If you'd put in those berry clusters from that sumac in the background, you could have made a jelly without any lemon juice or pectin. It'd also have added more berry flavor and brought out the subtle flavors from the pears.

I wonder how autumn olive would taste using its wood to smoke meat. I recently tried popcorn tree and was surprised.

I had some sweet jelly with chillies added. The sweet and sour experience is better than you would imagine. I love tomato based chilli chutney too! Nicey and spicey 😂👍🏻

I bet that jelly tasted awesome ! We haven't tried to make any jam or jelly in several years . The oak tree by my driveway is having a Mast year I have never in 18 years ever seen it produce like it has done this year . I don't have any pigs to feed all the acorns to witch sucks . If the oaks around here produce like that the deer will be staying in the woods . Thanks for sharing and have a great day !

Hey Mike ,,quick question .... do you not water bath your jam/jellies after you jar them ?? Noticed you just flipped 'em to let'em seal ... I just picked a bunch of olive up here (New England) and am going to make some jelly . I've done grape and cherry before and did the water bath method. Maybe it just doesn't last in your household and gets eaten fast enough ? 😊

    • @McGieHomesteadAdventures

Yes I’m not sure that this will last long, I’d recommend water bathing!

Looks good, I didn't know that you couldn't do a large batch of jelly, but it doesn't set, doesn't make sense if you boil it hard you would think that would work but it doesn't, I figured like u do a large batch and get done faster but it didn't set What part of South Dakota does Bob live in? Man your hedge rows look like a nature planted permaculture farm. Looks like I saw sumac, autumn olive and walnut in one brief split second screenshot. I have the same thing, but I helped nature out a little bit. But I do have a lot of autumn olive in the hedgerow along the back of my farm where I browse my goats. Yes it is invasive if unmanaged of course. Goats love it and they browse it down to the grown every year. I let it grow to about 5-6 feet and then turn my goats on it in midsummer, they take it to the ground and the cycle continues. But never ever did I know or consider the fruit to be edible or to be as nutritious as it is. Guess my goats are smarter than I am. 😂😂😂

Had to go back a watch this video again. Found a patch of autumn olive that the wildlife didn’t find, outside where the goats browse. I tasted them and I like the flavor. So I Believe I’ll make me a batch. Since I don’t have “old man Arthur”, I’ll be leaving the poke berries out and just adding the pear and some sumac berries as suggested by kenjohnsonUSA. I don’t eat much sugar these days. Got some signs of insulin resistance going on around my middle parts and diabetes runs in my family. But I can’t resist. All things in moderation. Right?😂😂😂

I've tried to find you on social media. I'd love to collaborate with you on a switch. Florida has an invasive tree issue with Chinese Tallow Tree (aka Popcorn Tree). Your state has a problem with an invasive tree...Moutain Olive. I'd like to propose a collaboration between our channels where you send me a set weight of Mountain Olive where I send the same amount of Popcorn Tree. We'd smoke meat and compare tye differences. If this interests you, my email is in my channel information. We can discuss and you delete this comment afterwards. I look forward to hearing from you.
