The game just feels so nice once I get the Iron breakers. The world just feels right as they hold off the world while I start making critical mistake after critical mistake with all my other units.
After Lizardmen, Dwarfs are my favourite faction in this game. Although I dislike corner camping, with dwarfs I really didn't know any other way to avoid getting flanked. Just today, I had to play out of my skin to fend off 4 full stacks of greenskins led by Wurrzag, using a single army of long beards, quarrelers, and 3x iron drakes and grudge throwers, led by Thorgrim. In overstretched line formation in the corner in an underway battle (VH/N). The iron drakes carried the day for me. I never seem to have enough melee infantry to cover all my amazing missiles and artillery. That got me thinking - "surely, there are better formations to play as the dwarfs, especially with organ guns and iron breakers now ready to be unleashed?" That's what led me to your video today. Amazing guide - I have over 2k hours in WH2 and 3 combined and I was playing the dwarfs wrong all this time! You have opened my eyes! Hats off to you sir, take my like and subscription. I look forward to checking out your other videos.
Thanks for your detailed comment. There's many ways to find success in this game and far more freedom on the harder difficulties than the internet would have you believe. Everything in my vids is tested on L/VH and are have been crafted to be easy to use and not overly exposed to a single weakness so even if someone disagrees, I'll always listen to their points (I may learn something) but I can always say what is shown I've found strong success with on the hardest difficulty, so at least it's honest advice. Ironbreakers and Irondrakes are probably my 2 fav units so it was great fun making these. I try to roleplay and avoid cheese in my campaigns so I'm quite committed to making things work in an immersive way that proves you don't need cheese, even on the higher difficulties. If you want to cheese, then hopefully this will help you really hit the limits and I wish anyone fun in doing so. I never stop learning in this game, part of the appeal. Thanks mate, one reason I started this channel is the ridiculous amount of info out there that isn't supported by streams, demonstrations or anything else. There's a lot of info out there that's correct, but only in context, and other that is straight up harmful to your play lol. I welcome bit of criticism and critique as it's a great chance to learn and expand your thinking, but I've made it a goal to be able to at least have demonstration on legendary to show my perspective is backed by something I myself can perform to the degree I claim. Appreciate the support!

great guide, i was really struggling at with the dwarfs using straight lines all that followed ur guide and starting winning a lot more battles thanks man
I'd always considered the flame canon superior to the standard irondrakes, due to being able to pinpoint melee blobs after the lines engage plus their range can deliver their shots almost anywhere instantly. Yet as you showed, flanks are a critical factor as the Dwarfs, due to their tendency to get enveloped. Furthermore, a hero frontline can mitigate much of the direct line of sight issues most other high-end ranged units and artillery have. Besides, flame canons are ridiculously expensive, and an important aspect of Total War is doing less with more.

I love the flavor of the dwarves, but ive struggled for years with feild battle strategy. your tactical cube for thorgrim might have just changed the way I play
Just started playing again and first time as dwarf properly and ya that last army is what I came up with as well haha it just doesn’t fail auto says I’ll die and I wipe the floor with them haha 8x iron breaker 2x iron drakes 3x flamers 2x organs and then throw what ya want in and it’s gg
I definitely think quite a few things have changed since this video. I do still like a very similar army for Grombrindal but I run 2 Grudgesettler Flame Cannons since they are easy to get and I just go all in on fire for him with 2 Brimstone Gyrocopters as well as 2 Grudgesettler Irondrakes for the fire debuff. I also think the Grudgerakers are quite good. Thorgrim Army I get the Gyrobomber and Organ Guns but replace 2 Ironbreakers with Hammerers. All the other characters I have very different armies.
Haha that'd help for sure, that said, it's often handy to be able to explain then demonstrate in the same take. Not having archers in melee is certainly nice though haha
Something I would have liked to see near the end was the Gyrobomber dealing with some long range artillery (I used to take a pair of cannons as a counter battery until I realized a single gyro unit could do an even more reliable job).
