Watch on the main PBS TH-cam channel: • The Psychology of Spac...
In 1897, the Belgica set sail for Antarctica on the first true science mission to the end of the world,. But within 200 days, the crew found themselves trapped in sea ice, battling disease and insanity during the unending polar night. How did the extreme Antarctic winter affected the Belgica's crew? And what can their trials teach us about maintaining sanity in the harsh environments of space as humanity plans for it’s first crewed mission to Mars?

The winter was especially hard as they could not hold the traditional Antarctic screening of “The Thing”, as that film hadn’t been made yet
I love how that scientist took the opportunity to shoot some fire at the airline industry 😂
I always find Stories like this.Absolutely wonderfully interesting. However I always find them crazy sad as well
So awesome to see Joe on PBS
no matter where we go in the universe we have to take part of the Earth with us. Light, air, water, food, gravity, society, etc.
Didn't know any of this. Well done, Tanya on the writing.
You're my favorite Dr. Joe! So glad to see u have more vids outside of ur channel. Thanks PBS!
Hope to see a real Mars station by 2100
Damn what a project that will be.
Elon said he’d be on Mars by now 🤣
I'm leaning towards us humans spending time on space stations.
Short of a mining Colony I'm not really sure what benefits Mars would have. It's very hostile to us humans.
Once we get past the hurdle of gravity. We can do whatever we want out in space. Build as big and crates as many environment as we want.
Thank you.
A long Mars mission would make for some epic Dungeons and Dragons campaigns....D20s in freefall would be a challenge....
Why not just go to Venus and be content with colonozing its upper atmosphere with cities like Lando Carlisiaan's Bespin?
G'head
Thanks a lot ❤❤❤❤❤
Humans are not going to Mars. Nor should they. It's a pipe dream.
Right on !!! Onward to Mars!!!💪💪💪
Silly boy. Star Trek is TV show.
@@tonytaskforce3465what are you even talking about you silly 🤡. That has nothing to do with what I said.
Love you pbs
Cool
Hello Joe!
Looking good 😎🤓
Surprised that Shackletons expedition to Antarctica is not mentioned here! It should be :-)
Watch the previous video on the serie.
Will do, thanks
So what, are astronauts zooming above us taking Ambien every 24hrs to sleep and modafinil to stay awake every day?
Can't astronauts take light boxes with them?
@10:31 whaaaat??? since when borsch is a russian soup???? lmao
"on to Australia" not "back to Australia."
*Borscht is a Ukrainian meal.* Calling it soup is demonstrated illiteracy.
❤
Point to note: Mars has no air (!) or magnetosphere; you know the global magnetic field that protects from the invisible sunlight that kills in a few hours. Antarctica is doddle by comparison.
Nutrient deficiencies can mess with your head and your body.
If a group of astronauts go to Mars,
Would they Really be "alone"???
They'd probably go mad and murder each other in a few months.
Very insightful.
But Borsh is not russian, lady! 😂
how far are we from sending people to mars?
In my opinion very far. There just isn't enough gravity; how are you going to fix that?
@@katherineg9396What is meant by “isn’t enough gravity”? You’re not one of those fools who assumes that microgravity and Martian gravity will have the same health effects are you?
Gamers and basement dwellers would thrive.
I believe a Mars expedition will end badly no matter how much preparation they take.
I think we'll figure it out
I want video about australia please ❤❤❤❤❤❤
Whatever... American prisoners be like, "solitary confinement? pfff... hold my beer".
American prisoners are spoiled.
Space exploration should be done by machines. We are advancing in tech to do so. Humans haven't adapted to leave Earth and survive. The radiation will be deadly.
I think robots will be helpful for us to develop technology to overcome our biological weaknesses and allow us to explore and travel space eventually. But right now, we still have a lot of work to do. Just my thoughts.
In order for us to be a multi-planetary species, we humans must learn to grow our food. Be a vegetarian, so we can be multi-planetary.
Technically the best diet would be insects, their are easy to grow in small space and full of protein.
Now try to grow grain in a greenhouse good luck with that.
So please stop all of this vegan propaganda.
Uhhhhh, no.
Why not have us learn to photosynthesize? Chloroplasts in our skin to give us a bsse-level metabolism, and a digestive system for when we need more energy?
(Dream big!)
Raising animals to eat is growing food. Not everyone can be a vegetarian.
Meal worms are the leading candidate for our protection source
I cant watch. Don't want to see a cat get hurt
This whole losing your sanity thing with a few days away from a couple of people is complete asinine idiocy
How long till we can resort to cannabilism? I haven't eaten in hours!
Right on !!! Onward to Mars!!!💪💪💪
