DEBUSSY : SUITE BERGAMASQUE - pianista BRUNO CANINO

SUITE BERGAMASQUE - note informative :

One of my favorite Debussy pieces. Clair de Lune gets all the adoration, but each part is wonderful in its own right.

I agree with you. It's very easy for the Passepied to be played woodenly, and the pianist here plays it lyrically. The tones themselves are not only better, but it adds structure to something that might otherwise fall into an uninspired perpetuum mobile. Parts of the Menuet also have a "jump" in them that's perfectly suited for the dance number that it's supposed to be, but he keeps it in balance. The Menuet's development becomes (in my opinion) so grandly beautiful that it's easy to forget that it's actually supposed to be a dance. I would really enjoy hearing him perform this live.

It is played so 'in the moment'. Like an actor who is surprised and responding to events rather than reciting from memory.
(The sound is a bit harsh for my tastes though. Is it just the recording?).

Anyone notice that the way he touch the piano somehow reflect the Horowitz's style - flat and low hands still with full energy. I find it pretty rare pianist today do so. This is no-ordinary educated style, is it?

Without Debussy and his great performer like Bruno ,
the classical music world would have been very lonely and insipid ,
and the enjoyment and pleasures of the classical music would have been less ,
and I would feel that the classical music is like the taste of vapid beer

+Mrphilharmonic I was thrown off by the 'Alfonso' as well - difficult to see the Steinway emblem. I think a lot of the great sound in any performance has as much to do with how they're mic'ing and sound engineering/hall they're in. I was also taken by his hand placement - but in the end this is one of my favorite interpretations of Bergamasque!

This man totally destroyed the prelude and Menuet, and not in a good way. If you listen to this played by
Claudio Arrau that is how this piece MUST have been meant to be played. This man is just hitting notes on a keyboard, there is absolutely no dynamic feel to it whatsoever. He's managed to completely suck the life out of one of the most beautiful pieces of music I've ever heard. My daughter is the piano player in my house and had she heard this man plan it before hearing it by Claudio she would never have wanted to learn the piece. Interpretation is everything.

Joe Falasca - You sure know what you are writing about. This monstrous interpretation goes against the subtle and vaporous impressionistic style that few pianists (Arrau, above all) seem to be able to grasp. Signore Canino turned this delicate composition into a boisterous Italian musical orgy instead of a French sweet musical banquet.

It’s an old video. I think it’s from 1996. You may not be able to hear all the dynamics, but I heard some of them.

not so good he was really stressed. it's not amazing to play fast if there is no variations in the phrases. he was also to excited on claire de lune. Claudio arrau is still the best pianist who can understand Debussy

      Is only YOUR opinion.-

Eduardo - And IT MAY ALSO be Debussy´s opinion since he clearly stated "Moderato-tempo rubato" for the Prelude rather than the rushed "Molto allegro e con ritmo preciso e inalterabile" demonstrated by signore Canino. YUCK!!!. Again: Claudio Arrau truly respects the composer´s wishes (despite his excesive use of the sustain pedal).

Eduardo: Your comment is only YOUR opinion as well -- as are almost all comments on TH-cam. Maybe millions agree with 4thSexPistol; maybe none do.
And if one cares about music, one is going to have opinions -- opinions that won't always match yours.
