Thanks from a seasoned DxO Photolab user (for more than 10 years, back from the time when its name was still DxO Optics Pro ...). However, there's a lot of user error in this video, which should give DxO's developers clues for making the interface friendlier for people who are unfamiliar with the program.
What you thought is an overall "intensity"/exposure slider is actually the strength setting for DxO Photolab's "Smart Lighting" feature, which is the program's HDR tone mapping function (i.e. a function that compresses dynamic range by lifting shadows and lowering highlights to avoid clipping).
This tone mapping function can also work with face recognition ("Spotlight" instead of "Uniform") so that faces will always be optimally exposed. This is a very powerful feature that makes good portrait pictures really easy. The only problem is that the program's face recognition is rather bad, and very often you need to manually mark people's faces to make the function work. [Another problem is that the positions of these manual marks also get copied when you apply the correction settings of one image to another image so that they end up marking non-existing faces...]
"Smart Lighting" - normally set to "medium" - is particularly powerful in combination with automatic exposure correction, which can be set to protect highlights from clipping. The idea is that the combination of these tools obsoletes white point adjustment (unless you want to purposefully clip the image...).
There's also some user error in your use of DeepPrime denoising (as I pointed out in a commentary further down below). While the full screen preview of the image is actually denoised, it doesn't use DeepPrime or DeepPrime XD even when they have been selected, because they are too computing-intensive for real-time full screen preview. Instead, you see the results of the simpler, older, non-Deep Prime denoising algorithm in the full screen preview, and the actual (much smoother) Deep Prime/Deep Prime XD denoised preview in the 1:1 pixel preview thumbnail of the denoising settings menu. You can use a loupe symbol to change the part of the image that gets previewed this way. You will see that the actual Deep Prime/XD denoising is much more aggressive and smoothes out surfaces and often needs to be dialed back. (You probably noticed that, too, after you exported your images and saw that they had much less noise texture than in the full screen preview.)
Another thing to look into are DxO's color profiles. A very powerful function is that it can emulate the color science of other digital cameras (including Leica M9, M10, Canon 1D, 5D, Fujifilm X-Trans and GXR) based on DxO Lab's very accurate camera calibration measurements - which means that you can make basically any camera supported by the program look like, for example, a Leica M10.
But this is also the program's major downside: It only works with and for cameras for which it has its own calibrations. It doesn't even do generic raw processing of, for example, DNG raw files, but refuses to work if a camera is not explicitly supported. On top of that, DxO has dropped support for a number of older cameras (such as the Fuji S5 Pro) in the course of the history of the program, and some features do not work with all cameras. For example, Deep Prime XD and automatic exposure correction do currently not work with raw files from Fuji X-Trans cameras.
For Deep Prime and Deep Prime XD denoising, you need a computer with a powerful GPU/graphics card. For M1/M2 Mac users, this should be a non-issue, but most non-gaming Windows laptops might not be powerful enough to use this feature.

      Many thanks for your insights.
I found the exposure slider after I had published the video. It's curious how some basic slider are grayed out by default.
I also realized that some cameras are not supported and that was a small surprise.
Anyway, thanks for the info. It helps me to understand Photolab better.

Thanks, I know this is old but the features explained In this comment and the video as well were helpful. I just got DxO Photolab a few weeks ago and I have to say that it has totally changed my perspective on camera gear. I can now choose an old cheap camera solely based on the ergonomics and it doesn’t matter if I don’t like the camera’s colors or noise at high ISO, a single click of a preset in Photolab fixes all of that. Setting up a preset with my favorite color profile, denoising, and smart lighting gets me the look and the low light performance I’ve always wanted, still using my 12 year old camera. I think the most important part is how easy and automatic it is compared to Lightroom which I always has to make lots of different changes to different photos in order to get to the starting point that i wanted.

About the greyed out sliders, everything is greyed out by default until you change it. Greyed out in Photolab means that you haven’t made any changes to that setting.

