It really helps to have a paper quality that is kind of "raggy". I used soft construction paper. The tortillon is softish, but I really like it. They don't lats as long, but since I can make my own, I just make more!! LOL! Thanks for sharing.
Great question. I suspect that it would play a part. I always have students use copy paper because it's convenient, but light weight drawing paper would probably work better. Heavy weight drawing paper might be too hard to roll.

When trying to roll it at first to get it tight apparently using a needle/pin helps to keep it straight and tight.
