Doolittle is often called the Father of Modern Queen Rearing, having developed the method of transferring young larvae from worker brood cells to special wax cups he fashioned from the rods of wooden rakes. Having spent over two decades to develop his methods, compare other systems, and evaluating the results, he finished the book on Christmas, 1888. In this book, Doolittle is very clear on shaking frames with queen cells on it: DON'T DO IT, or you'll get damaged queens / very low yields...
I have raised queens sporadically throughout my beekeeping adventure, but your video has me thinking that raising queens in the manor your discussing would add financial diversity that is very important in agriculture. Honey sales are good, but adding queens could be the answer! Your a wonderful speaker, great explanations. Thankyou

Happy new year!! I'm going to make 2023 better. I'm a first year beekeeper. We had a day that was 50 degrees the other day I opened my hive and found my bees dead 😂 I can't lie David it was a pretty bad blow. I did everything you recommend. Here in Logan Utah we had -6° weather for 2 weeks. I left my bees 80 lbs of honey and put a 20 lb sugarboard on. My last check in November I had one Verona mite. But I'm going to make 23 better I'm going to start off with two more hives and hope for the best!!!

Great video David! Good news here in Niles, MI. My Carniolan colony, a package from Utah seems to be thriving & the Nuc colony developed from bees overwintered in Florida are alive as well. They had a major die off from the early cold rain. This little warm up we had gave me opportunity to provide them pollen patties & clear the entrance. I also improved chances with top escape holes before spending the rest of the long weekend splitting firewood... Thanks for your encouragement & wisdom. Hope your conference is fruitful. Dave, thanks for the great information. I have raised a few queens using different methods including grafting. I greatly appreciate the explanation of the starter and finisher and the reasoning for no open brood in the starter. My excitement for raising queens at a larger scale is renewed, thanks buddy!

Thank you Brandon, that's good to hear that you like my setup. It's a work in progress. That particular studio room is undergoing major improvements. There is the background everyone is familiar with, the one that faces west, then a new one in under construction that's on the north wall, and yet another new one that faces east. Which you could have made it to hive life.

Hi David great video quick question. You mentioned that if one Queen emerges first she'll stab all the other Queen cells. Well then how come in a normal Hive there are swarms cells and supersedure cells all over the place? Don't those Queens go around and just stab all the Queen cells too? I just took a couple frames of supersedure cells to start some splits for the first ever, how can I be sure the original Queen in Hive number one hasn't stabbed them already?
I really appreciate all you do. I wish I could go to Tennessee but just really wasn't prepared. I do plan on trying to raise some queens this year

Wow! What a great video. So glad I am enrolled in the Ultimate course! I am SERIOUSLY considering selling queens. I have every intention of raising my own (have all the equipment and location in garage planned) , but the selling was just kind of a "thought" in the back of my mind all this fall. May just try selling this year if my grafts go well! Gonna try for Hive Life next year. Looks like a wonderful convention. Kamon and his lovely wife are really precious folks.

Sorrey David but I have never seen a Queen fly on a mateing flyt after 4-5 days first after 7-10 days and then it takes 36-48 hours when she lays the first eeg

I just want my bee keeping hobby to put a little back into itself... that way I'm not always losing for keeping them going if I can sell a couple of queens or even a nuc or 2 that would put some new equipment in my yard or pay for supplement feeds

I put all my queen cells in curler cages so I don't have any queens getting killed by any early emergers. My mentor puts cell protectors on her queen cells for the same reason. She grafts, I dont. Queens can emerge anywhere from 13-16 days. We did all our queen classes at our local club meetings

Hello I heard on a video that Queen returns are better if you have your mating Nooks separate from each other instead of on pallets. How do you feel about this? Obviously on a large scale you would probably need to be on pallets, but for the starters, how far apart do you recommend each colony be from each other? Thank you in advance! Gina
As long as you mark the entrance with shapes it is fine, but yes always further apart works better.
You can also fan them out into a large Crescent (Arc, Curve.)

Great series, but I have a couple questions. How early in the year do you start grafting? Also, how do you market your queens when you are just starting out? Lastly, I have VSH Italians, can or should I say these queens are overwintered VSH daughter queens? Oh, and I'll see you in Tennessee!!

