Some great advice here!! We have been guilty of giving our conure Kiwi way too much freedom and attention. I work from home so she's been pretty spoiled. We always feel kind of guilty when she's locked up in her cage. She's got a beautiful large cage full of toys and different perches, so we need to stop thinking of it as a negative when shes in her safe place. I never thought having a bird would change our life as much as she has done. Its mostly great, but I think we need to help her to be a little more independent. I love this conversation.
I wouldn’t go so far as to say lots of freedom and attention is bad! It’s more than being able to self entertain and to be ok in their own space when needed!
Great interview David and Sandra, I always learn something new from you both. May I add that my two parrolettes know my dust buster ( small vacuum cleaner) well. They have no fear when I try to keep up with clean ups😅😅
@@susannemichelsen8879 hi! Yes parrolettes are so adorable 😍 both are males , one is a sky blue color and the other is an emerald green. 2 years apart in age and they are quite intelligent. I do have many pics, I'll have to try to add their picture on to my TH-cam avatar. There's no option to add pics to comment section here. Thanks for your interest 🙂 I was able to put their photos on my profile picture (avatar), thanks for giving me this idea.
I am like Sandra! I have a solo bird! My Sun is 20 years old. I actually enjoy having a solo for almost two decades I had my Sun and her bestie, which was a female Quaker. Unfortunately my Quaker passed away last year due to illness. I was worried how Sunny would do as a solo bird but she is thriving!! I have tons of great memories of the two of them. They always had each other and the three of us would have a blast. However I find I enjoy having a solo bird because I like having that constant one on one time. Sunny loves also getting ALL the attention too.
There’s no such thing as giving too much of freedom to a bird. When you have a cat or a dog roaming around your home 24/7. No one says they have too much freedom so why do we say that about birds? Personally I think if there’s anything that is too much given of it would definitely be our attention because it’s a solo bird or something. Birds like any other animal or human need to be able to entertain themselves. The idea is not to make them see us as the entertainment source but rather a flock member who happens to fly in once in awhile and provide food and fresh water as well as company and play games with. Birds aren’t meant to be caged, they are meant to fly around, be engaged with and inclusion is a must as it’s a flock mentality. We humans have to sort of become birds when we own one or more.
I’d definitely agree with some elements of what you said. My revision would be you can never give your bird enough choice!! It’s also much about making the bird room or cage space somewhere that’s amazing to be in when they need to be in there! Rather than seeing it as a place to just dump the bird when they are inconvenient! Some people have their birds out 24/7 and they have a worse quality of life than birds who only come out for a few hours!! I’d also agree that a bird needs to be able to self entertain and that we are part of the flock not just providers! It’s a valid point! It’s great to provide them choice in the environment so they can enjoy it both inside and outside of the cage and engage in lots of fulfilling activity!
@@TheParrotTeacher birds that are left out 24/7 but very little interaction to none, nothing to play with ect is indeed not cool. That I couldn’t agree more. My birds have cages they couldn’t care less about. lol their fun is outside the cages though they have plenty to play with in and out but prefer being out. They have a whole room to themselves. I work from home so it works for me to let them free but I do understand those who don’t work from home can’t do that or else the home would look like a war zone. lol
Thank you so much for having me on David! Great chat about conures😀🥳
Any time! It was a pleasure!
I love both of you guys! I have a parrot group on TH-cam and recommend your channels all the time. Thank you for all your work!
