a lot of work but it would scratch our itch for good tech we could also afford.
If the Pinephone was more responsive and it had a camera from at least 2015 I would prefer it to any Android phone (I wouldn't even want an iPhone if it was free).
@@RoshiGaming As far as I know the hardware is out. You get the developer kit or fully assembled for end users. Not sure if it's in stock or the state of the software.
That nuu phone is a carbon copy, specs, design, included case and all, of the Samsung galaxy a21s. I am not joking, they are identical, even the camera layout and bezels.
If you want something in the same price range as the M3 with a better (and less ugly looking) camera and phone body - The Redmi Note 8 is also pretty amazing. Slightly worse battery and cpu performance though. Another tip - It's pretty easy to install custom OS's on pretty much all of these MIUI phones and most of 'em even run on Android 11. You can also push the display refresh rate from 60 to eg. 75Hz if you feel like it. Great stuff. o/
I can confirm that I did buy the POCO M3. and unfortunately had to return it. It appears that NA carriers are stopping the support for the 3G frequency's and that's what is on the POCO
Take a look at the UMIDIGI A5/A7/A9 Pro series of phones. Similar price point, stock Android, OK camera. I ended up with an A5 Pro (then an A9 pro after 2 years of dropping my phone without a case) because they had a very wide range of frequency compatibility on the Canadian spectrum.
My Moto G stylus actually has the same specs as the Poco, save for the battery (mine is 4000mah), and I got it for 178 as part of an upgrade deal. Is actually an extremely responsive phone at least for me, and it's great for what I need it for. It's got Android 10, and really is unbeatable for the price I paid for it. Or at least it was as I got it over a year ago
Alright, seeing these two phones from relatively unknown brands I would love to see them compared to more popular offerings in this price range, especially by Motorola.
>relatively unknown brands Wut, the Poco is from Xiaomi, the 3rd biggest phone brand in therm of market share int he world, just closely behind apple and samsung. They are way, way more popular than Motorola
I'm rocking a Xiaomi redmi 8(4/128 version) and I paid less than $130 for it brand new. I've used it for over a year now and it still perfoms amazing. Thing is, if I ever break to screen, I'll just buy a new one lol. Just got the new UI update too, Xiaomi gives at least 2 years of support. (4 on flagships).
I was looking for a cheap Android phone a few months ago, but I also wanted a more compact one, iPhone SE size. They simply don't seem to exist; they are all huge with relatively low res screens. So I ended up just buying an iPhone SE, my first ever Apple product. Makers of cheap Android phones: make a $150 iPhone SE sized phone, there's a huge potential market there! Great to see Xiaomi bring back that bright colored grippy plastic from Nokia's Lumias for the backside though. I never understood why that fell out of fashion in favour of slippy metal or glass that doesn't feel as good in your hand.

2:30 Rocking with a case like this on my Honor Play for 2.5 years now and no regret it all lol. And it feels way better than no case to me (plastic phone).
I got a Pocophone X3 last year , it had good reviews and I didn't want to spend a fortune as I don't use one regularly , well I love it so much that I use it way more often than any other phone I had before .

he said A-lee-X-a just so that he doesn't trigger their Alexa now that's funny
I was about to comment the same thing!
Latest live stream with Linus that I saw had Alexa sounding a bit needy. Time and time again Alexa triggered even though they said nothing remotely sounding like Alexa, whereupon Linus would go "Shut up Alexa I'm not talking to you!"
He has done it several times before

I got my mom a Poco M3, it has been a game changer. She's so happy about her new device (she used to have a MiA1)
Mia1 ist still ok, it even has android 10
Been using Moto for all my smart phone life and have had no issues with missing features. Granted Im not a camera user, social media consumer. But I'm happy with what it does haha.
“How the hell are they making these for $130”
Chinese labor always provides
Bruh
Apple uses child labor, but their prices are still high 😅 (Ps. I'm joking. Every company has child labor in a way or another...)
Your fancy iPhone is probably built on the same Chinese assembly line as this thing, so, labor costs are the same for both.
That is very true, but the engineers are also pretty underpaid
Xiaomi is also subsidized by the CCP.
The M3 has fantastic value for a phone.
The x3 is better and affordable
@Aditya Bhattacharya the x3 has a 732g chip with 6-8 gb ram plus 64-128 storage and 120 Hz refresh rate ... man it cant get any better than that..
@Aditya Bhattacharya damn that's heart breaking man. I wish it was in my country but imma try and ship it to my country

