Spells and the like have a lot of flavour already baked into the casting, when all you do is shoot, stab or punch things it is good to spice it up with some coolness, it makes your character seem more badass and it keeps a player interested . . . more so than "I attack it, is it dead? I attack again"
The closer we get to the end of the campaign the more I hope Matt comes back for the final battle to bust in like a badass and save the day. And then I remember he's a leaf and my dreams crumble, just like he does.
He does say, however, that he will let Mark know when he's available to fill in a spot if they need him to. Which basically means he will be available off and on from now on at random...and potentially he might get invited for the finale.

Those were meant for a modern campaign, as it wouldn't really make sense to have a character knowing those spells unless they'd found something in First Light or something like that.

TacticalSBR by standard laws of probability each side of the die has an equal chance of appearing during any single roll. If you roll the same die repeatedly in a short period, there's a far greater chance of variety for the different sides to show up.
I'm starting to prefer the idea of Tom staying rather than Matt returning . I see enough Matt is uncharted and I think tom and Reynard's charm is so good In this campaign.
We has a battle royal in our game where I play a Wild Magic sorcerer. Out of a group of 7 (against a druid, a fighter and a paladin to name a few of the opposition!) my sorcerer came in second place. Only because I ran out of spells at the end and couldn't seem to land a hit on the paladin chasing me...

i think everyone needs to re-read what their characters abilities are and what they can do because damn there were a lot of mistakes . . . . like hellish rebuke for instance, it is in response to damage, it doesn't specify it needs to be from an attack roll, so a damaging spell or effect that forces you to make a save would still trigger it
It's up to the dm of course but I imagine it would be a stealth check to see if they noticed you and then a contested strength check with advantage or disadvantage based on the stealth check.

I know one spell that might well help in the Beholder-Guardian fight - the Modern Magic spells known as Off/On, Arcane Hacking, and Haywire
