One of the best musical scenes in anything ever. The conversational nature of music, and somehow the AI doesn't muck it up! A miracle.

It is actually mathematics that they are communicating with - only in musical tones. Math and music correspond

The composition is, in fact, called "The Conversation" on the soundtrack. John Williams is an extraordinary genius.

The sound of mathematics. The science of music. It's all just ripples in a pond, strings on a quantum guitar.

Fun fact. The younger guy who was playing the keyboard (Phil Dodds) was actually the audio engineer technician who was installing the keyboard on the set and Steven Spielberg put him in as the operator. He has two screen credits because his character took over two characters in the script that were combined.

It's very considerate of the Alien to communicate with us in 12 tone equal temperament, I would interpret from that good intentions.

Does anyone else remember this scene but with subtitles of what they are saying/playing and the aliens were trying to speak with us humans but all we played/said was “hello, how are you?” to the point where the aliens just lost their mind and started to insult us?
It was hilarious and I know I’ve seen it somewhere but can’t find it anywhere.

I remember an episode of Are You Afraid Of The Dark with extraterrestrials coming down after a musician played a part of their song to another planet, and they responded. They spoke in melodic tones, just like these ones do!

The truth can be established using special open source exploration methods (TEXT MINING). Popular presenter Tucker Carson talked about UFOs, he referred to the publication of the American newspaper The Wall Street Journal (12.07.22), where the article Putin and UFO sightings was published (authors Holman W., Jenkins Jr.) - there was a topic discussed: if this is a secret military equipment, then who produces "flying saucers" - the United States or Russia? This is not surprising, because modern electrokinetic "flying saucers" are a clever secret technology, but all within the framework of ordinary physics! I will also clarify one important point. "Flying saucers" and devices known as "dark triangles" are a technique invented on Earth. There, the railguns are reduced to the size of a ballpoint pen rod - they are quite miniature. They are assembled into flat panels that resemble plasma panels of conventional televisions with a cellular structure, and the current supply scheme to the arresters is similar. The distance between the contacts is negligible - an ordinary spark of an electric discharge becomes a bridge between them (sometimes rail sensors are made coaxial - similar to direct-flow reactive ones). All cells work synchronously: they emit plasma streams - sparks of electrical discharges accelerated by induction force. The speed of the outgoing plasma is enormous, and the number of railguns assembled on the panel reaches hundreds of thousands. The total motor impulse in the end turns out to be impressive. The discharges follow with a frequency of megahertz, each pulse enters the air, which, in turn, twists into toroidal rings. That's how this secret technique flies. They are made in the USA, Russia, and China. It's time to declassify!

I think _Close Encounters: The Director's Cut_ was the last VHS I ever bought, before DVDs. I was upset with it because it didn't have the ending inside the mothership. I learned much later that Spielberg was forced to put that in, if he wanted to film extra scenes (like the ship in the desert) for the TV presentation, so it wouldn't be in his cut. I guess it is better to leave it to your imagination, since nothing much happens other than lots of aliens look out their windows at him.