As others have pointed out you can only see the effect of DeepPrime in the small viewer window and not on the full screen view. What you see on the full screen is the HQ noise reduction version. This is because DeepPrime, unlike LR etc, works on the raw data BEFORE demosaicing and this is also why it obviously can't be used on RGB (Tif,jpg etc) images. The processing power required to work on the raw data before demosaicing makes a full screen preview impractical. Once you are used to DeepPrime you know what level of DeepPrime to apply based on the ISO, so it's not in practice such a big deal.
Once you have decided which tools you want to apply to most images you can create a preset and in preferences , tell DXO to apply it to all images when they are first opened.
As you explore DXO be sure to look at the optical corrections. Unlike LR DXO profile the lens/camera in their optical labs to produce their own optical modules which you download. This is very relevant for MFT as these lenses are designed for computer correction and therefore benefit from DXO. LR uses the jpg lens correction embedded in the raw file. This jpg correction is limited by camera computer power and process time (up to 20 fps :-)) The jpg correction therefore often uses a crop to remove barrel distortion left by the lens designers. Often, with wide angle zooms the lens designers actually use a lens with a shorter focal length than is written on the lens barrel so that the crop produces the quoted focal length. An example of such a lens is the 12-100mm Pro F4. If you set the lens correction to 85% and untick maintain aspect ratio you can obtain an image with a greater fov compared to the jpg. A welcome "free extra" from using DXO. 🙂
The lens module is also used to provide the Lens Sharpness tool, that provides capture sharpening. The lens sharpness pallet provides sharpening customised to the lenses characteristics, typically lenses are less sharp towards the edges of the frame and therefore DXO applies more sharpness to match. You should not use USM sharpening, which DXO also supplies, as that is for sharpening RGB images. The lens sharpness palette also contains a rather strangely names "Bokeh" slider which is used to restrict sharpening of out of focus areas.
The Smart Lighting slider is an unusual tool as it alters both shadows (fill Light) and can recover highlights but its behaviour is difficult to predict. It attempts to provide a 1 slider tool for balancing the overall exposure and was very useful before the introduction of local edits. The Exposure compensation slider ia a straightforward exposure slider but there are drop down choices for pulling back on highlights.
Photolab greatly benefits from the addition of FilmPack Elite as this adds a fine contrast slider and tonal contrast sliders to the DXO interface for highlights, mid-tones and shadows.
Under the Colour Rendering palette you get the choice of using different colour profiles (with a slider to control intensity) and your own, or third party dcp profiles.
Finally, and this is important for a LR user, the UI is virtually completely customisable, something a LR user never looks for because LR customisation is minimal. Thus you can get the UI to look how you like and also display which tools and in whatever order you like. You can save workspaces and switch between them with a couple of mouse clicks.
There is a bug currently with a particular Mac OS version that gives a colour cast with DeepPrime. I can't remember which Mac OS as I'm on Windows but the fix is scheduled for December release version 6.1, I believe.
    I hope this helps :-)

@@mattisulanto I used LR from V1-6 before switching to C1 as my main raw processor, but DXO Photolab has superior lens corrections and noise control.
Just relaying what I have learnt from others. From personal experience learning new software is difficult :-) Sliders, even with the same name, don't necessarily do the same thing eg DXO highlight, shadows etc sliders cover a much broader range than in LR and are not really comparable. DXO works in its own way probably reflecting its gallic origins :-)
These differences often mean people give up on Photolab as they are tripped up by, for example, the DeepPrime viewer window, they use USM sharpening because that's what they are used to, they don't like the UI but don't realise it's customisable etc.
I will be interested to see how you get on :-)

