Hindu scriptures have given great emphasis on the singing of kirtans in Kali-Yug. Singing kirtans is one of the 9 forms of bhakti (navadhā bhakti). Shriji Maharaj promoted singing kirtans by encouraging his poet sadhus to compose kirtans in various categories; such as, describing God’s murti, updesh, prāpti, sant-mahimā, utsavs, etc. Their kirtans have greatly added to the treasure trove of Gujarati literature.
Both young and old revel in singing kirtans that are filled with devotion, as everyone endeavors to engage their mind on Shriji Maharaj. Therefore, Kirtan Muktavali was published to include hundreds of kirtans useful in daily life. Moreover, during Bhagwan Swaminarayan’s bicentennial celebration, kirtan āradhanā programs increased the enthusiastic momemtum of singing in youths. After more kirtan additions and categorization by topics, the eighth edition of the Kirtan Muktavali was published, with the help of Pujya Yogicharan Swami, Pujya Shwetvaikunth Swami, and others.