You can start raising your own Queens : when you have Drones ! As without them, any Queen raised will not get Mated !
So many folk forget this important point. And, I guess it depends on your Weather. Do you have x3 Weeks of pending great conditions : warmth, moisture: re Floral availability ? Plenty of Pollen, Nectar, perfect Mating conditions. Or a month long wet Spell ? Get the picture. Do the planning, and Nature does the rest. 😎
In regards to VSH* genetics. Future Queens (Daughters) will have 50% Mother, 50% Drone Father.) Future Daugters will have, say, 25% (VSH) as Daughters daughter is Fathered by more Drones in each Generation... Think I got this right (?) Sure someone will state otherwise. I'm just a Hobby Beek, not a Geneticists.
* I guess if the Queen is Artifically Inseminated from Drone (VSH stock lineage) then 'Mongrel' Drone Congreation random Mating doesn't occur. 🤔

Aleksandar here from Bulgaria, Europe. I have been following your channel with a pleasure and learning quite a lot from it! Our Beekeeping differs in many aspects compared to yours in US.
Let's say that there is not much innovation coming along or at least that's my opinion based on my, not that big experience with bees...
Since I am using only mediums (including for brood nest), may I setup a starter in 10 or 8 frames medium? My logic here is that they could keep warmer conditions due to the smaller space compared to Langstroth? I am planning to raise not more than 10 queens in two series (five each), so I will be using it also for finisher.

Would it be possible to add a frame of capped brood back to your starter hive in the time between frames of queen cells, to replenish the numbers of nurse bees of the proper age?
Sure, the problem is that not all the bees in the starter hive then would be nurse bee age. Only the ones emerging from your capped frame of brood in 6 days. And those nurse bees would only be able to produce ample amounts of royal jelly IF they are well fed which might be questionable in a starter hive.
I would replenish more Nurse Bees (not loyal, so don't fight) by Brushing Bees generally (not Queen !) Into a big Deep Tote ! All the Field Bees fly back to the Hive they came from. All those left at the bottom are : Nurse Bees ! 🥳
Gently tap Tote corner, get Bees in one place and tip these into that Starter Hive.
Simples. 😎

I was thinking what you said about the queen pheromones taking at least a week to leave the hive. Shouldn't we wait that week before trying to introduce a new queen to make the colony more open to accepting her before we add her to it?
I do not remember saying a week, if I did I misspoke. Usually a large hive detects the lack of the queen’s pheromones less than 24 hours throughout the hive.

Hey David, Im loving the videos. Just to confirm. For every queen cell you make you will need a mating nuc for them, correct? so if you make 5 queen cells, 5 mating nucs?
Correct unless you place them in queenless splits, nucs or hives.

The longer you are established with a company website presence and reputation, you'll have more orders than you can fill. But, it is tough starting out just like with any new business.
How do you drop a queen cell into a hive? How do you secure it?
That's a good question I'll answer on my next video George.
You cut it carefully from the Comb where its located : give it a good border of Spare Wax (as a barrier of protection : no error in dinging it, or it getting Mashed.)
Place it so Queen Cell points Downwards like a Peanut ! Some use half a tooth pic, gently piercing that Wax above the Cell itself.
Take an outer Frame out, move each other frame until the two in centre position.
Carefully place Queen Cell against that Comb face ( can use above, or a bit of finger pressure to weld (QC) Wax area to set it on that Comb. Then carefully move the next inner Frame against its other side. Bees will also repair 'Wax' as one Structure ! Then add back those other Frames.
Tip :
If you make own Queen Cups. Make them so they can be glued (with hot Wax) onto say Small Tiles (like those in a Scrabble game*.) Think it's Uni of Guelph YT Bee Channel... that do this. So when placed between Frames, those 'Tiles' get pressed into both Frames : but Queen Cell just hangs down in the gap safely. Genius really ! Just need to find an eg Balsalwood (Fruit) Crate*, and make yourself umpteen Tiles ! Just need Scissors and time, this wood is thin, easy to cut, but strong enough to hold a Queen Cell (DIY Q Cup.) 😎