I've used DxOPhotolab4 and 5 for several years. DxO has been great providing free updates to add features and correct bugs. DxOPhotolab5 has been my first stop in photo processing. The standard/default adjustments are applied automatically (this can be shut off if preferred). You can "go crazy" with adjustments, but I prefer keeping it simple: apply denoise; set Clearview to 25; set microcontrast to to auto; set color to use the camera's color format. This does 90-95% of the work. Further tweaks can be done in Photolab or in another program by file export.
DxOPhotolab5 and 6 does an outstanding job with batch processing. From DxO library, select all the raw files to be edited. Then I do my basic edits described above. Then export to tiff. Each image looks strikingly improved compared to the original. The results are "good enough" for most people and for social media. Perfectionists can use their favorite tools to put the final polish for printing. Batch processing with DxOPhotolab6 (I upgraded) let my computer do the work for me processing the 4000+ photos from an extended tour in South America!
Looking forward to seeing your future videos on DxOPhotolab6. As usual, your work shines!

You see the results for the noise reduction only on the small window on the right. Only when you develop the raws files into jpgs or tiffs. In the big window in the middle you see only the high quality noise reduction and not the prime, deep prime ore deep prime xd noise reduction. When you use it it takes some time, but the results are really breathtaking. Prime XD takes probably some minutes depending on your processor.

@@mattisulanto What you see in the main windows is actually not the Deep Prime denoising result, but the result of the simpler (non-AI) denoising algorithm. Deep Prime and Deep Prime XD are too computation-intensive to allow full screen preview. You only see the actual Deep Prime/Deep Prime XD denoising result in the thumbnail view that is part of the Deep Prime settings menu.

PL is my main processor since a couple of years ago I wanted to upgrade from SilkyPix (which isn't as bad as it's reputation, but not the best either). I tested all the main app and PL immediately popped out by the quality that I got with the default settings. Most important for this is the "SmartLighting" feature that really does a very good job for most pictures with it's 25% default setting.
Some remarks for beginners: There is in fact no white point for exposure, only for white balance. I too use the curve for that, but with clipping indicators (on the upper left below the histogram). On really difficult lighting situations it can help to play with the "microcontrast" (which is a local contrast filter, not really "micro"), or with "ClearView", which I seldom set to more than 10%. Preview for denoise and sharpening is only in the smal view on the right, the image preview just comes near, but isn't the actual outcome of the denoise engine. DeepPrime has become very fast with a recent PL 5 version on Apple M1 processors. The widely praised camera/lens modules are really an asset of this software, but they are not flawless. For some lenses I need to correct the distortion setting when my subject is very rectilinear.
For anyone considering to buy PhotoLab: you need to purchase the "elite" version and you'll need the ViewPoint extension. Purchasing all updates, PL isn't much cheaper than Lightroom, but for me, it is better.

@@mattisulanto Yes and no... The main preview does reflect your settings, but it is always rendered with standard denoise, not *PRIME. So you don't see the actual result here. If you preview a really noisy image and compare the main window to the small preview below the denoise settings, you'll see what I mean. For noisy images, the denoising also affects the sharpening, of course. I sometimes reduce denoising to 33 to retain better sharpness with still very good denoising.

I've only been using PhotoLab since PL4, choosing DxO over LR/PS based on reviews and the lack of Adobe's subscription-based model (although the updates can add up). I also got FilmPack and the Nik Collection and now have the latest iterations of all of these plus ViewPoint 4 and Topaz Photo AI, so there's very little I can't do with great precision (other than PS-related things like pano stitching, which I rarely do--for that I got PSP 2022 Ultimate for the price of several months of an Adobe subscription). I find the DxO workspace/workflow reasonably intuitive and very powerful, enabling me to achieve great results (although I'm still working my way up the learning curve). The possibilities can be overwhelming, especially when you add the Nik plug-ins. Fortunately, there are a lot of tutorials. It's just amazing what you can do compared with film (sans noxious chemicals or the need to work with a safelight), yet replicate a similar look when desired. It'll be interesting to see what you think after spending more time with DxO...