Having a gyrobomber is fun as well as effective at filling that cavalry void, as you rightly pointed out! I believe in the Belegar build I used a gyro to hunt down artillery, but I guess the demonstration could have been longer. Cheers for the input!
Really cool formations, gonna try some of these out. Starting a new dwarf campaign. Gonna try a rangers and slayer army for ungrim once I confederate. See if you can actually play mobility dwarfs.
I would have appreciated a few tips for thane, engineers, and runesmith builds. There are some interesting options, but I never really know what's viable. Like when would I want a fire thane over a tank thane?
Cheers for the feedback. The most essential elements of each hero are touched on in the mastery guide (th-cam.com/video/-6830eblBHM/w-d-xo.html). Most characters have a core of what makes them excellent with some playstyle tweaks on the periphery. All heroes should max their Melee Defence, HP and defensive stats if possible, at some point before boosting offence as they get hit many more times than they will attack. In addition to this, Runesmiths typically operate with Wrath and Ruin alternating with another rune appropriate to the battle while Engineers typically want to bolster the output of your best missile weapons (Ballistics Calibration, etc). Hope that helps!
What the hell? For hundreds of hours across 3 games i've been toggling skirmish mode and guard mode every battle, and all this time I could have just toggled it ONCE in the SETTINGS menu?!?
With Ungrim I got fun time early game with a mostly slayers (like 10) army, just run ahead and kill everybody ! You lose some but they're cheap Worked with Ska rsnik + a Waagh, my 18 troops vs 32...lost 2 units And I hate Gyros, you need to micro them 100% of the time, impossible...
Nice, that would have felt glorious haha! What turn(ish) was this btw. Ungrim certainly has a tougher time than he used to. Fortunately there's no such thing as a weak Dwarf faction! Thanks for sharing your build!
How do you deal with warp lightning, ratling guns, poison wind and plagueclaw catapults? Skaven are absolutely horrible to fight as Dwarfs if they aren't killed off early.
Good question. In the early to mid game Grudge throwers should give you the range advantage. The Dwarven shields hold well against most ranged weapons, so I'd recommend moving the army up with shields in front using ALT+LMB until you close into the rattling guns range. If you can't get that close, then flank with a unit of Dwarf Warriors... yes, this is slow but you'll push the unit back, forcing it's retreat and stop them from shooting. A single unit is slow but can unnerve several ranged unit on their backline. As for warp lightning, you can attempt to move before it lands, but the best bet is to kill the caster. In general, skaven are best dealt with rapidly focusing to break the first wave, then focus down and KEEP shooting till you shatter once the heat is off so they stay gone.
One man doom stack them, take whatever lord, talisman of perseverance, armor of destiny, rune of spite + ironwardens tankard with army rune of stoicism so they are unbreakable will be able to negate all that stuff and wastes all their menace bellows. Same applies if you have an army with you just hide them to start(withdraw your artillery bc they cant hide yes v skaven its worth it). For the zero casualty run waste all their ammo and winds with your lord then launch the attack
Been getting my ass beat dragging Ordertide kicking and screaming to safety against hordes of CW, Vamps and Skaven and i was just getting utterly annihilated, always being outnumbered and outgunned, routing before i can do anything effective, so im gonna go back in using that gunpowder formation later. Cant seem to win anything at this stage of the game. Always getting flanked or murdered by beasts and cav. If this helps the battles click together, ill owe you a sub for sure!
Wishing you luck, general! It sounds like having a couple of defensive infantry on the rear flanks might be the missing piece. Let us know if you're still having trouble!
