GOTTA BE ALERT ON A STREET CIRCUIT! The Story of the Monaco Street Circuit

  • Last week, I did a video on the tracks that never changed their layouts, and a lot of people named Monaco as one of them, assuming it had never changed due to it being a street circuit.
    But amazingly, it has. Most of it looks familiar, but the end section is where all the changes happened, but it's always interesting to see how F1's most glamorous and most famous venue came to be the venue it is today.
    Enjoy! And remember to like and subscribe for more!
    Thanks to the guys at www.racingcircuits.info for the use of the track maps!

    I read somewhere that the drivers are racing more "against" the track than between themselves. With the quasi impossibility of overtaking, that's why the qualifying is super impressive and the race so depressing. And seeing the F1 chonkers we got this year, I don't think it's going to change much, except if Pirelli finds a way to make drivers pit 2 or 3 times.

    • @thestibblr6637
      @thestibblr6637 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Well, we saw in Bahrain how quickly the tyres degraded, and they use a step softer in Monaco IIRC

    • @jsquared1013
      @jsquared1013 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@thestibblr6637 part of the reason for the degradation in Bahrain was the unusually colder temps (Pirelli brought the hardest compounds). The new tires don't grain up as much as the old ones, but it's the same issue that the colder temps mean the tires aren't quite "in the window" as much and thus wear out faster. And the Bahrain track surface is quite aggressive.

    • @AnIdiotAboard_
      @AnIdiotAboard_ 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The first 2 races of the year, were a 2/3 stop race, depending on the team. Pirelli NAILED their mandate so far, and tires will always degrade but you can see now there on it lap after lap, we've also learned the tires don't respond to being protected.
      Pirelli's mandate was 18" RIMs. 75 Miles on the hard down to 55 on the supers ( Do the math at just over half the circuits its a 2 stop race, with a good smattering of 3 stoppers, and a possible 1 stop come Austin which will be all front end limmited) So Pirelli nailed it so far, so long as nothing explodes this year and there are no major problems, well be off this topic of Pirelli producing exactly what there contracted to produce and for us to bash in complete ignorance. Okay the FIA didnt add exploding to the requirements that's all on Pirelli but the rest, you should be bitching at the FIA .
      As for we saw in Bahrain how quickly the degraded, now that's not true either, look at the times drivers spent ENTIRE STINTS within a half-second lap time wise, the tires WORE OUT and do so in a predictable way so the drivers can push on lap after lap after lap. The cars are now ALL front limmited so the rears are these days highly protected

    Even though fighting on track is basically impossible, I find it much more boring to watch the cars on other tracks, like Silverstone for example. Not so much more (non-crash) fighting, but these modern boats look much more spectacular when they blast through Rivage or Tabac up to Rascasse.
    I assume it’s going to look less spectacular with 2022’s porpoises having to stay extra far away from curbs xD

    Surprised people think Monaco is the same as ever. It has changed several times in my time - this is my 24th full season. The biggest change in my time is the current pits complex and the accompanying extension of the entry into La Rascasse. Urban development in any city would see the roads change, as well. But then again, I'm a nerd, so I would know the history of things I like that closely. Monaco being so narrow, dangerous and unsuited to modern cars, plus the excess of wealth makes it very off putting for me, so it's not in my favourites list. I didn't miss it at all in 2020. I'm terrible at it in the games, which I put down to a mental block, preferring wider spaces to let rip with the car. Singapore and Baku are my preferred street circuits. I was disappointed to see Formula E switch to use the full circuit. The layout where what F1 viewers know as a service road became a downhill straight into a hairpin provided plenty of overtaking and made the series unique, I really liked it and want to run it on some platform or another. It made me like Monaco, that's how good it was! I'll miss it.

    1982. Rain in the last few laps. Prost stuffing his Renault out of the chicane, Pironi's Ferrari sputtering out of fuel in the tunnel, Derek Daly's Williams missing a rear wing, and Riccardo Patrese spinning at the Leows Hairpin yet ending up as the winner.
    That's why I pray for it to piss down at Monaco come race time.

Odd it is now the first race of the year, a race at one or two tracks used to happen in California from sometime in the 1960's or early 1970's until the almost end 1980's until these tracks got either shut down or NASCAR moved from the track.

      The people who own the track over the years have only made track a bit wider with more catch fences/safety barriers all for safety, added more pit lanes for bigger depth races, and made the aging tunnel for cars to enter the track wider when needed in either 2006 or 2016. This from a track made in 1955 so almost 67 years old.
      The longest running pro series is SCCA Formula 500 Indy cars then CART/Indy Car running as Formula 500 from 1968 to 1976 until Indy and SCCA split and then CART from 1982 to 1998 when Indy Car Racing League took the name from its main race when it split CART running as its own league from 1998 onward as the Series that won the CART/Indy split from 1998 to 2005.

      Then it's only interesting if people get out of position, there's still no overtaking hardly. Danny Ric won the race despite having a massive power loss because nobody could still get by him even if their cars were functioning perfectly.
      I remember another year when Hammy won thanks to a penalty to Verstappen with Vettel just sitting in third not doing anything because he knew there was no point, and was simply hoping the mad one took out the Hamster.

    Monoco is the least entertaining track on the calendar for F1. I wouldn't be disappointed if it was removed from the calendar.
    Great track for FE but not so good for F1.

    Monaco especially, but so many tracks are essentially wasted by having today’s cars race on them. Formula 1 gives us amazing machines & astounding ways of utilizing technology. But with that, Formula 1 also gives us horrible racing.
    Perhaps they should market the Grands Prix as ‘A number of parade laps at speed with the tantalizing possibility of collisions’?… because that’s what the product is. Especially in the example of Monaco.
    (Sorry, Charles… I know it’s your hometown)
    Sorry, almost every other driver… I know it’s your tax avoidance hideout)

      Well said. Some tracks are brilliant, just not brilliant for F1. The Monaco street circuit has become that.
      I wouldn’t be at all sorry if the Monaco Grand Prix became like Macau’s; not part of the F1 championship, and run with cars more suited to the course. In fact, I’d be happy with the Formula E event becoming the Monaco Grand Prix. Its prestige might lead to F1 drivers being tempted to do it as a one-off - especially where their team has links to one in Formula E (Mercedes, Andretti if they join F1, etc.). Knowing F1’s “only show in town” attitude they’d no doubt deliberately schedule a replacement race on the same day though.
      F1 has literally outgrown Monaco. Time for Monaco to take back a bit of control of its own race and bring a bit of racing/entertainment into it again?