With finite and limited spending, I bought into Pure Raw (Mark 1), have a continuing Adobe LR/PS subs and had old Topaz product that I just last week updated for 1 year.
Pure Raw is really, really good for raw, I think it does a camera body + lens combo profile - not just the lens by itself. Meaning if you use the same lens on two different bodies, it asks to download two different optical profiles. Although Pure Raw 2 has an enhanced NR (called XD), I could not distinguish enough difference, so remain with Pure Raw. If I didn't have Pure Raw, I would buy Pure Raw 2. This is my automatic pre-processing before hitting ACR / LR.
PhotoLab will have the NR plus the famous Dxo perspective controls and connect to the famous film sims (not sure if they are included or you need to buy separately). However, with LR / ACR, I have become very comfortable with the results from tonal & colour adjustments. For me, I am reluctant to abandon that comfort to re-learn a new system of sliders.
The Topaz NR works with non raw files (TIFF and JPEG). has one click NR, sharpening, enlargement - that's why I updated.

Unfortunately, almost all photography TH-camrs feel compelled to comment on DxO PhotoLab without a full understanding of how its unique features work. Sure, it has most of the usual raw adjustments, which seems to be the point of comparison, but reviewers miss the subtleties of their Smart Lighting, ClearView Plus, and especially Control Points. PhotoLab's Smart Lighting is not the same as their Exposure Compensation, which works the same as the more traditional Exposure slider in LR. ClearView Plus may seem similar to LR's Dehaze in some ways, but I find it much more subtle, and overall more useful. White Point can be adjusted using their Tone Curve (just like with LR, but DxO's implementation is not as powerful), but I rarely find the need, given the other adjustments. Fortunately, most reviewers recognize DxO's superior raw conversion and noise reduction. Fortunately, it doesn't have to be either/or: DxO's plug-in extra makes it possible to pass the raw file to PhotoLab, then back (similar to PureRaw). PhotoLab is not as complete an environment as LR, but the two are complementary. If all you want are the optical corrections and noise reduction, get PureRaw. If I could have only one, I would stick with LR, but add PureRaw, but I often do all of my edits in PhotoLab and pass it back to LR as a TIFF. I could make PhotoLab do the job by itself, but I would have to give up LR's mature catalog, its new masking enhancements, and (of course) access to Photoshop for advanced processing.

Shame they charging so much for something as basic as perspective correction(looking at you Viewpoint). Overall I'm happy enough with their software but I agree it isn't complete environment. The other addition piece of software I don't regret spending money on is their Filmpack6. gives great results combined with Photolab and Fuji files.

I am a very long-time user of NIK filters and, understandably, enjoy control points. I think we have a similar background in that I remember when Lightroom and Apple's Aperture first came out. I tested both, liked both, as each had advantages. In the end, I liked Aperture a bit better, and being a Mac user I went with Aperture. I loved Aperture right up to the point that Apple abandoned it. I considered going to LR when Apple killed off Aperture, but I went to Capture One for awhile and then I discovered DXO - back then it was DXO Optics Pro. DXO does things VERY differently than LR. Certainly there will be a learning curve, but I think you will find it worthwhile. Oh, and as others have mentioned - you cannot see the effects of Deep Prime or Deep Prime XD in the main window. Even the preview window does not do it justice. To see what that noise reduction can do you have to export the file with the reduction on.

I also, have On-One Photo Raw and it's great, too with everything under one roof and really excellent de noising, layers and really everything you could want. Recently, Capture One sent out an update and even with Black Friday and an upgrade "deal" it was close to $200 just for an upgrade from 2022 to 2023. I didn't find anything in the upgrade worth that price. So, already owning DXO 4, I upgraded to DXO 6 primarily because they now support the Leica SL2 where they hadn't before so my version of DXO was unusable on my SL2. DXO 6 upgrade was a good price on BF. I think it will do everything I need and I can still use Capture One 2022 if needed but I just may gravitate away from Capture One in the long run.

