    The M1909 Benét-Mercie is certainly one for me. That's one that also looks like something straight out of Fallout or Metro, with it being a machinegun that just feeds (or kind of chews through) a flat belt of bullets.

    • @Antimanele104
      @Antimanele104 4 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      Amazing enough... it was quite a common weapon for the French military during the war.

      I'd recommend watching the C&Rsenal video on the Benet-Mercie. Besides having an interesting history, the thing is an engineering marvel, and a production headache. It's like they started designing the gun and didn't stop.

  • @YouCaughtCzars

    Fun bit of trivia about the Hellreigel; the massive magazines and the water cooling sleeve were because the weapon was designed as a stationary defensive weapon in a similar vein to a light machine-gun. Keeping in mind that submachine-guns were used as effective trench-clearing weapons, the Hellreigel was designed to basically be a very handy way of defending trenches; it's not unimaginable to picture a small handful of these weapons killing entire infantry sections as they approached because it would have been lighter and more maneuverable than a machine-gun, despite its heavy weight, and because of its small cartridge it would have barely moved when firing.
    It's one of those really clever concepts that just didn't have a chance to get off of the ground because it came too late in the war, but I think the Hellreigel fits the sort of philosophy where sometimes you need a gun that doesn't excel at many applications, but you need one that can excel at one that nothing else can. It's why GIGN snipers have revolvers with bipods and high-powered optics for setting up in compact indoor areas where precision is essential, but a rifle would be too big and unwieldy.

      The Hellriegel didn’t come late in the war. The only photos of it are from 1915. It didn’t get off the ground likely because it didn’t work particularly well, which can be inferred by the lack of information about it besides a handful of pictures and one or two documents with only basic information about it confirming its existence.

    One of the reasons I enjoy Battlefield 1 so much is because of all the strange weapons it has that I had never heard of before playing it.
    Like I grew up playing shooters set in World War 2 and in modern times. So I was well familiar with M1 Garands, MP-40s, M-16s, and AKs.
    But until BF1 I had never heard of the Hellriegel, or the Lebel Rifle, or Mars Automatic Pistol (Victorian Deagle FTW), or the Hotchkiss M1909 Benét-Mercié light machine gun. It helped expand both my knowledge and love of firearms, and just for that I'm glad I played it.

  • @darthalvarez2046
    @darthalvarez2046 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    The reason BF1 has so many strange and interesting weapons is because WWI/ The Great War was the pinnacle of firearms technology development. There were needs for unique and niche weapons for specific situations and manufacturers were trying to meet those requirements, but also keep the production cheap and quality high.

  • @dillonc7955
    @dillonc7955 4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    I feel like either the Sjogren Interial or UTS-15 deserved the 1887's place on this list. The Sjorgren just looks like a prototype shotgun in general while the UTS has probably one of the weirdest reload animations in my opinion. The 1887 isn't really that unusual outside of the setting BFH was in.

      RSC SMG is a true skillcannon; practically a mini slr with quick close quarters ttk

    • @Antimanele104
      @Antimanele104 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@henrymartinvo I dunno, the RSC SMG is where I personally draw the line between "This weapon is hard to use, but the results are quite amazing" and "I am a masochist in every inch and way and need to show this to everyone".
      I like a challenging weapon, too, like the Selbstlader M1906 or the Trench Carbine 1917, but the RSC SMG has waaaay too many weaknesses to make it even remotely fun: brutal recoil, painfully slow reload, very small clip capacity and a snoozing RoF.
      Hell, even the freaking Kolibri I find it more useful than that thing. I mean, at least you know from the get-go what to expect from that tiny pistol.

    • @awrybowtie5591
      @awrybowtie5591 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@Antimanele104 definitely agree, no matter how skilled you were, the small mag size, long reload, poor accuracy beyond mid range really hampered how good you good get by recoil control and picking fights. Still a fun gun though: who doesn't like a Chauchat SMG?

    • @dillonc7955
      @dillonc7955 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Too bad faster reloading couldn't be one of your class perks. One of the main reasons I hated the RSC SMG was from the constant reloading. Definitely run a pistol you're good with if you use the RSC.

    • @TyOn2Wheels314
      @TyOn2Wheels314 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@awrybowtie5591 I went 66-1 on Amiens with the RSC SMG, it's actually my most used SMG in the game. It rewards a very specific hit and reposition type play style that only really works on maps with lots areas that have limited los in close quarters areas like Amiens, Argonne Forest. Basically just maps that allow you to kill and enemy then quickly make enemies lose line of sight of you and allow you to reposition to a different cqb area to attack again. It's a very high skill weapon, and the recoil really that bad especially if you're a seasoned PUBG player who knows what it's like to use 7.62 AR's with 6x scopes. The recoil on the RSC is a walk in the park compared to those guns.