@@ElvenPlotArmour Went a head and started mimicking your formation in a few battles leading up to the final confrontation with Archaeon, and in most cases it worked just fine! Still took some mean casualties to CW once they reached melee range, it was a total bloodbath, but the Skaven were repulsed pretty easily. Archaeon got away with beating all the lords and heroes in combat including Thorgrim, but by the time he had finished doing all that the Organ Guns had just finished up routing the rest of his army, and he himself was put to firing squad. Can't thank you enough for helping me out with this video, might need to go back and find tips for stuff like Bretonnia or Lizardmen. That sub is yours, as promised.
@@rechinikov4978 Really appreciate it mate, I do try to find all comers setups that don't dominate easy battles and can face multiple chllaneges. You're success is a great outcome!
I'm a bit stubborn when it comes to sieges, opting to win by army loss rather than capture, so the slow dwarf speed doesn't really impact me. The basic steps of a Dwarf Offensive would be: - Don't scale the walls, find a gate with the least tower exposure - Mid/Late game: use artillery to knock down the few towers that might hurt you on advance - Early game: move up (ALT + MOVE) with warrior shields screening any archer fire and carefully use quarellers (careful to swtich fire at will on and off so you don't waste ammo on bad shots) Now: - bash through the gate with a melee hero/character - consider blowing a hole in the wall next to the gate to create Line of Sight - keep your ranged units (initally) outside the walls, but move in first with heroes - use heroes to bunch the enemy and set Thunderers up to shoot through the gate & breach holds. Quarellers can arc over the top, Rune of Wraith does good AoE, keep Gyrobomber moving but drop a couple of carefully placed bombs on their heavy infantry - you'll win most sieges as this point, except some really large battles - If you clear the area around the gate, create a screen with your ironbreakers and wheel your artillery in... pick apart the stragglers and GG
@@ElvenPlotArmour thanks bro and what’s a good army to compliment these guys in manual battle ? Like I guess to reinforce their turtle position and to counter against flanks
@@trevorbanks4136 Most of the setups in this video show what carry me through essentially any situation. Warriors and Quarreleres, then ronbreakers and Organguns later on with the odd priest and gyro support!
Is there any diference in ranged capability on quarrelers vs quarrelers with great weapons? If the only difference is the cost and mellee capabilities, arent the greatweapon varient worth it in ironbrow? So if/when ypu are put of ammo they arent a burden?
Most ranged units with different variants have the exact same missile damage, though sometimes different ranges. Great weaons would only be worth it if you were basically spamming Quarellers - and even then, the shield is always worth it in my eyes. Use melee AP to take out enemy armoured threats or just shoot them with thunderers whilst your shileded quarellers hold them in place. Quarellers with great weapons are a confused beast and useful in only very precise setups. The fact the Dwarfs have so many shielded units is one of their biggest strengths and you're weakening your formation whilst spending money on a role Thunderers (or even a unit of slayers/hammerers) could do better.
Both are excellent. Hell blasters are deadly accurate and great for downing characters, but organ guns also excel at spraying down armoured formations a tad better in my experience. Both units are great at addressing a potential weakness and rounding out the army's capability. Range is comparable but Volley Gun will soak more damage into a single target due to firing ~x2 rounds per volley with better calibration. However, Organ guns (while having fewer shots) have better AP and hit 25% more accurately with slightly better range. Make of that what you will, but I'll say I've never seen organ guns disappoint.
Play whichever difficulty you enjoy :) All these work on Legendary/VH and I've completed strong campaigns using variants of these. You shouldn't need to corner camp, but that's how you roll you can adopt much of this into that style too :)
Good question: 1) ALWAYS have guard mode ON and skirmish mode off - this keeps the formation together. 2) when a menace appears, send any cav or flying units into it - DON'T attack with your entire army, save your ammo. 3) don't panic - you'll break them quickly. If the Lord has many summons, keep your melee units placed between your formation to react quickly. 4) ....this sounds weird, but don't panic. Honestly, doing nothing will usually do better than shredding your own unit with your entire army's arrows. just use the surrounding units to focus till they break then STOP firing to save ammo.
