Talk about the remoteness, beauty, moods and feeling of the Jonkershoek Mountains. What is the Jonkershoek Traverse?
Route: The Jonkershoek Traverse, also known as the Jonkershoek Marathon is a 33km traverse of the Jonkershoek skyline. The locals call it “die Hoefyster” due to the horseshoe shaped route. Along the way you summit 7 peaks** But don’t let the 33km fool you. It’s an incredibly challenging route, with about two-thirds of being off-trail and a total elevation gain of around 3300m. It’s “hands on rocks” terrain with a lot of climbing, scrambling, and even bumsliding. Because of the scrambling and exposed ledges, you also need a good head for heights.
    Peaks tagged
    1. Botmaskop (910m)
    2. Squaretower Peak (1126m)
    3. The North Twin of Pieke (1494m)
    4. Rifberg (Virgin 1460m & First Ridge Peak 1517m)
    5. Katedraal (Second 1515m & Third Ridge Peaks 1522m)
    6. Haelkop (1384m)
    7. Stellenboschberg (1175m)
Because the route starts and finishes on the first and last summits so you need an extra 2-3 hours extra to hike up to the start at Botmaskop and descend Stellenbosch berg.
History and FKT’s: The first recorded attempt was on 19 May 1962 by Rudolph Buhrman, Piet Hugo and Jan du Plessis in 19h30. Ernst Lotz shaved 5h30 off he record doing it in 14 hours in the same year and then in December of the same year Christopher Spottiswood smashed it, coming in at10h45. In 1991, Lydia Roos shaved another 32min off the 1962 record. She’s the first known woman to have completed the Hoefyster, and her record stood until 2000 Henco Jordaan came in under 10 hours at 9h40. The most recent FKT was set in 2020 when elite trail runners, Kyle Herring, Johardt van Heerden and Daniel Claasen dipped under 8hours, finishing in 7h56.
Tips for people wanting to do it.
Recce the route, especially Rifberg between Langrivierkloof and Bergriviernek.
Make sure you know where you can refill water and where the exit routes are.
Travel light. Go with a small daypack to make it easier to move over the technical terrain.
Pack layers, the weather can be unpredictable.
Take enough food to sustain you for a whole day. I finished 4 sandwiches, 4 bars, a packet of jelly babies and 2 bananas.
Make sure you’re comfortable with heights and scrambling. The route is extremely technical and physically demanding. You’re going to be using your whole body to climb, run, hike and scramble.
Wear long pants, the fynbos is brutal.
Move with purpose, it’s a long day. But be present and pause now and again to take it all in.
    To the mountains!!!!!!!

Thank you. It is a pretty big challenge to complete this route. But the views and mountains just push you on. Really appreciate the comments. We filmed our Helderberg Rim completion. Will start editing that soon.

@@mountaingoats9734 Ja, I completed the Jonkershoek Maraton in 2013 and 2020. In 2013 we did it in December in 30degree+ heat! In 2020 we had rain sleat and gale-force wind! Would love to do it in perfect conditions again. The perfect adventure!

A little bit of loose rocky bits. But luckily nothing crazy.
