I’m one of those that only play 1-5 games a year. Not because I don’t want to play more, I just lack the time. I don’t have gamepass because I might as well just buy a game or play something in my backlog.
Me too, access to hundreds of games never appealed to me because there's not enough time to play em & I'm only into 4-5 game genres, I don't like 1st person games, I don't like live service or sports games. Similar to u I only buy 4 - 5 games a years & depending on how much I value a game I may buy deluxe physical versions & for the others that are less of a priority I'll wait for a retail sale.

This is true. But you will never make mass success by strictly appealing to tryhards/hardcore. I play fighting games and there is a big push again for a better casual experience. Most gamers aren’t playing 1000 hours per year. I put in almost 600 hours across 20 plus games on my PS5 (2024). I can buy 20 plus games a year with no problem (a good portion aren’t at launch) but I don’t have time to finish them. It took me over a year to beat RE 4 remake because I kept stopping to play another game I liked. There is a reason why most gamers buy 4-5 games per year. This doesn’t include life services games which is another time sink.
We already know it's the best deal in gaming. But does that translate as financial growth? Not really when you consider Microsoft has spent upwards of $80 billion on acquisitions. If you're putting all the content into a monthly service you need to increase the price or sell the games in more places. And they're doing both.
Having gamepass and PS plus caused me to have a backlog. With my gamepass and PS plus now expired, it's the best thing that happened to me. For have GTA6, Kingdom Come 2, Ghost of Yotei and Mafia old country that are my most anticipated. Playing 2 or 4 games a year is perfect, and you end up with less backlog. People who try to play every game end up rushing them or end up not finishing most games.
There is one other crucial difference between Netflix and Game Pass (speaking of PC Game Pass). Namely, a Netflix show will always operate correctly on your device (TV). But as we know, unfortunately a video game sometimes is either poorly optimised or has high system requirements. The latter is more of a problem for PC players, while console players are safe in this regard. But the former, the poor optimisation, is an issue which plagues many new game releases (I could give a dozen examples, Cyberpunk 2077 being the most prominent one). Now what can one do in order to spend one's money wisely on new video games? AAA titles are now in the range of $60-$70, so not very cheap. There is of course always the possibility to wait and see how a game gets reviewed to get information about its performance on different devices. Or browse the technical forums after its release. But here is where Game Pass sets in as another option, because if you play given game on Game Pass and find out that it doesn't run optimal on your device you did not waste your money on that particular game. So it is a very consumer friendly option for testing games on own hardware, and one can use it on a monthly basis.

Gotta say I disagree with you. And there’s a lot to look at here. So yes people generally play a few games a year and the most played game is call of duty. And we know that cod helped get millions of subs when it came out. Now we don’t know how many have stayed but we do know that the game helped break records. Furthermore xbox has a constant stream of cash flowing in that gives them billions of dollars a year without even relying on sales and When we see games not sale well like final fantasy. They would of been better releasing in game pass and becoming apart of a bigger ecosystem. Gamepass does well financially. Calculate the numbers yourself. If it wasn’t you think they wouldn’t of pulled the plug earlier. Nine of us know how to run billion dollar corporations. But we all know that if something isn’t a success big companies will pull the plug. And people have been saying this for years. People running Microsoft and Xbox aren’t dumb.
A starting difference maker would be the handheld PCs, if you made Gamepass Steamdeck or ROG ally, not just compatible, but easy in both MS and Steam OS UIs, you would see an increase in demand, as a lot of the indie studios who have had big success with Gamepass have titles suited to the steam deck or equivalent. I think this will come with an all singing XBOX handheld on the horizon, but will the bubble have burst by that point on these devices? Or will the MS OS not be good enough in comparison to SteamOS? It has to be convenient. Nintendo and Valve I see as a potential partner but not if you’re going into competition with them with your own handheld its going to put barriers up

For me, it doesn't make sense to get Game Pass. Especially when I have a huge back log to play and rarely buy/play AAA games the year they come out. I'm still playing Monster Hunter Rise😂. Also Humble Bundle with that 7 games for 12 bucks deals is almost unbeatable and cheaper in the long run.
