Tarkovsky was on point here, I think there is a definite connection between spirituality, aesthetics and meaning. People who are anti-religion are usually people who have a very shallow understanding of why it has been an integral part of human civilization for thousands of years. It is easier to dismiss religion outright, than to actually struggle intellectually with what it means and how the world would be without it. Does religion have its flaws? Absolutely, but so do things like democracy ,capitalism and scientific method (all are affected by human bias and corruption); the proper way forward is to recognize those flaws and evolve intellectually and spiritually.

I absolutely agree! Thank you for the well-written comment. I might also add that this intellectual struggle with what religion means resulted in three of the greatest films of all time - Bergman's 'Silence of God' trilogy.

Tarkovsky has definitely complicated my relationship with religion, as I think he is quite accurate in his specific point in this excerpt. Even beyond this excerpt his films have really impacted my belief in religion (rather it's impact on society not really belief in a high being). You've got great taste in filmmakers! Thanks for the upload, been meaning to watch this documentary for a while.

I feel like most of people got this wrong, its not about religion as much as belief, he explains that art comes from meaning, of course it could be religion but it could be anything, I don't really know but i feel like it isn't as plane as just religion

Maybe a better concept for the "religion" of believers would be something like the "transcendent". If no one believes in the spiritually transcendent, there is no common universal language that people can work with on a deep human level to explain, analyze, and then work towards alleviating common suffering. I think it's easier to share these ideas in a common transcendent framework, though, hence the focus on organized religion-- but it doesn't need to be that.

Replace religion with ideology and I think he has great points. For many civilisations that don't function with religion i.e. China , ideology plays a big role in shaping people's life, culture and a sense of purpose in order to persevere in their lives.

@@rangowilder He seems to claim that there is an interdependence between religion and culture, as if there could be no cultures without religion. Why, then, do we see a correlation between the religiosity of a country and its anti-social phenomena, e.g. number of violent crimes? Logically, too, the assumption would only make sense if everyone professed the same religion (and the same interpretation of this religion). Otherwise, religion usually causes division (as Jesus said).
Tarkovsky also thinks that a poet must be a believer. So he has to deny every atheist poet (e.g. Nietzsche) either his poetry or his atheism. As long as he, or anyone else, has not demonstrated this, it is wrong to claim that a poet cannot be an atheist.
In the end, he does not seem to make any discernible distinction between religion and spirituality, as if they were the same thing.

That's some crazy translation, at lease at the beginning! At at the beginning, Tarkovsky says if they is a a true poet, they cannot be un unbeliever

religion is the wrong word. tarkovsky fails here. the word he seeks is ritual.
