    Take away our history -
    Take away our heroes -
    Take away our values -
    And leave us here with nothing -
    We were in the garden of Eden -
    Just as children mess around -
    We only leant against the tree -
    And the apple came tumbling down -
    You gave us what we asked for -
    But never what we wanted -
    We were only children How could you have been so stupid - We went up to the steel walls - That guard the sacred town - We only whispered to ourselves - And the walls came tumbling down - We didn't want a victory - We just wanted to fight - But you wouldn't fight - You just gave in - You went and spoiled every game - You broke an everlasting chain - And nobody respects you for your weakness - Take away our idols - Take away our faith - Take away our hatred - And put us in this vacuum - Then say be yourself, please yourself - Express yourself some more It's your right to do what you like - Because we can't really be bothered with you at all - We didn't want a victory - We just wanted to fight - But you wouldn't fight - You said it isn't nice to fight - You went and spoiled every game - You broke an everlasting chain - And nobody respects you for your weakness ....

    I agree, it is a conservative song- but conservative with a small 'c'. It's definitely against the whole thuggish Tory government that we endured between 78 and 97. I still maintain that the best thinkers have been on the side of a kind of enlightened socialism. Great song, though :)

    the best of nma, each song speaking clearly for those who will listen, but listen the songs say something different to each of us, making it brilliant even more.

    i could be completely missing the point here, but isn't the song about the effects of post-colonisation? how colonisation starts off by taking away a country's identity and exploiting them, giving them a european education to try and control them, but because this kind of education involves a lot of egalitarian values, everyone pretty much used these ideas against them. and after the war, the colonies jumped ship and evaded responsibility, leaving all of those countries to go into civil war.

      ribqueen I think that this song might be interpreted at different levels. I personally think that this song is quite literally a critique of the liberal education...

    • @JustLikeHeaven77
      @JustLikeHeaven77 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's a good interpretation. I like it, but I think it more of a song about making excuses to god about wrong doings. More so, making excuses to authority about wrong doings.
      Like the first verse.
      Obviously about Adam and Eve with the apple.
      Second verse is either the walls of Jericho or the tower of babel.
      Third verse is a little more intricate. It's possibly about exodus and numbers. Freeing the Jews from Egypt, but then sending them into the desert for 40 years. Then the Jews rejected GOD when they begged him for food and all they got was Mana.
      The chorus is about getting what you want but not being happy with the outcome.
      "We didn't want a victory, we just wanted to fight."
      The ones that are happy.
      "You went and spoiled every game, you broke an ever lasting chain."
      LoL.
      All this coming from someone who doesn't believe in GOD.

      @mouradsabri4869 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      TheLexyboy this song is against liberal relativism, which borders on nihilism. But New Model Army are neither conservative, nor liberal.

    • @arnoldhau1
      @arnoldhau1 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mouradsabri4869 No they clearly are and have always been on the left, so they are definilty neither liberal nor conservative. I guess the song "lurhstaap" does answer that question quite clearly.
