Jihad is done as Rasulullah shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam and his companions Radhiallahu anhu/anha exemplify as in the battle of uhud, battle of badr and other battle.
The jihad must be done at the right place and time like jihad defending the country from the Colonial as did our predecessors in Indonesia.
Btw, Jihad there are many kinds, not merely battle :)

UtechS, The explanation of Ibn al-Qayyim, the type of jihad viewed from the object:
(1) jihad to combat lust,
(2) jihad to combat satan,
(3) jihad to fight infidels
(4) jihad to fight the hypocrites.
But in further information Ibn al-Qayyim adds to the jihad against the zhalim, bid'ah and munkar.
Jihad can be done with heart, speech, treasure and soul. One example by preaching and supporting da'wah and deny their invitation that tend to mislead from the way of Allah :)
In understanding the verses of the Qur'an should not be arbitrary, all the understanding must be in accordance with the Messenger of Allah. For that required interpretation of the Qur'an and one of them from ibn Kathir.
From what I understand, the verse (Surah At-Tawbah Verse 29) above relates to the previous verse that is Surah At-Tawbah Verse 28. This verses explains the prohibition of the polytheists entering the Masjid al-Haram.
Surah At-Tawbah Verse 28
O you who have believed, indeed the polytheists are unclean(#), so let them not approach al-Masjid al-Haram(**) after this, their [final] year(^^). And if you fear privation, Allah will enrich you from His bounty if He wills. Indeed, Allah is Knowing and Wise.
Explanation :
# Unclean in aqidah and charity. Tawheed and faith are holiness, while shirk is unclean. Their aqidah is shirk, while their deeds are against God, deter man from the way of Allah, defend the vanity, reject the right, do damage on earth and not fix it. Therefore, you should clean the noblest house on earth from them (the polytheists).
** The polytheists should not enter the land of Haram either for the purposes of Hajj and Umrah or for other purposes.
^^ It means after the 9th year of Hijrah, when Abu Bakr led the Muslim hajj, and at that time the Prophet sallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam sent Ali bin Abi Talib to recite the verse "bara'ah" on the day of the great hajj, he was also ordered to call that " The polytheists should not be hajj after this year, and should not tawaf while naked."
Surah At-Tawbah Verse 29
Fight those who do not believe in Allah or in the Last Day and who do not consider unlawful what Allah and His Messenger(^^) have made unlawful and who do not adopt the religion of truth(**) from those who were given the Scripture - [fight] until they give the jizyah(##) willingly while they are humbled.
Explanation :
^^ This verse commands to fight Jews and Christians at that time, at the time of the Messenger of Allah (not necessarily by battle). They do not follow his own shari'ah in forbidden such haram things, they justify khamr or liquor.
** Their religion has been changed (broken) and did not want to accept Islam as a perfecting religion from the teachings of the previous prophet (Prophet Moses alaihissalam and Prophet Jesus/Isa alaihissalam).
## Jizyah is a tax paid by unbelievers who live in an Islamic state (kafir adz-dhimmi). The taxes are taken from them every year according to circumstances; rich, poor, or middle-ranking as Amir al-mu'minin Umar bin Khaththab and others did.

I just realized that Islam not only binds a Muslim to obedience but also to non-Muslims though. They inevitably have to obey, loss in the world and the hereafter while being a muslim get luck in the world and the hereafter.
I am a Hindu but I everyday listen to quranic verses especially surah rahman, mulk,yaseen.
I suggest if you are really devoted, try converting one day! The nature of Islam makes it easy on the believer, it is not that hard to be a believer (if you ignore shaytan) I am saying this because we are very welcoming and Allah will accept the deed you do once you look to him. As far as we are aware, no one "knows" the future, so the notion 'obviously we will be tortured in the hell fire' is absurd; as no one knows. Similarly, again we don't know the percentage, so making one up is naive. The Prophet Pbuh was effectively a messenger with numerous skills and qualities; not a warlord. Qur'an is in the Arabic language 1) If your revealing a book to people it's best to do it in the language they understand; common sense no? 2) Arabic is naturally a very rich language, when the Qur'an is translated into another language alot of the meaning is lost, hence if anyone wanting to understand the Qur'an, it is highly recommended they learn traditional Arabic first. The Qur'an contains alot more passages that are of forgiveness and loving thy neighbour than narration of war stories (it's a fact, read all 114 Chapters for proof). What is contained in the Qur'an is of use to everyone around the world and it does stand the rest of time, e.g. it contains many scientific facts that were only discovered in last century or few years even. If it was meant just for the middle east, imagine people living in a dessert (where water is scarce), being told 1400 years ago, "Have those who disbelieved not considered that the heavens and the earth were a joined entity, and We separated them and made from water every living thing? Then will they not believe?" (21:30) < Every living thing is made out of water.
