This is why we need wealth limits of 250 million dollars per person and limits on total number of homes a person or corporation can own at one time to 10 homes regardless of size . Capitalism is a good system but like driving on a instate we need rules . Other wise the big trucks could run over all the little cars it's just common sense or doing the right thing humanity or ask the Christian people would jesus be a huge land developer and wall street investment banker and screw everyone possible over because technically is not against the law just morally wrong

We can blame Reagan for that. Policies from the 1890s led to the Great depression and Reaganomics the trickle-down economic system he thought might work this time for God knows what reason and it has led to all of these mini recessions. Trickle-down economics doesn't work, wealthy people want to hang on to their money and without regulations demanding they give it up, the higher upper-middle lower classes all suffer because we have to pay for everybody else including the wealthy. I keep saying people need to stop voting outside their league and start voting for their wallet, that is the only way they will see more money come to them.

Many corporations lack the regulations needed to protect their employees and that's where boycotting comes in. It's just people are unable to not buy things that they really don't need, it's a status symbol to have everything and anything. Air pollution isn't being helped by same-day or 1-day overnight delivery. There needs to be extreme regulations on the amount of airplanes these companies are allowed to use at one time and vehicles at one time. If someone doesn't want to wait for toilet paper, they can walk down to the nearest Bodega or take their truck and drive to the nearest Walmart, and get some. Although we should be boycotting Walmart at this point, it's basically the only thing I don't boycott because I need to shop somewhere lol

It is literally impossible for me to survive on my current income. I still rely on parents to help pay for things for me because of how bad our society has become. The one thing that really pisses me off is when people on Facebook act like my problem is just bad budgeting and that I could afford to survive if I just managed my better. I was warned my homeowners insurance could be a high as half my income for the year! 😱 what are the disabled supposed to do? He will make more than his yearly salary in a few years just doing side work. There are ways to make it as a young adult if you make the correct choices and don’t bury yourself in debt and work hard. I bought my house in the "ghetto" of my city for cash. In the last 2 years my property tax has increased by 114%. So, even if you own your home property tax has become crippling if you are low income, a senior on fixed income, or disabled. At this time I have to set aside $200.00 a month so I can pay my property tax. Just for the record my home is 980 square feet which includes my unfinished basement. It was built in 1929. This is the result of gentrification. My grandchildren told me that they will never be able to buy a place to live in their lifetime.

Jessica McCabe’s rant was so spot on and relatable. The cost of living here in Canada is also out of hand. I live in B.C. and even outside of the two main cities, Vancouver and Victoria, the cheapest and shittiest homes still go for $875K+ but most homes start at $1.2M. Rent is even worse. I’m “lucky” because I only pay $1700/month for a 320 sqft studio apartment in Victoria that I started renting a year ago. Now, this same place would go for $2200/month. The average rent for a one bedroom in Vancouver is $2800 and across B.C. It’s $2550. Groceries are also insanely expensive. The same basket of groceries I bought five years ago costs me double now.
I make more than the average person (but not a ton), however, between rent, groceries, student loans payments, utilities and other expenses I’m still just barely getting by or breaking even. I had to start digging into my savings to get by and now there’s nothing left and I’ve been unable to contribute more.
I keep working hard to try to move up in my career so I can make more money but it feels like every time I do make progress or get a raise, the goal posts shift and it doesn’t end up making difference. I really don’t know how the average American pays for all the things I mentioned above AND their healthcare costs on top of that.

Saving at least 20% of your income in a 401(k) can help ensure that you have enough money to retire comfortably. By saving this much, you can take advantage of investing in the stock market and potentially grow your retirement savings over time.

The problem isn't that there aren't enough houses being built. It's that wealthy people and companies are buying up all the property and turning them all into rentals, and jacking the prices.
This is happening all over the world. The way to fix it is with legislation. Companies are profit driven, and anything they can do, including making the housing market completely unaffordable, is what they will do. Some kind of control over corporate ownership will HAVE to happen - say, limiting what % of living space in a city may be owned by a corporation, and maybe even limiting how many homes an individual may own. That's me thinking about it for 10 seconds. I'm sure smarter people working at it for longer would be able to come up with legislation that would actually work.
But something people are forgetting is that to make houses globally affordable to their local markets, the price will have to drop by something like 75%. And obviously a lot of real estate owners would be angry at the loss in value, but do we want to have properties that PEOPLE can buy and live in, and raise their families, or do we want corporations to own everything and charge ever-raising rents forever?

I mean...kinda closing the barn doors after the horses escaped, no? My in-laws live in Richmond since the 80s. The parents can't sell because there is nowhere they can afford to go afterward. The kids are having to move a few towns over (New West, Surrey, or White Rock,) and are still challenged to find affordable housing...

I make $2737 a month on Social Security, drive an 18 yo car and cannot afford a single occupancy apartment in Wilmington, NC. I'll be 67 this year and have to do a house-share with 2 other individuals. I hate it. And housing prices go up steadily and Wilmington's answer to the housing shortage? To build luxury townhouses and single family homes on every available inch of land.

As a parent of adult children with decent paying jobs, for years, I've said the same thing! Our children can not afford to pay RENT, and parents want them to move out! I had my 1st NYC apt at age 21! Young people today can't do that! What I find disgusting is that African Americans and others have suffered this for years and NOWWW that White people are feeling the pain, it's a problem! I guess better late than never. It's just the ole: "If you can convince the lowest white man he's better than the best colored man, he won't NOTICE you're picking his pocket. Hell, give him somebody to look down on, and he'll empty his pockets for you." 😬 President Lyndon B. John.

The actual reason there is a housing shortage is not other homeowners, it’s developers and builders. They don’t want to build affordable houses because they don’t find it “profitable” enough. I own my house in Detroit. I live next to two vacant lots. I would LOVE to see new houses built in those empty lots because it would increase the value of my house. Don’t blame the homeowners, that’s a completely false narrative.

Up until recently I was an electrician not far from you in Michigan, and you're right, that's a good part of the problem. Everything getting built is a 3-5 bedroom, 1.5 - 3 bath, suburban cookie cutter builds. We literally aren't allowed to build small affordable housing in 78% of this state thanks to zoning laws written by special interest groups.
Of course, everything we built was also ultimately owned and developed by corporations like Blackrock and Vanguard, with 30 year balloon mortgages that would trap people in a lifetime of debt, so ownership was also a part of the issue.

And get this -- She wasn't simply talking about a one-bedroom, two-bedroom, three-bedroom apartment -- She was talking about having to pay two grand to live in a STUDIO apartment in ALABAMA! "Studio" means you don't even have a WALL separating your bedroom area from your kitchen area. Now, I'm certain about the $2000 for a studio, but I remember when I was a teenager, ('90 -'92) my mother paid just over $900 for a nice 3-bedroom apartment in Brooklyn, NY! Rent prices are effing insane! 😡😡