@@fake21694 I tend to slowly crawl up the battlefield to a strategically strong area and bombard the enemy into coming to me. Having Slayers in reserve I think works best to react to any monsters that fly into your backline. Flanking isn't really their MO
What do you do with a faction like cathay? Even the skaven. I seem to have to rely on auto resolve a lot which is irritating because it will say ‘decisive victory’ and i will be like, yeah I definitely could not even win that at all. The dwarfs are my favourite faction i have found great success using plenty thanes with any lord and just chewing through the enemy with organ guns and thunderers and replenishing ammo with master engineers Unfortunately in the past couple campaigns i played due to diplomacy going in circles with allies being enemies and such i have ended up in a war against cathay who tend to be up in the top 3 strongest by those turns Since the dwarfs sit in a formation and defend really well how are you supposed to deal with there rocket batteries which far outrange your organ guns the sky junk as well outranges absolutely everything it can hit my organ guns before my guns are in range and without the organ guns i can’t eliminate there front lines and end up in a stale mate but while i am being quickly thinned out by rockets till everyone routs… like i know there is gyrocopters but if i rush there artillery with them typically cathay archers or flying cavalry especially just stop them in there tracks. Just seems cathay completely stops dwarfs and dont get me started on defending a siege😂 cathay basically dont even need to enter the settlement just win by rockets
Early on use jade warriors for the melee corners as seen here and peasent bowman in the beginning to keep the cost down and replace with jade crossbows. In the late game upgrade to the Celestial units. Attach a compulsory caster hero and a sprinkle of support units like a couple of Sky Junks and/or sentinels. They have strengths in most areas and I have them tipped to be the strongest race in IE when all is said and done. All they lack is content.
@@ElvenPlotArmour thanks for your reply but really sorry i meant like how do you fight them as the dwarfs i find them impossible strongest in the game for sure! I struggle with there artillery its so accurate and quick and far outranges my guns so it rips dwarfs play style apart long before there infantry even gets to my lines
I would would just make hella gyrocopters to back up any army you have to rush over to there back line and destroy all there artillery they can’t stop them all . All it takes are a couple bombs from one copter and there artillery is done when I know I’m facing a faction that can possibly out range me I spam copters !
Wait till the main army comes up a bit then rush around the flanks with your dwarven airforce and wreck them and then shoot the balloons in the back if they have some and then there you go back to having ranged upper hand and besides the balloons are not as tanky as the gyrocopters and there not as fast
I’m still playing wh2 until I get a better pc to handle wh3 and it’s awesome playing the dwarfs and the only person that can out range you is your natural Allies the empire and possibly Skaven but they I try to wipe out Ikit quick
Tried to beat Warhammer 2 legendary dificulty with Grombrindal. No way. Grom has won every battle, even in 1vs2 conditions. Yet still enemies are too much, and some random staff always ruin's the game. Ungrim ally lost to random goatmans? Easy. Some minor scaven faction i've didn't even knew about invade from north? Sure! You want at least few turns brake between green tides to repell scavens? Nope. Grimgor confederates Blood Spearz just before I've taken their capital? Yeah! Update. You've managed to wipe forest goblin's to the west of Karaz-A-Karak, to wipe Blood Spearz and have 1-2 turns to wipe Red Eye goblins? Managed in the same time save Barak Varr and Karak Kadrin? And Grimgor still not in war? OK, game will ruin you everything in other way - Karak Kadrin, an ally, will declare war to Zhufbarr, another ally.🤦♂🤦♂🤦♂ With 0/-2 neutral relations. With NO damn land or underground access to each other. With two ork opponent's that Karak Kadrin ALREADY have. With COMMON ENEMY. That is SO annoying....

