  • In 1998, the world premiere version of the Disney/Elton John/Tim Rice "Aida" musical was presented at Atlanta, Georgia's Alliance Theater, under the title "Elaborate Lives: The Legend of Aida." When it finally made it to Broadway in 2000 under the title "Aida," it had a wholly new staging and physical production, plus a different leading man. Here are Heather Headley, Hank Stratton and Sherie Rene Scott in the Atlanta version, including some material that didn't make it to Broadway ("Our Nation Holds Sway," "The Messenger"). The pyramid set design in Atlanta only worked some of the time; it is working here.

    1) That is not at all what I had imagined the pyramid to look like.
    2) I'm kind of glad that Heather was given a longer wig.
    3) Sherie Rene Scott
    4) Can we talk about how many changes this show has gone through? I don't think I've ever seen writers work/change a show this much during its out of town tryouts phase

      True indeed--this show underwent a massive overhaul between 1998 and B'way 2000.

My One and Only and Kiss of the Spider Woman (if we count the Purchase original) went through similar complete overhauls, but yeah not too many others...

I can imagine the reasons why they needed to change all of this. Broadway version works better in my opinion, but it is fascinating to see this original version and to valorate the evolution of the show. Thanks for share it, a priceless material for the fans of the show!!

Wow. It's so rare to see this before Aida made it's Broadway debut. They have really changed the musical a lot during the process. This look so different compare to the Broadway version. This version has more Egyptian culture, but the Broadway version made it more colorful with Disney style and still have the concepts and elements of Egyptian culture. Now I want to see full musical of this Atlanta version and there's another revise version performance in Chicago before Aida hits on Broadway.

I love this show...and seeing what is was before it transferred....what a difference. So bland...happy for the rewrites.

Thanks for sharing this!! I saw the second to last performance of this show in Atlanta. I walked away thinking that Heather and Sherie Rene were amazing...and that some of the songs were utter perfection...but the rest was a mess. The pyramid worked perfectly at the show I saw. I also got to meet Heather that afternoon.

Thank you. I saw the show on BWAY with Taylor Dayne and the 2 other original leads when I was very young but I was always curious about what the pyramid looked like. It is a little underwhelming now that I see it.

Thanks a million for posting this! This was by far my favorite project. Amazing cast, crew, venue, and experience. I wish I could see more video and show my family what I've been babbling about all these years. Thanks again! If you have more video, I'd love to see it.

@@daniellemckenna3559 I was a software engineer at Disney Imagineering. I did the pyramid's control software. It was an insane project of 18-30 hour days for months in Los Angeles and Atlanta--and great fun. The cast and crew were wonderful people. I would love to get a video of the entire show (preferably one where the pyramids hydraulic pump didn't take a dump all over the stage). Nobody who worked on the show seems to have one.

Just so you know, someone made a mini-documentary about Aida and they briefly mention the pyramid and it’s difficulties. You can watch it if you like!

Oh wow... just randomly stumbled on this!!! I've always wondered how that pyramid "worked." I could never visualize it. This show really was completely overhauled for Broadway - and for the better. Though, I think "Messenger" could have worked with better lyrics and arrangement.
