I might be the only person to ever drive that beast besides mel when he owned it. One of the coolest things I ever did. Thanks again Mel for trusting me and teaching me a whole lot also. Mel is the master tuner also. The man.
I come back to this video from time to time. This is what every serious drag boat enthusiast should call the perfect boat. She's absolutely gorgeous. And wow is she a monstrous beast. I hope her new owner takes care of her...and has an excellent life insurance policy
Nice engine. You put it in your boat, nice! I grew up around the race tracks, & we also had boats! My Dad was a race car driver! We lived on the water in Long Island. I don’t live in the USA anymore.
and that paint job too....it looks like it could be candy and the stripes are buried under a lot of clear coat.... i am a body and paint guy so that stuff gets all my respect
Wonderful boat. The motor looks and sounds great. Would like to see more hull though. 24v system makes a world of difference. Whoever built this machine is an artist!
I've raced and broke a few of these, huge power, great reminders of the good old days, thanks for posting1111 My engine was in a drag hydro too back in 86
I owned the boat for 22 years. Driving a boat like this is not for someone who can receive senior discounts. I decided I had risked my life enough, driving it, & that's why I sold it. I still miss the thrill. There really is nothing else like it.
Robert Bidochon I don't understand how that could be joking? I also imagine your question relates to the possible octane rating of the fuel he's using? Alcohol engines run on methanol, it's a liquid made from the catalytization of carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, and hydrogen. It is chemically similar to ethanol which is why it is colloquially referred to as alcohol. Methanol does not combust in a similar way to gasoline and octane numbers do not apply nor would they be relatable to that of gasoline. But in short, it has a lower BTU output but can burn in lower stoichiometric ratios resulting in higher output from an otherwise similarly setup engine (compared to gasoline), allowing a proper setup to behave similar to high octane fuel. E85 is corn ethanol, and is not a performance fuel, rather it is a supplement to gasoline to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels. 85 is not a statement of its octane, but the percentage of ethanol (85) to gasoline (15). Typically the octane range for that fuel is 100-ish, which would indicate that it could be a possible substitute for a performance fuel, but real-world results indicate otherwise. Not that there aren't tuners out there with really powerful engines that use E85, but they're the exception and not the rule, and any tuner worth his salt would agree that the same engine on race gas or methanol would perform better. The reasons are the drastically different optimal stoich ratios for either fuel, it'll always be a compromise. This also explains the artificially high 100 octane rating, since alcohol can behave like a high octane fuel, it turns junky gas station 87 into a fuel that behaves like 100 when it's really not, yet still behaves like filthy 87. Your best bet for a performance engine is a high quality racing gasoline or methanol, and forget about anything sold at pumps. That stuff is made for mass-production, long storage, and low emissions, with no regards to performance or quality, and especially in the case of E85 which is only to get more fuel without using as much petroleum. So no, I'm not joking you. I'm trying to educate you.
Sorry, I only asked to be sure, not to offend you. I asked because some people on YT aren't as serious, connoisseurs as you. Thanks for the schooling, I'm happy to learn, always :D Ryan McIntyre
It starts rite up cuz it’s a KEITH BLACK motor! He IS STILL the KING of HP!!! In the 60’s & 70’s KEITH BLACK BLOWN HEMI’s were in PREATY much ALL top fuel dragsters👏👏☝️☝️☝️☝️☝️
My dad raced a taf when I was a kid back in the 80s... But I have to say this is one of the nicest boats I've ever seen. I'm curious as to what you got for it when you sold it or why you sold it. She's absolutely gorgeous
That was fantastic! Can you tell me more about the priming system? I am building a 461ci BBO with an 8-71 Hampton Super II blower and a Kinsler mechanical injector setup. It will have the same style Enderle hat yours does, but a Bugcatcher instead of the bigger Birdcatcher that yours appears to be. But your priming system is BOSS, how did you accomplish it?
Curtis Huntley Plumbing!? I'm a drag boat fan for sure and I live in Central Point. I realize this clip is two years old but if you still have the boat, I would sure love to go for a ride. I'll pay ya or trade you for an airplane ride!
Ive seen several engines like this on drag boats. Two questions - WHat does "Blown" mean? and also, why do they all idle like that? Up and down up and down...like someone is moving the throttle back and forth? Thanks!
Alan Rothfuss blower surge is caused by a lean/rich cycle at idle. when the engine is lean it'll raise the rpm, then the higher rpm adds fuel to the engine so the rpm comes back down, and it just keeps doing that over and over again. I think it's badass :) my chevelle will sound like that at idle because i love the sound
I don't know but I am very addicted to these engines and the sounds they make.
It's even more fun driving them. Thanks for the comment.
11 years and still the best sounding BBC on yourtube .
this is flat out the best sounding big block chevy on youtube.
Yes
I am still coming back for more. Holy cow this engine sounds good. Mmm..
I was having a bad day.
Thank you, that really cheered me up
I might be the only person to ever drive that beast besides mel when he owned it. One of the coolest things I ever did. Thanks again Mel for trusting me and teaching me a whole lot also. Mel is the master tuner also. The man.
i can listen to that big 14-71 blower cycle all night long !!!!!!! .............love it .......:)

+Scientologysecuritiesfraud dotcom This beauty is amazing! Which fuel you used to run this with? E85 or higher? Thanks!
Methanol

Really or is it a joke to test me?

is this still for sale ? would love to bring this to australia and show it off
I have to know, do boat engines come with a camshaft? What kind of lope does it have.

Aluminum rods in this puppy?
Love the video trying to build me a motor this summer
engine mounted pole holders?
where is the listing for the sale
Ive seen several engines like this on drag boats. Two questions - WHat does "Blown" mean? and also, why do they all idle like that? Up and down up and down...like someone is moving the throttle back and forth? Thanks!
Blown me supercharged. If he didn't rev the engine it would stall becuse he probably has a high lift cam in it.
Big cam for a big motor

+chevelle19721 everyones gotta love a cammed chevelle :)
chevelle19721 best layman explanation lol.
