My Dad was stationed in the late 60s as one of the commanding officers at Davis Monthan when it was a major SAC/Titan missle base. I was only 7-8, but do those mountains bring back memories! Thanks
We flew my (as it carried my name on the side as the DCC) C-130E to AMARG from Little Rock back in the early to mid 90's. A few years later we went TDY to Davis Monthan AFB from Little Rock and took the tour through the Boneyard and came across my bird and it still carried my name on the side. The tour guide let me get out and have a picture taken next to my old bird...
The white stuff is a coating called spraylat. Underneath the white coating is a black sealant to keep out moisture. The white coating reflects the intense heat from the sun and keeps the aircrafts interior heat down.
@7:29 F-106a. Stationed at 5th FIS October 1966 to November 1967 at Minot AFB, "Spittinkittens". Then on to Panama Canal Zone. Below freezing to 90 degrees with 90 % humidity. I learned quickly what it was like to be in Vietnam.
I remember Jeremy Clarkson doing a bit on these planes at this location for the old Top Gear. He said these planes are still usable and could be ready for combat in a week or something. I think its just surplus. They are still capable by the looks of the planes and the effort that they took to protect them.
@PfhUkJiu101 That was a YC-14 Surface Blowing STOL Cargo plane developed by Boeing as an intended C-130 Replacement. The project was cacelled in the 1980s.
@UberVersatile - a lot of these planes wont be scrapped, at least not for years. Some are being held in reserve, in case they are needed in the future. Some might be sold on or given as military aid to other airforces. Some - in this video C130 transports and Sea King helicopters - might have potential civilian use. Finally they are rarely just scrapped, many components eg engines, avionics etc will be stripped to keep other aircraft operational.
Man i went a month before you in july of 09 & that tour was closed for the day, i was kinda pissed lol Did you see the old huge plane that use to carry spaceships?
Awesome when we went by many moons ago the SR-71 was outside and covered with a tarp, and moons before that It did not cost that much to get in and that hanger must not be that old and must be huge.
thank you for the video I was actually thinking about this the other day in a very helpful to my question. which was why are those planes their power they being maintained and how many were there.
Well on the same subject, think about this, many of those aircraft are still flyable or can be restored to flight, if a major war broke out that threatened the us directly imagine if these aircraft were reactivated to supplement the existing fleet. It would be a site to see. Plus most of our vetrens are still within decent ages to fly most of them even if in secondary roles
I agree, poor editing. However, I was to be stationed there from June 1969 to December 1969. Preisdent Richard M Nixon decided otherwise with troop reduction as his first order of business with an executive order. This and ending the draft made President Nixon my hero!! : ) He had Watergate, what is the scandel count now, 22+?
How can't they sell the old F16 etc? There must be some poor country's that want to buy it, if you dont have much than it's better to have some old F16 then nothing?
For the majority, "revolution" is turning over in bed: there aren't many "gilets jaunes" in the U.S. : people are too busy scrabbling to survive in a low-wage gig-work economy to take up arms against the super-elite and their puppet political institutions.
Go check out this place on Google Earth, it has the most planes of any storage yard in the world! To answer the question are they flyable, most are, while some are used for spare parts that's why they are coated with the white compound that wards off the extreme summer weather in Tucson Arizona. The reason they store them in Arizona is because of the low humidity there. Each of those newer planes like the early F-16's, F-15's, F-18's can be brought back to flying condition if ever they are needed as of right now the US have more flyable F-16's and F-15's than Pilots to fly them! well over a 1,000 F-16's and near 800 F-15's of all types in the USAF and Air National Guard plus the reserves! If you look on Google Earth type in Davis Monthan AFB, Tucson, Arizona and look towards the east of the air strip and you will see nearly 9,000 fighters, bombers, recon, attack, awacs and anything else that's flown in the last 40[50 years. B-52's getting their wings chopped off because of the nuclear treaty years back with Russia and all kinds of fascinating things.
The old B52s were obsolete anyway, needing resparring, new fan-engines and modern electronics to make their retention worthwhile. Although S.A.C. has gone, a small force of upgraded later B52s has been retained for special precision-bombing work that ICBM missiles and drones can't do. The planes' very-long-range capability makes them valuable, despite their low-speed and modern-day vulnerability.
That guy is mind numbing to listen to. I know about pretty much all of those aircraft there on that tour and so for me, that would be torture to listen to that sort of commentary. Noticed how he glazed very quickly over the F-14 Tomcat, one of of not the most iconic aircraft there and he skips right over it with out explaining the significance of that particular jet.
I do NOT support the scrapping of airplanes. I portest about it to every boneyard, including Mojave. I will be sure to wear a confederate flag in the boneyards to show that I do not like the scrapping of airplanes.
F35s cost $30,000,000 a throw; then there are the "Zumwalt"-Class stealth-ships at $4,000,,000,000 each ( I kid you not): great weapons to have in the coming war with the Chinese (who need to get rid of millions of surplus people): don't complain if you have a low-paid job and holes in your shoes: be patriotic and proud of your country. Now back to that boneyard.
I worked at this facility in the 80,s. Worked on most of these aircraft shown here.
My Dad was stationed in the late 60s as one of the commanding officers at Davis Monthan when it was a major SAC/Titan missle base. I was only 7-8, but do those mountains bring back memories! Thanks
Thanks for posting.......great memories of a lot of these military aircraft.....

