  • I have a huge fascination for stuff from the DDR- the different take and solutions to transportation is fascinating.
So of course I could not decline when I was offered a VERY green Simson SR2... but what did I buy?

You did a nice job. I am Dutch. In 1988 we had some of our GDR family over. Before they left again I asked if I could come with them for holiday. They talked about it with my parents because of arranging a visa in such a small period. It was a yes. Being there ( near Dresden) I wanted to visit an other family member. My cousin, 19 at that time, had a Simson moped and an MZ motorcycle ( he still has these very both machines). Okay, take the Simson. But in NL you are only allowed to drive a moped when being 16. You are now in Germany. So, as a 15 y/o with little to no experience on a moped a drove the Simson through the smaller city, being a boy from the west in communist Germany. A had such a helmet like you have but white. It was a great holiday 👍

Might be worth checking the exhaust port these small mopeds make a lot of carbon that can restrict the flow of gases and reduce power

My first uk motorcycle was an MZ ts125, I bought it in 1986, it was based on the dkw125, it was well made and reliable.

Not sure many non-Brits would get that reference. The Danish Heath Robinson was called Storm P.

Lovely machine! I very much enjoyed my Simson S51 when I was a student. Now I would enjoy one of those slower ones. :) One thing to add: be cautious of new reproduction replacement parts. They at least in the past have been of extremely low quality. If one machine is touchy with spark plugs, usually the Beru Isolator ones work best with those old GDR machines.

What fun with such an unusual moped, I think it's interesting with unusual engines. Hope you find a puller soon.

I remember those mopeds from childhood, the were quite solid, the most popular colour was sort of burgundy. In the '80 when i grew up to have the simson *i later incarnations like s50, sr50 was the dream. They were so reliable...while I was crying trying to fix my Jawa moped....:) horrible loud czechoslovakian wanna be vespa thing :))

I agree with you with the Eastern Block gear, I collect film cameras and love the stuff they made in the DDR and Russia. It's very sturdy.

I have a few Eastern Bloc things.. Wartburg 1.3, later 4 stroke one, a 1978 Trabant and 2 Skoda Estelles as they are called in the UK and a Riga 13 Moped.. same result for me, I put fuel in it and it started fine 😄

If that was a new carb fitted by a previous owner, it could be that it was not tuned properly, so could be under-fuelling, it does seem rather reluctant to rev up so could just need the mix adjusting a bit... :)

I loved this, your moped videos are my favourites of all your garage shenanigans!
Simpson made very capable little off-road bikes for competition in the ISDT (International Six-Days Trial - sometimes called the Olympics of Motorcycling). I think they were 50cc and 75cc machines. Similar to your moped they had leading-link front forks, and the internet has some pictures from those events - around 1960s - 1970s. Thanks, Les in UK 🇬🇧

Love the moped and the mods to keep it going. I had access to a moped very similar called a Bown which I believe was Dutch, was also 2 speed with clutch. The engine was a Sach and after unblocking the 2 stroke silencer and poking out what seemed like a thousand holes it helped performance a little. Great fun and happy memories from the early 70s thanks for showing

Cool little moped with an unusual part! The right engine cover is from the Romanian version, Carpati moped, that was similar but actiually a 68cc engine made by Metrom. The romanian Carpati used a kick starter instead of the bycle pedal start. Also the romanian one had a different cylinder and piston and a slightly bigger carburator.

Another great video! I've owned a 1976 Simson S50 for a number of years after restoring it to running condition. It's great fun around town, and parts are easy to find and quite cheap. I tend to use 'Racing Planet' as they have quite a few Simson bits and pieces.

Cool! I had a Simson SR50, a 50 cc scooter and it was absolutely great!
Apart from the fact that it died at every light and the carb could not be set up correctly. 😂
Was great at the time, but now I wouldn't swap my BMW R 1150 GS for anything.
One thing about the SR50, it's controls are exactly like a motorbike with the exception that the gears on foot are the other way round. But this bike really hardwired using motorbike controls into my brain and when I did my motorbike license (30 year later!), I had no problem getting used to the controls. Speed and leaning into corner is a different matter, I will always have chickenstrips on my tires, but I'm OK with that.

To put things in context about the GDR, the Soviet as part of the collective punishment of the Germans refused to allow the country to be well a country and anything of value was sent to the Soviet as reparations for the ravaging of Russia whilst the East Germans enjoyed their country to be a car park for some of the biggest collections of Soviet armour. I remember this in clarity full well on the autobahn corridor to Berlin where us British were told to not talk to E German police, report to the Soviets if any E German police talked to us or tried to stop us in transit and if any did they ended up being terribly punished for it by the Soviet. So what to do when ones country has all its "good stuff" purloined by a foreign power, is to try and make do and the E Germans did amazingly well, only have to look at the Ruhla watches esp the Ruhla chronograph which showed a tin plate steel and brass, no jewel watch can still be very accurate and exceptionally cheap to make or service. Saxon watches were made sometimes in the Trabant factories and were the export watches from E Germany, very rugged and again cheap as chips. Fair play to the folks with a jackboot across their necks they did survive best they could.

Lovely little machine, these could have been basic transport for a number of people in the DDR. My father had a DDR motorcycle of around 50cc engine capacity, and this was in 1974/5 in of all places ......Dubai. This was when the place was mostly desert and one could ride a small motorcycle the short distance - about 2km - to and from work like he did.
I tried looking up DDR motorcycle brands, but could not find it. However, I found a picture of your type motorcycle in a museum in a restored condition.🐞

I'm also a fan of things from the time of the DDR/GDR too! I own a 1988 Trabant P601 Kombi. That little moped is just awesome, and for its age it's in really good condition too. The engine size of 47.5cc is unusual, why not 49cc?
My first moped was a Raleigh from 1965, like the Simpson it was basic transport. A very enjoyable video, I wasn't expecting it to start!

Metrom was a romanian factory for small 2 stroke engines in Brasov. There was also o very similar moped made in Romania called Carpati. You probably have a DDR made moped with a romanian engine? I also have a Metrom engine ( slightly different) on my Mobra 50s motorcycle. You can see that on my channel.
