  • Desperate times leave me with no other option then to wild camp in an abandoned village. Although the real challenge begins when I wake the next morning to a frozen tuk tuk that won't start. Nothing's easy on three wheels but we like it that way!

    I live in Alaska so this might help, depending on if you’re here in winter and temps, you may need a battery heater, oil pan heater, and engine block heater. In milder areas of the state you can get away with just plugging in the engine block heater overnight (if it’s going to be 0F or colder), in some areas you definitely need all three if it’s going to be -25F or colder. I don’t know how much of that applies to a Tuk Tuk, but you may want to look into “winterizing” it.

    • @aussieespanol
      @aussieespanol  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That’ll definitely be necessary for sure. Cheers legend 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼

    It sounds like Tori is not getting enough air trough these high altitudes. There are some modification possibilities to compensate for this, some more difucult than others. The easiest would be to modify the airfilter or take it off completly (maybe not the most healthiest) to allow more air to the motor.

    Hello mate! For future reference, if you ever want to roll start your tuk tuk in case it's out of battery or something, you're gonna want to do some things differently. From your video, it seemed to me all you did was to get it moving and then just normally trying to start it up, that has no effect! To roll start a manual transmission vehicle, you'll have to get it moving, then press the clutch and engage 1st or 2nd gear (2nd is preferable). After that, when the vehicle has gained enough speed, you'll slowly release the clutch while the ignition is on (you don't have to turn the key all the way to the starter, just the ignition). That should get the engine going, if it doesn't start there might be something else wrong with it. As for cold starts, I'm no expert, since temperatures don't drop too low here in Brazil. All I've ever done is make sure the carburetor is primed, wether by manually adding fuel to the body of the carb or using the choke. It seemed to me your tuk tuk just wasn't primed, maybe because you parked it on a hill. Does it have a choke?

    • @aussieespanol
      @aussieespanol  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That’s some really solid tips mate. I now know for next time 🙌🏼 It’s got a choke yeah but also got no clue how to use it to prime/start the vehicle. #allthegearnoidea 🤣

    • @BigJimDenver
      @BigJimDenver ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Dead on. We would hard release the clutch though. Turning the key while rolling will make no difference to my knowledge.

  • @oraldribblesjrakasaliva
    @oraldribblesjrakasaliva ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Just a tip when roll starting, get yourself rolling to about the speed of first gear pull the clutch in and put her in first then release the clutch and give her some gas. If you are rolling faster than first gear then you need to let the clutch out in second gear. No need to use the starter when roll starting

    You actually need less airflow at altitude to maintain the same fuel to air ratio because there is less air at high altitude. You’d think you’d need more air because there is less air but the engines pull less air to begin with at higher altitude so to maintain the proper vacuum you need less airflow from the smaller jet.

    G'day from Australia
    That "little gold screw" is called a main jet 😋
    Depending on the type of carburettor, there could also be a needle with notches and a circlip
    By adjusting the position of the circlip, you adjust the height of the needle, which might also help with the altitude
    Cheers

    • @fjlthycruisertouringaustralia

      Basically the engine needs more air
      Can you modify the airbox to let more air into the filter
      Make sure the filter is clean
      Fitting a new main jet of the correct size will increase the air ratio of the fuel mixture being burn when your foot is flat on the throttle
      Lifting the needle also helps with this
      I believe the screws you're playing with on the sidexare air mixture screw (which you're maxing out the amount of adjustment and is why you need the bigger jet) and idle screw to try to smooth it out

    • @fjlthycruisertouringaustralia
      @fjlthycruisertouringaustralia ปีที่แล้ว

      On tuk tuk UK TH-cam channel, there's an how to adjust carburettor video from 5 years ago (google result)

    • @fjlthycruisertouringaustralia
      @fjlthycruisertouringaustralia ปีที่แล้ว

      Two screws on the side of the carburettor
      The lower one closer to you is to introduce more fuel by turning it anticlockwise (out) a quarter of a turn at a time
      The higher one further away is the idle screw, you increase the idle speed by turning it clockwise a quarter of a turn at a time

  • @oraldribblesjrakasaliva
    @oraldribblesjrakasaliva ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I may be wrong but the screw that you adjusted was the just the idle screw which adjusts how much high it idles. This will not change how well it runs normally. Carburettors are something to get used to.

      Turn ignition on

      Roll down hill
      Release clutch
      Which will turn engine over
