I thought I knew a lot about music, especially of SJ, Salilda and OP. But when I had the fortune to meet the great Sebastian in Goa (1991 December), there were so many new things and revelations that I felt like an ignoramus. He was actually taking an afternoon nap and his son told me to come after 2 hours. He asked me “who shall I say had come?”, I said just say a fan of Shankar Jaikishan. The son went and Sebastian himself came out. He heard the words Shankar Jaikishan. That was enough for him. We spoke for 2-½ hours. He told me about the intricacies of arrangement and his own contribution in the songs. He helped the various composers by even composing intro music and interludes. And the counter melody, of course. He told me how both L-P had worked under him, but Pyarelal’s was the one who used to keenly observe what Sebastian was doing. He said his biggest and most satisfying work was for SJ because they gave him a free hand, from Shri 420 onwards.
Thank you so much for making this video about the most wonderful arranger of probably all times, Sebastian D’Souza, a quiet and modest individual who was literally the architect behind most of Shankar Jaikishan’s music including superb background music.. He was also the leading arranger for OP Naiyyar as well.
Really obliged to you Sir for uncovering hidden gems like Sebastian, Dattaram and delving deep into the spine of evergreen melodies that have kept us entertained forever. This is 24 k gold . and worth preserving forever. Melody will never die like truth. It shall prevail always🎉 please enlighten us more with information about more hidden stars of yore. We are thirsting for more.❤
