    My hive has started placing brood in the better comb too. They stored honey first, used or moved the honey and then started laying brood in the BC frames.

    • @FrederickDunn
      @FrederickDunn  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That's pretty standard I think, clean and work it a bit, then put eggs in. I'm happy with it and I think it saves them some time and resources particularly this time of year. :)

      @@FrederickDunn I will have to make 2 splits next spring and I plan on using BC to help. I’m going to try the 5 frame stack for one of the splits. I will build the stack over winter.

      @@FrederickDunnNice video! Fred do you know if ticks are attracted to the CO2 from hives? I sometimes find a tick or two on the side of a hive even though there is 10 ft clearance from brush. What are some things you do to mitigate ticks in an apiary without harming bees?

    Sure are bringing in the pollen. Nice. Robbing is an issue right now in Western North Carolina. Not much pollen here now.

    The reduced entrance definitely to 3/8 definately keep mice out however i saw one squeeze in while i was trying to stomp on it ..
    Its a handfull keeping all those different hives sorted .
    Mine are all 10 frame double deeps i try to keep it all interchangeable .
    New boxes for brood chambers moved up for honey once they get bit tattered and need repairs and 🎨

    I only saw one hive with the Hive Gate entrance on it. Have you stopped using them?

    • @FrederickDunn
      @FrederickDunn  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I have shelved them for now in my apiary. My colonies did well with or without them, if I had more pressure from wasps or serious robbing I'd keep them in. I do recommend them still.

    On hives 7,6,4,17. (Could have missed some or gotten the numbers wrong) have what appears to be a 2” shim or is that a slat rack?

    Hi Frederick. I have robber screens on as there seems to be a lot of bees trying to rob. Is 3 x 3/8 enough to protect from robbing? My bees are having a hard time removing dead drones because they have to lift them up to get them past the robbing screen. The bees are strong in numbers. it's hard to find info on when to remove robbing screens, or how long to have them on.
    I live in South east Canada 40 klm from USA border near Ogdensburg. Thanks in advance for any suggestions. I even had to gently hose the bees down because of so much activity.

    Thanks again Fred. Hive number 16 has a lot of speckles on the front face and landing board. Is that an indication of anything? Just curious.

    • @FrederickDunn
      @FrederickDunn  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That has been there since winter! I meant to come up with a way of scrubbing that off but never got around to it. It's spring dysentery and the colony did well inspite of that early issue. :)

    Ha Fred, I enjoyed the video where did u get the numbers from for your hives. Glad your bees are doing well,
    My bees are doing good as well, they just started bringing in pollen after a very long dry spell. Where I live, we have nothing when I pull the suppers in June I have to start feeding. Well again the video was great really enjoyed it have a Blessed week.

    I live in middle TN. Came out this afternoon to spy a swarm, about the size of a volleyball, hanging about 60 ft. up in a tree beside my bee yard. No way am I getting up there. Very disappointed. Unless anyone has another suggestion, I will now need to determine which hive decided to split this late in the year and then buy a replacement mated queen.

    Thanks for the overview. Wasn’t it a while ago that your goal was only 20 hives? Lol 😂 I’m soooo glad the city limits us to 4 because I would be right up there with you! 😀

    • @FrederickDunn
      @FrederickDunn  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My target zone would be 10-15 good hives. Things just seem to get out of hand. I've even given away several hives with their resident bees. We'll see how winter goes.

    Great quick tour. Fred, what are your average first killing and last frost dates? What are winters like where you are?

    • @FrederickDunn
      @FrederickDunn  ปีที่แล้ว

      We'll likely get a hard frost during October, and the spring risk continues into April. I'm in the snowbelt, winters are long and the snow gets deep. Two years ago we received over 100" of snow. Great testing ground for hive configurations.

    What’s the best way to harvest honey without damaging the comb?

    • @FrederickDunn
      @FrederickDunn  ปีที่แล้ว

      The least removal of comb wax would be slicing through the caps and using a tangential extractor. By "slicing" I mean tools that pierce cappings rather than removing them. There are rollers, and the BeeSmart Ultimate uncapper. They leave all of the wax on the comb.

    Seems at a few hives bees are fanning to cool the hive. Need to take off entrance reducers?

    • @FrederickDunn

    Hello Frederick. Speaking of entrances, a thought/question came to me today and I knew you were the guy to answer it.
    I’ve noticed that whatever direction your hive is facing, the bees as far as I can tell, fly up and out and in one direction.
    Does the direction of an entrance have a factor on which direction and area foraging is covered? If an entrance is facing south, will the bees ever forage north of the hive? I’m very interested to know your answer. Grateful.

    • @FrederickDunn
      @FrederickDunn  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Brad, that's a great question, and the answer is no... whatever the entrance direction, they still do that corkscrew flight up and away in the direction of the forage source. But it's a great thought :)

    • @bradgoliphant
      @bradgoliphant 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Confused on your answer-so they do fly in all directions or don’t?
      Grateful.

  • @woodlandharvesthoneycompanyllc
    @woodlandharvesthoneycompanyllc ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Fred you are so right about the 5 over 5 hives building up faster than 10 frame deeps. I like starting splits in them then making split off the splits in summer. Also I have found that the colonies seem to overwinter much better in the 5 over 5 nucs and build up faster in the spring when you want to split them or transfer them to 10 frame deeps for honey production.

    • @FrederickDunn
      @FrederickDunn  ปีที่แล้ว

      All so true... they winter extremely well.

    • @woodlandharvesthoneycompanyllc
      @woodlandharvesthoneycompanyllc ปีที่แล้ว

      @@FrederickDunn I think the faster build up and better wintering is do to the the fact that the bees are able to move up as opposed to laterally much like a hollow tree. Humans put them in rectangular boxes but bees are naturally forest creatures. Really like your videos.

      Each design has its appeal, but I'd have to say that horizontal hives may be my choice in another 15 years simply due to the ease of maintenance and management. I need more storage space.
