Thanks mate, had to take a wee break. Got a nice backlog of rums to review so hope to get a few more reviews out over the next few months. Picking my favourite bottle of the year is not going to be easy. Take care mate 🥃
Great to see you open this bottle and you encouraged me to open mine at long last. Yep, the smell is pouring out just when you open the seal. These Kill Devil Hampdens are classic off the the radar funk bombs but this is way below the 10 and 11. I completely agree with your nosing and tasting notes. It drinks well neat with the classic aged Jamaica (Hampden) profile of concentrated pineapple, green olive brine, ripe papaya and mango. Perhaps a tiny bit of banana but its not too overripe. Yes, a bit of coconut and all the other stuff. It takes water very well. I bought two back in the day and the 10 and 11 as well. Still have an unopened 11. I've recently decided to make a start and dip into my stash. There's a fair amount of it and I bought it to save for some later date after all. Besides, we cant take it with us to the great distillery in the sky.
Hey mate great to hear from you and glad that you are doing well. Yeah really something special with the Hampden Kill Devils. As you said the 16 does not have the same levels of funk of the 10 and 11 but a superb bottle in it's own right...for me a bit more refined for a higher ester Hampden.Keep an eye on auctions mate...they do come up now and again and I got this one not that much more than the original retail. For some reason they don't seem to be as popular as the Velier releases as an example but that suits me just fine. By the way, just a heads up in case you have not heard about it, there is a belter of a rum currently on MOM, a rather funky South Pacific Fiji 13 yo. On the nose feels almost like a continental Guyana with the funk it has. Does drink a little hot but packs a lot of flavour. Still have to do a review of it but it will be my bargain single cask rum of the year. It's one of MOM's own bottlings, bottled at 61% ABV. Check it out if you are interested, but hurry as it keeps on disappearing. As always mate a pleasure to hear from you. Keep well and see you soon 🥃
@@whiskyjourney175 I love the Kill Devil 16. Truth be told I probably prefer it to the younger expressions. I love the extremity of them but they are a bit over the top. I completely agree with you about Kill Devil bottlings. Thanks for the MOM Fiji heads up. I'll pick one (maybe two). I often buy MOM bottlings and just opened their 12 year secret Islay which logic suggests is Caol Ila or Bunnahabhain. Dram Mor have got some interesting rum at good prices too. I've got a fine 10 year from Guatemala. I also picked up an interesting Nectar of the Daily Drams bottling from Belize. Good stuff. Cheers mate. 🥃
@@welshtoro3256 Just checked out the secret Islay and that is a great price. The price would suggest it is Caol Ila, but I love Caol Ila so will keep that on my list. Yeah I have several rums from Dram Mor - their 13 yo T.D.L. is a banger, as is their Fiji 8 yo. Will need to keep an eye out for the Guatemala. Nectar of the Daily Drams also releases good stuff - still have a youngish New Yarmouth and Dok in my cabinet that I have when I am in the mood for some funk. I got one of the MOM Fiji and ordered 2 more after I had a taste. Pretty much a no-brainer for the cost. Cheers bud 🥃
Great to see you posting again mate. Been a while!

@@whiskyjourney175 The MOM Caol Ila 13 (refill oloroso) is a good one if you like that style.
@@welshtoro3256 Thanks for the recommendation bud. Will definitely keep an eye on it. Seems to be decent value for a 13 yo 🥃