Got 2 questions
1 how would you use this army in sieges
2 and what’s a good army comp to reinforce and compliment these kinds of range heavy army
I'm a bit stubborn when it comes to sieges, opting to win by army loss rather than capture, so the slow dwarf speed doesn't really impact me. The basic steps of a Dwarf Offensive would be:
- Don't scale the walls, find a gate with the least tower exposure
- Mid/Late game: use artillery to knock down the few towers that might hurt you on advance
- Early game: move up (ALT + MOVE) with warrior shields screening any archer fire and carefully use quarellers (careful to swtich fire at will on and off so you don't waste ammo on bad shots)
Now:
- bash through the gate with a melee hero/character
- consider blowing a hole in the wall next to the gate to create Line of Sight
- keep your ranged units (initally) outside the walls, but move in first with heroes
- use heroes to bunch the enemy and set Thunderers up to shoot through the gate & breach holds. Quarellers can arc over the top, Rune of Wraith does good AoE, keep Gyrobomber moving but drop a couple of carefully placed bombs on their heavy infantry
- you'll win most sieges as this point, except some really large battles
- If you clear the area around the gate, create a screen with your ironbreakers and wheel your artillery in... pick apart the stragglers and GG
I’m saying like what’s a good secondary army to reinforce your late game army ?
So which is performs better in battle, organ guns or hell blaster volley guns?
Both are excellent. Hell blasters are deadly accurate and great for downing characters, but organ guns also excel at spraying down armoured formations a tad better in my experience. Both units are great at addressing a potential weakness and rounding out the army's capability. Range is comparable but Volley Gun will soak more damage into a single target due to firing ~x2 rounds per volley with better calibration. However, Organ guns (while having fewer shots) have better AP and hit 25% more accurately with slightly better range. Make of that what you will, but I'll say I've never seen organ guns disappoint.
should i use this in very hard mode or should i just stick to corner camping
Play whichever difficulty you enjoy :) All these work on Legendary/VH and I've completed strong campaigns using variants of these. You shouldn't need to corner camp, but that's how you roll you can adopt much of this into that style too :)
Hey bro, got this for makakia?
How would you counter the menace below with these army comps
Good question:
1) ALWAYS have guard mode ON and skirmish mode off - this keeps the formation together.
@@ElvenPlotArmour With dwarfs not having any fast flying units or calvary do you think slayers would fill this role well
@@fake21694 I tend to slowly crawl up the battlefield to a strategically strong area and bombard the enemy into coming to me. Having Slayers in reserve I think works best to react to any monsters that fly into your backline. Flanking isn't really their MO
How did u get -1 on the global recruitment?
By having 10+ (roughly) of each building will allow -1 global recruitment time across the board.
What do you do with a faction like cathay? Even the skaven. I seem to have to rely on auto resolve a lot which is irritating because it will say ‘decisive victory’ and i will be like, yeah I definitely could not even win that at all.
The dwarfs are my favourite faction i have found great success using plenty thanes with any lord and just chewing through the enemy with organ guns and thunderers and replenishing ammo with master engineers
Unfortunately in the past couple campaigns i played due to diplomacy going in circles with allies being enemies and such i have ended up in a war against cathay who tend to be up in the top 3 strongest by those turns
Since the dwarfs sit in a formation and defend really well how are you supposed to deal with there rocket batteries which far outrange your organ guns the sky junk as well outranges absolutely everything it can hit my organ guns before my guns are in range and without the organ guns i can’t eliminate there front lines and end up in a stale mate but while i am being quickly thinned out by rockets till everyone routs… like i know there is gyrocopters but if i rush there artillery with them typically cathay archers or flying cavalry especially just stop them in there tracks.
Why a Diamond pattern vs a line?
the front unit gets caught and ties up the unit, leaving the remaining 3 free to shoot into the flanks of the engaged enemy unit.
It’s a grudgin’ if you don’t update this for Malakai / Dwarf Changes.
Plz..
If I was an evil genius progressive professor, I'd be teaching this in University.
And I would enroll in said university!
@ElvenPlotArmour lol sorry this comment was totally meant for another video. But YT went to the next video before I hit send. 😅
You should talk a bit slower when explaining, mate.