    I think the Howell Rifle from Bf1 could also have made the list, just for the amount of stuff that had to be added to the gun in order to protect the users hands and face while firing that thing. (Also the idea to have a rail to lead the bold of a bolt action rifle in order to make it a SLR is pretty interesting) A truly unique and experimental weapon indeed.

    The "SMG 08/18" was created by (presumably) Andreas Wilhelm Schwarzlose. One of his family members, Wilhelm Schwarzlose, patented the use of an entrenchment tool connected to the gun's "pintle mount" as a fire stabilizer (monopod/bipod). The feed mechanism was actually invented back in 1904, originally intended for use with a "Pom-Pom" style autocannon, by Hermann Lehmann under Friedrich Krupp AG. So, the "SMG 08/18" is mostly a scaled-down version of that.

    So, fun note on water cooling...
    It's obsolete, sure, but it's also *insanely* efficient. If you can keep a steady stream of water to cool a machine gun barrel, you can fire the weapon indefinitely. John Browning tested this when he was designing the M1919 machine gun by firing 10,000 rounds *continuously* for the demonstration to the military. I can't find an exact source, but he basically sat there for several hours firing this heavy machine gun in full-auto, just to prove it's reliability.

    Fun fact, the Groza has a semi-relative made by some dude named Korobov, who had a history of making Groza-esque bullpup assault rifles sporting the typical TKB-*** naming scheme. He made one that was a triple barrel assault rifle, had a triple magazine, three barrels side by side. That Korobov dude was freaking crazy man. Made some ugly ass guns, but hey, he had imagination, so I can't fault him. I've drawn up some odd gun designs before, like a pistol that functioned almost identically to an SKS or a revolver with six detached barrels and a Webley style reloading mechanism, plus an 11mm handheld caseless rifle.

    Interesting that you picked the Schwarzlose SMG as number #1, I know of only 2 in the world One that is held in possession of the weapon design department at Tula State University in Russia And the other I’m unaware of it’s location , how do I know it’s name you ask? well it appears in a 1902 patent for its Spade attachment and the finished product in 1920.
    The guns first appearance in 1902 was by wilhelm schwarzlose son of Andreas S maker of the schwarzlose MG. Interestingly enough they are AustroHungarian

    The m3 infrared isnt a infrare sight it is actually a night vision scope. It was expensive so only the special forces were allowed to use it yet many decided not to as it was big and at night it would give off this really big green target that anyone can see at night giving you away.

      the howell automatic is weird as shit! it's a Lee Enfield bolt action rifle with a huge steampunk rig crappily rigged onto the rifle that attaches a goddamn piston on the outside of the gun that literally manually operates the bolt of the gun like a robot hand attachment with the help of an aftermarket gas tube drilled and fitted onto an otherwise perfectly fine rifle

    Actually, 1887 makes 100% total sense to be in BF:H. Illegal weapons are very often ancient, at least outside of US. Actually, even police in some South American countries use fricking Bren guns and alike.. Looks so ridiculous, a WW1 LMG shortened and used by a fully-equipped modern police man.. Must be a pretty good weapon if they trust it with their lives in CQC drug raids.

    Anyone who has the notion that the fedorov avtomat is an assault rifle should forget about it, its not an assault rifle. Its as much of an assault rifle as the BAR was.

    • @MarieAvora
      @MarieAvora 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      the BAR fires a full rifle cartridge whereas the Fedorov Avtomat fired the 6.5 Arisaka which was much closer to what we would consider an intermediate cartridge like those we see in Assault Rifles
      Assault Rifles are generally defined by their select fire capability i.e. repeating rifles capable of full auto, firing an intermediate cartridge i.e. something that is somewhere between a pistol cartridge like a 9x19mm and a rifle cartridge like the 7.92mm Mauser or the American 30-06 (7.62x63), and the 6.5x50 Arisaka is definitely closer to a modern intermediate cartridge in that respect, and their ability to be fired from the shoulder, which the Fedorov Avtomat would reasonably be much more capable of due to its weaker cartridge and significantly lower weight (under 5 kilograms whereas the BAR could be between 7 and 11 kilograms)
      it's not quite an assault rifle yet but it's definitely closer to the concept than the BAR or anything that came before. The one other gun from the era that comes close to the Assault Rifle concept is the Ribeyrolles 1918, by virtue of it's automatic capability and it's cartridge that is a very close fit to the intermediate cartridge definition, being an 8x33mm

    • @chikinkieven8817
      @chikinkieven8817 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MarieAvora while I do agree that it is closer to the assault rife concept I still say that is more of an automatic rifle, similar to the chauchat or the original pattern BAR from ww1. And yes I know that 6.5 arisaka is closer than 30-06 or 8mil label, but I wouldn't regard it as an intermediate cartridge by modern standards. Given the era it was designed and manufactured I would argue that it wasn't intended to be used with the same doctrine that assault rifles are used today. In the short time it was used in the field it was more than likely used like an automatic rifle like the bar or the chauchat or like a light machine gun similar to the madsen or the Lewis gun.
