- How do we manage to move beyond 'the ocean of love' characterizing our earliest relations to our mothers, to a position in which we have adopted the 'Name-of-the-Father'? Lacan's re-conceptualization of the Oedipus complex provides a structural account of how we move from the imaginary intensity of the maternal bond to a position in the symbolic world. Along the way, we highlight the 'dad exaggeration effect' (which means that, our lecturer is, alas, not Captain America), and highlight a series of grumpy Lacanian rebukes of developmental psychology, noting also some of the shortcomings of how the Oedipus complex has often been applied.

Derek, you are Amazing! I've been curious about Lacan for a long time, and a recent lecture by Patricia Gherovici here in Gothenburg reignited my interest. Now I'm bingeing all I can, including other youtube videos and Fink's The Lacanian Subject. But through it all, your channel is what I return to as the most comprehensible (to the extent that this subject can be comprehended) and exciting source.
One of my aims is to use these insights in criticizing the golden calf of identity in relation to trans issues. I'm especially curious about the role of the imaginary vs the symbolic in identification, so if you'd ever have the time to expand on that then it would be most appreciated!

Thank you for this lecture, Dr. Hook! I'm a PHD student working on Buddhism and taking linguistic theory on the side, and I had some trouble understanding Freud and Lacan. This is so helpful.
The father exaggeration effect in traditional families (50s - ?) is that he, dressed in suit and tie, or work clothes, adopts a special identity that sets him apart from being stuck at home all day with mom and siblings. He becomes special. Hence, he automatically becomes inflated in the minds of children. (Only thinking aloud here from childhood memories and emotions. (Similar to Dr. Hook's)
Great video! I’ve become very interested in Lacan through my reading of Deleuze and Guattaris Anti-Oedipus and didn’t want to box myself into one perspective on psychoanalysis(as D&Gs perspective is that of harsh critique). I was wondering if you had given any time to the work of Anti-Oedipus or Deleuze and Guattari more generally? Thanks!
Yes I find their use of the concept of desire very interesting even though it is obviously very different from Lacan’s. They provide a fascinating conceptual vocabulary. One of the many differences between Lacan and D&G of course concerns Lacan’s intent on extending Freud’s clinical legacy but some fascinating parallels could be noted as in respect of their conceptualisation’s of desire.
As a former Analysand provided to a Freudian in the 70s, and now deeply interested in new updated thinking on Psychoanalysis, I'm only vaguely aware of Laconia (?) This is the first presentation that's grabbed my attention, now realizing that perhaps 😀 Laconia is the most impactful constructive approach.
Sitting here listening, I vaguely recall some recorded dreams during my early 20s that indicated my knowledge of not having a penis being female. My brother did. 😅😂😮
Apologies for all these ideas, yet if I were involved in research, I would gather a group of 20 - 30 year old females and ask them to record their dreams for 3 to 6 months. When in my 20s I dreamt prolifically. Such dream data could shed meaningful interpretation of the concept of penis envy. It matters not if these 20+ year olds are in analysis - some of each would be fascinating 😀.
