Hey Larry, thanks for this video. I'm glad I found it as I was resetting up my DecoderPro and was having issues with getting the roster back in place. I was also a bit confused on how to back them up a swell. Thanks!
Excellent video Larry, glad to see the camera issue was solved. Again learned a lot about decoder pro. I agree, once you get that info placed into the program, who wants to re-do it. Thanks for sharing. Ken
Yes, fixing the camera issue lightened my wallet considerably, and I still have the cost of getting the old one repaired. Moneytization will hopefully help pay for that!
Larry, one minor note of caution -- drag and drop will only copy a file or directory when the target drive is different. If the user drags and drops the Roster directory to the same drive, the directory will MOVE ! For example, dragging from C:\Layout\JMRI\Roster and dropping in C:\Layout\JMRI\Backup will result in the directory moving to C:\Layout\JMRI\Backup - not what was expected ! (painful lesson learned here ;-) ) So, I would recommend explicitly copying the directory and pasting to the backup destination regardless of drive location. This will ensure no surprises. Thank you for your videos - Keep them coming!
Paul, thanks for that warning for folks. As I said in the video it is important to put the backup copy onto some form of removable media and not leave it on the same computer. I copy the entire roster directory to a thumb drive and to Google Drive giving me double the protection.
Larry, your timing is perfect! I am just in the process of trying to shift my roster from my wife's laptop onto my newly-revamped desktop pc and was wondering how to do it...then this popped into the inbox!
What about merging roster files? I have one on my laptop and one on my Raspberry pi. I know they both have duplicate entries, but there are some on both that are not on either. Also I am in the process of setting up Decoder Pro on a dedicated PC for the train room, that way besides myself, a few of us in our "club" can use the PC to do programming, and we would like to have a "master" roster for the layout.
I have never seen anything about merging rosters so let me take another look at that. You can basically tag individual locos to be in different groups and I think that allows you to choose which group is visible. That way each member could have their own roster within the main one. You also can set up duplicate “layouts” to create individual rosters for each. Once I have a chance to dig into this stuff I’ll add another video on that.
@@TheDCCGuy Larry, I'm going to look inside the "roster" folder. If each locomotive is a separate .xml file, then I would be able to copy each one into the folder and that should merge them together. I will then backup the entire folder and copy it to the layout PC.
Great Ideas Larry thanks for sharing. I was wondering about this. Is it possible to do the same thing with the turnouts tables and the panels i have created?
I haven’t gotten into that part of JMRI yet. I have a friend who created panels for his layout and then couldn’t find a way to export them when he wanted to print out a copy. You might ask that on the JMRI forum on Groups.io.
Are you located in NC? I live between Charlotte and Lexington. I'm an avid Southern Railroad fan and my layout will be of Southern Railroad. I'm curious to find other Southern Railroad modelers close by. Thanks for providing all the great information that you do. 👍
why does JMRI create a roster/roster folder? why the dup's??? Driving me crazy!!! C:\JMRI\My_JMRI_Railroad oster oster\ And what is with all the *.BAK files.... I must have 20 different profile files... do you?
I have never understood the file structure of JMRI, it looks like something designed by a committee. I just save the roster files as needed to back them up, ignore the rest of it, and rejoice in the fact that it all works.

Thanks for the video, I was stuck on the roster not showing up after a new install. The recreate roster index was what I have been missing.

Hope everything works out. But in the end, you have a backup camera now. Thanks again. Ken

Yes, I am near Asheville. Have you seen the model railroad layout at the old depot in Hendersonville? Lots of Southern modelers here in NC.

it doesn't. That just happens to be Larry's particular setup.
