Ah the days when samplers were only available to serious artists. Zoolook still stands up as fresh today. One of his greatest albums. Sadly for me his direction has become lost in the techno mediocre genre. Fascinating footage as I have never seen him working in the studio. Thanks so much for sharing.

Yeah Jarre has fallen from a true visionary down to almost a copy of all the copies of himself. I guess he's having fun at least, but his newest music is not much better than the countless "DAW-less jams" that have populated TH-cam and electronic music groups on Facebook. Zoolook, however, was really a pioneering album at that time, and the process must have been painstaking. Much respect to this man for his whole early career.
@@ini9258 Well imho for me Zoolook, as limited in in technology as it was then, sounds far more exciting, fresh and organic than most electronic music today created with zillions of vsts etc. You can do far more with less.
Wish I had that tech in 1984 all I had was a VIC-20, just brought a Atari 400 and Commodore C64 - had to wait to the end of 1985 to have a basic Casio sampling keyboard - still making music since 1982 :o)
Zoolook is one of my favorite records of all time, and this MIDI sampling technique was very similar to the Soundtracker concept on the Amiga 500. Those were the days!
Jean Michel Jarre and his Zoolook cd album this instruments, equipments etc were used ☺️ > LINN LM-1 > LINN LinnDrum > SIMMONS SDS V > EMINENT 310 U > GARFIELD ELECTRONICS Doctor Click > E-MU Emulator > FAIRLIGHT CMI-II > ARP 2600 > EMS Synthi AKS > MOOG 55 > OBERHEIM OB-Xa > SEQUENCIAL CIRCUITS Prophet 5 > YAMAHA DX7 > EMS Vocoder 1000
And when you have access the Fairlight sounds library of this period you realize JMJ didn't go "all around the world for sampling all the sounds" for Zoolook as a lot of these sounds were actualy included when you bought a Fairlight CMI. 😉 And this not a problem as this album is excellent.

Definitely! I heard the same thing! You can even see on the screen @6:23 into the video that one sample is called "HONGROI2" - which means "Hungarian2"! And I'm pretty sure it's one of the samples that can actually be heard in the Zoolook album, so this to me is proof positive that there are (mangled) samples of Hungarian speech in it.

I think it's this "és már múlik richy alszom" which translates from Hungarian as "depends on how well I sleep". I played it from another device into Google translate and even played back on there sounds the same when the AI talks it back. However, I sent the link to this video to a Hungarian friend who says it translates to something different like "I'm glad you came back". Let's just say JMJ has put a right conundrum on there!
@@paisteformula6021 It can be any language really. He might have spliced and diced the sounds. He did it on purpose for he did not want the words to be recognizable. He took parts of vocals and put them together. 'Bizzare' however is a standard sample from the Fairlight library so is the timpani sound.
Would??? He is still very much alive and still very active, in fact, he is making modern music today with modern softwares like Ableton live and he is really excited about AI and VR projects. Listen to 'Oxymore' from 2022, it's modern but amazing. He is not into nostalgia, he is a very young and energetic 76 year old.

There is no such thing as "MIDI sampling".
The Midi upgrade for the IIx was optional , extremely expensive and wasn't yet available during '83