how nice u can see how america has it all who else on earth has so many cool things thats why i love this country

good video, nice steady camerawork, timing & editing all xlnt. thanks for posting.
Love to see more . A Plane Restorers Dream . Phill , Mildura Victoria Australia.
Cool video, I remember seeing a coyote running through boneyard when I went there a few years back.
Whoa is that tour guide on speed? Here would be my dream job. If they let me in I would never leave.
Better than any security camera nowadays
wow, that was cool, spent my teenage years on this base, till i got my family kicked off the base! great memories

Holy cow! There's a YC-14 in the graveyard! My dad worked on that in the mid-late 1970's when Boeing was flight testing them at Edwards Airforce Base.
actually yes! alot of things adapted to civialian aircraft started with the military. these are museum pieces. and a damn fine museum at that.
@PfhUkJiu101 That was a YC-14 Surface Blowing STOL Cargo plane developed by Boeing as an intended C-130 Replacement. The project was cacelled in the 1980s.

love the tour guide's speel and slight 'accent' not sure but sounds just a bit Easterner. new jersey?
Most of these can be re-commissioned in a short period of time if I'm not mistaken.
@ 5:23, what type of aircraft is that? It looks like a Transall C-160 with jet engines.
Very nice video. Thanks for posting.
(I do wish the video was shot more in correlation with the guide, though)
On the video it was shown that the engines were placed in a different place to protect them.
It is the Boeing YC-14 that was designed as a transport plane to compete with the Hercules. Only two were ever built.
Man i went a month before you in july of 09 & that tour was closed for the day, i was kinda pissed lol
Did you see the old huge plane that use to carry spaceships?
Theres a tour of this? I live here, when I wanna see the Airplane Graveyard, I go for a walk, haha.
4:17 Whats this large brown aircraft, with c-14 painted on the side of the engine?
Agreed. And then hit the ejection seat....and shout WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.
can you tell me why they put the white stuff on the planes?
Nos aviões são apenas carcaças ou os componentes mecânicos ainda estão instalados?
ey guys how far from las vegas ?.....
Are all these spares and so still usable?
is it possible to buy one of these
Love to start up some of these's bad boys back up sad seeing them just sitting there!
Beautiful airplanes😍
Awesome when we went by many moons ago the SR-71 was outside and covered with a tarp, and moons before that It did not cost that much to get in and that hanger must not be that old and must be huge.
That museum was used in transformers 2 :D nice vid
You mean the AC-130?
Wow I wanna buy one to restore anyone know how much
thank you for the video I was actually thinking about this the other day in a very helpful to my question. which was why are those planes their power they being maintained and how many were there.
It's a whole damn Air Force
Well on the same subject, think about this, many of those aircraft are still flyable or can be restored to flight, if a major war broke out that threatened the us directly imagine if these aircraft were reactivated to supplement the existing fleet. Shoulda split the audio from the video and resynced it.

is this place open to the public? or do you have to buy tour tickets? or sneak in?
Yes its open to the public. I lived right down the road from that place.
@reverseflush i was thinking the same il bring some stickies too and we can try hot box a c 130 lol!
Are these for sale?
When I was a kid I used to force my dad to bring me there every week.
@Reverseflush, Hahaha,
I actually did just that in one of the Boeing 707's out there back in '87, and I know I'm not the only one.
That sad that these beautiful machines beautiful aircraft are in lamentable condition
If brought back to life, their routine maintenance would cost a bomb.
Really? So, I could buy like any of those jets?
I Lived in Tucson and Marana :)
Nikolai Bellic
I want to live there!!!

+[̲̅G̲̅][̲̅A̲̅][̲̅M̲̅][̲̅E̲̅][̲̅S̲̅] [̲̅&̲̅] [̲̅M̲̅][̲̅O̲̅][̲̅R̲̅][̲̅E̲̅] Because cant sell also mean not allowed to sell.
Why are they just keeping those planes there. Why dont they just scrap them. They would get lots of material to build new planes.
the sr71 was outside under a canopy a while back ,,good to see it inside,,
airplane at 040 is used in transformers
*go into a plane* I wonder what that buttom do -------> [LUNCH] *press* Opps :D
yes
6:42 A-7 some nations still use this plane
when the revolution comes, you people with pilot's licenses know where to go
For the majority, "revolution" is turning over in bed: there aren't many "gilets jaunes" in the U.S. : people are too busy scrabbling to survive in a low-wage gig-work economy to take up arms against the super-elite and their puppet political institutions.
i feel the same way bro
crazy human being
i drive by there every morning to o to work
yeah i watched it on top gear you can buy a whole air force if you want to
LOL all this is probably better than what most of the world has in service and this is the aircraft we arent using
Would like to ride my ATV there and hang out in a plane cockpit as it rains while I smoke skunk bud.

So many decommissioned aircraft...I want one badly. Maybe I could put it in my front yard to intimidate the skateboarders that go by my house.
Maybe 747 fuselages could be converted into accommodation for the tent-city peoole infesting down-town areas of L A..and other cities.
Wau..
nation in progress, look up the F-22 or F-35
I'm sure with planes couldn't they be sold off instead just sticking them in a field to rot

love F-16
Transformers; Revenge of the Fallen brought me here
Fix some f-15s up and donate them to Poland or sell them for cheap to them, they'd probable buy like a a lot.
I'll still be sure to wear to wear a shirt saying that I do not support the scrapping of airplanes with a confederate flag on it.
So, is this the Obama aircraft fleet!? Forward America!
I do NOT support the scrapping of airplanes. I portest about it to every boneyard, including Mojave. I will be sure to wear a confederate flag in the boneyards to show that I do not like the scrapping of airplanes.
NOT HEALTHY...
The guy needs to talk slower a bit...
Your tax dollars at work ...
tax payer money at work?