I purchased DxO last week but have not tried it yet. Of course, you can mitigate noise in Lightroom too, usually it's a question of finding the right balance between noise reduction and sharpening, what you gain on one end you lose on the other. I guess the only way to further improve noise in PP is to have algorithms that guess what information was lost when taking the picture and substitute it with new, made-up information. Up to a point this is acceptable, and in fact this is how all digital imaging (or sound reproduction) works, but if one goes too far it's not "photography" anymore, but something else. It is also true that our visual perception works in a similar way, the eyes provide some data but the brain fills-in a lot of gaps, only a tiny proportion of our visual field is actually in focus at any given point in time, the DxO in our brain compensate for it

I have been struggling since Lightroom exists on how Lightroom re-interprets the colors. LR's colors looks like artificial, as well, the density of the image (not so noticeable), specially when the picture is slightly modified this gets more visible. Long time ago, a very simple free RAW Editor made by an small group of photographers that came to existence, gave much better results regarding color interpretation, but it also didn't looked 100% realistic and it lacked of certain features. Then I saw how Capture One interprets colors and man... I think that one is unbeteable. Yet I have not made any comparisson between DXO PhotoLab and Capture One, and the one from DXO is doing a superb job, specially with that "potect saturated colors" slider plus vibrance and saturation modifications. Even if the saturation slider is crancked, colors rermain stable with a good gamut. The downside is the DeepPrime XD Noise Reduction produce ugly results against DeNoise from LR, which is incredible. EDIT: the DeepPrime XD needs to be rasterized in order to be visible. It does a similar or greater result than the DeNoise from LR.

The problem seems to be the neural engine. By default, photolab uses the neural engine of the M1 processor. You can change that in the advanced settings of Photolab. (Neural engine -> GPU). It will take longer to export the image with the GPU but DeepPRIME XD won't turn your image purple

The last word from DxO support is that they are "in contact" with Apple to see if Apple will fix their neural engine or if DxO will have to fix the issue in their software -- most likely to mean that other than to acknowledge that the problem exists, no work or little work has been done to address this. Other photo editing software uses Apple's neural engine on Ventura and no problems.

I tested PhotoLab 6 on and off within the trial period. The most impressive is the noise reduction feature DeepPRIME XD and the lens sharpening. The result is really smooth and without the artifacts from Topaz Photo AI (still haunted per Dec 2022). Those two tools isolated are worth the money for the PhotoLab 6. But of course there are a number of other very good tools in the lab. What bothers me is the following: The sharpening is not relayed to the screen, the small loupe sucks. Next, why present us to a masking brush with one forced color - blue, it has to be changeable for differently colored backgrounds. Further the Edge brush doesn't show its edges which is awful considering the general technical level of the lab. Finally about the masking brush - apparently? - it can't draw a straight line, at least not with the usual combination left-click + shift - move to a new position and left-click again. I would also prefer that the local adjustment panels didn't show up in the area I am about to edit - preferably outside the image. This is a special problem I brought upon myself with an ARW file in ACR: If you for some reason have produced an Enhanced DNG in Lightroom/ACR, i.e. have upscaled 2 times, and you want to process this larger DNG in the lab, e.g. to deal with the noise up front, the lab strips the file from its enlarged attributes and the original size of the raw file is output as a DNG - useless in such cases for obvious reasons.

Problems, though. Photolab 6 creates SIGNIFICANT color shifts on export as you move up the Deep Prime noise removal levels. HQ does ok, but compare it to Deep Prime XD. Looks fine in the viewer, but export it to DNG, TIFF, or JPEG, etc., and the colors shift significantly toward the blue end. Take a screen shot of the preview and compare it to the export. Not even close. Also, PureRaw works better at removing noise as a standalone, but ONLY if it's out of LightRoom as a plugin, for some reason. Run an image with the standalone software and it blows the highlights!
When it works, it's better than Topaz DeNoise IMO, but you have to jump through a LOT of hoops to get it to work properly. At least on my M1 mac.