I've been rocking a p10 lite, and when i finally feel like changing i'm definitely not going high end, that's an amazing amount of phone for the price.
If only Daddy Sam felt like doing a mid-low range fold i might be tempted. (nice joke right?)
10:23 if it can take good pictures of my home assignment its a good camera
@Sayan De i have the same phone right here, and i recommend you using the 64 megapixel mode on the main camera always when your trying to get an amazing result + adobe lightroom mobile and you can get crazy results. I promise, but when just casual picture that you want fast and look good already just straight up use GCAM.
(The miui stock photo editor has also sick picture profiles, it's totally valid to use it & i can show you some results if you want to see some of em).
@Sayan De oh thats okay, sorry bud
@Sayan De how does them run?, Ive been wondering about trashing Miui, to install pixel/stock Android Roms but i think performance/battery performance will decrease
@Sayan De i might consider it, i hate ads in Miui, it's so Bad coming from Apple devices
i highly recommend pixel experience rom i still use my redmi note 4
Goes to show just how far technology has progressed in that aspect in the last decade
bought the poco m3 for my dad as fathers day gift his happy using it!! great phone for daily usage

I daily a Motorola Moto G Power, switched over from the 2020 iPhone SE and I'm pretty happy with it. It's an $180 phone that's pretty respectable for the price
Love to see linus speaking about budget phone that many people like.
Huh...what a coincidence that I bought the POCO M3 3 days earlier and I just saw this video on my recommendation.
its not a coincidence my friend, they are watching u...
So what are your impressions? I'm thinking about getting it.
@@Gadzinisko It's mediocre, definitely not the best, has a big battery though. The only downside that I think is the quality of the camera, if you tinker with it, it can produce some good results.
@@camehere1228 Do you however feel like you got your money's worth?
I've also read that you can improve pictures with alternative camera app.
@@Gadzinisko Yeah, since taking pictures or videos really wasn't the main reason I bought it. If you ever find a better option, then you should take that instead of the POCO M3.

1:03 I think you mispronounced "Anti-static" :/
I really like reviews of cheaper stuff, it actually becomes a review rather than just showing off
well this is only if you cant afford the more expensive stuff, but when you are actually looking at buying something more expensive reviews are very useful to you to gauge which is the best choice in those upper price ranges
@@glowner7878 Of course. I was referring to the videos showing hundred thousand dollar servers and ssds and similar

Only thing I hate about videos like these is that the prices in their links are NEVER the same as what they claim. It's always like an extra $30-60+ difference
The price varies depending on the site and it might change but there are many being sold in my country for 110€ so it's not a fake price
I miss having an IR blaster on my phone I used to use my LG as a remote when I had it back in the day

That POCO M3 isn't $130 at all - it's $180 or $200 in those links... only the NUU G5 seems to be $150... hmmm.
It's 130$ from aliexpress and some sellers even have local warehouses.
This very morning it was only 90€ in Europe (108$) and it is often at 130$ on Aliexpress and Gearbest
@@hojnikb no they dont - its 140+ shipping for a month and a half to the US - show me where else I can find it.

Naw I got a pinephone and am suffering the early adopter life rn... Linux is life!!
still waiting for the pinewatch...
Pinephone is cool but it's so far behind. I can just use Xsdl to run a linux environment with desktop on my Android phone if needed.
That nuu phone is a carbon copy, specs, design, included case and all, of the Samsung galaxy a21s. I am not joking, they are identical, even the camera layout and bezels.
Isn't that good for... poor people?
@@steinkoloss7320 no, the price is the same, you just get a slower charger and that's it.
A21 cost a little more in some places though so its all relative to your Market.

Great stuff. o/
I don't think I've found a Xiaomi phone that I wasn't impressed by its build quality
Me: sees a livestrong bracelet

I don't think the POCO M3 actually has proper North American frequencies? At least NUU's G5 seems made for the US.
