However, politically the situation was tense, with conservative Mexicans initially supporting the Empire and Republicans opposing it. Then Maximilian started implementing liberal policies, loosing conservative support, then the American civil war came to an end and Americans got involved, supporting the Republic and seeing the Franco-austrian intervention as a violation of the Monroe Doctrine. France decided that it wasn't worth severely damaging its relations with the USA, and stopped supporting Maximilian, who got tried and executed by the restored Republican government, poor guy...

I live in France, and this might be the most popular junk food among certain French youth, those things are calorie bombs, so yes they are cheap and they fill you up, and in most cases you won't be able to finish just one, so yes you are getting a bang for your buck, but you are almost guaranteed to end up in the hospital with a severe pancreatic crisis (happened to me and I spent 14h in the hospital) because your body just can't take that much saturated fat in a single sandwich, I mean you can bash the Americans how much you want on how fat and greasy some of their foods are, but the greasiest quadruple bypass burger from the Heart Attack Grill is like having a healthy organic salad compared to a French Taco, don't take the risk guys.

You don't know typical American food either.
Edit: this "tacos" is exactly the same sort of thing popular with American youths, no better no worse. The rest of us, however, would ATTEMPT to eat a bit better though we struggle with cheap calories and high cost of living.
Even still, travel to the US and try our non-fast food restaurants before you judge.

This place is called O'Tacos, they sell california burritos with French/Algerian sauces and their loyal patrons rave review is that a taco isn't a burger...
If it tastes good that's dope, I'd eat one, but that's a French take on a Cali burrito son. I'm slowly starting to understand why Italian people get mad when others bastardize their food. It's not that they're upset at the creativity...they're annoyed by them mis-labelling things. If they called this a French Cali Burrito it would make perfect sense.

I’ve tried them and while they’re objectively not terrible food , they are absolutely not even in the same category of excellence as an honest-to-goodness Mexican taco (or even… RESEMBLING tacos, but… I digress ).
Why does everyone try to make their own subpar ‘joke’ version of tacos? …There are so many ACTUAL Mexicans who would love to set up shop in your country/city, if you just gave them a chance.
their homegrown food (assuming they don’t dumb it down for the locals) is …spectacular.

In the Diccionario de Mejicanismos (Mexicanismos) of 1895, defines the Burrito as:
"Rolled tortilla, with meat or other food inside, which in Yucatán they call codzito, and in Cuernavaca and Mexico, taco."
And there's more information, like the legend of Juan Méndez, who transported the food in a donkey (burrito).

When I stayed in the 17th arrondisement of Paris, I came across many local shops selling kebabs and these kids of tacos. As a Mexican, I'm not offended, if anything flattered that the French have incorporated and adapted it to fit their palate. With a huge population from Algeria, Tunisia and more, I understand the concept. I would've tried one, but all the shops were closed on that day.
