    Just chiming in as a Mechanical Engineer that worked for the automotive industry for a brief period of time but more importantly as a car enthusiast and connoisseur.
    Break in periods are more of a question of feeling good with your own conscience than a reality these days. No matter what the dealership tells you.
    Without much detail, break in periods existed so that the pyston rings between other things would fit against the cylinder wall since cylinder walls used to be rough to allow for better oil adhesion.
    Nowadays though, things are different. And the reason for that is we have much better technology than 50 years ago. We have much tighter tolerances, better machining technology, which allows for much higher controlls over dimensional requisites, we build more and more engine blocks on alluminium instead of cast iron which also further reduces the need for break in periods outside of factories.
    The other reasons as to why break in periods aren't really a thing anymore is because engiens are tested in factory before reaching the final consumer, which also happened with Rob's Ferrari, which means they were already submited to some sort of testing which includes but not only, high reving, and if this wasn't enough these days engines really break in in a matter of minutes/hours or a couple of miles due to all of that stuff I mentioned above.
    So, all in all, feel free to treat your engine well on the first miles but in reality, if your engine breaks during the first few thousand miles it will most likely have nothing to do with how you broken the engine in.

      What about scored pistons and sleeves from all of the metal scraps in the oil? Ask any tech that services cars, a lot of shit comes out in the oil at the first service. Mainly metal scraps. You don't want those running through an engine at high RPM.

    • @AJTalks
      @AJTalks 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      My California T had a break in period (owners manual specifies 1500 miles I believe) and when it was serviced the oil was filthy. Same engine as the 488, just different turbos.

      "Just chiming in as a Mechanical Engineer"
      That's a pretty big statement to make, considering I work with one at a Ford dealership in SC.
      You definitely weren't an engineer in the U.S. automotive industry, so i'll just take your comment with a grain of salt.

    Rob, highly suggested if you ever have the check engine light on and want to find the problem quick get the blue driver. You can get it on amazon and it is well worth the money. I've used it on my cars to find out what was wrong and was able to fix the problem. It helps to find out what's wrong quick and get it fixed quickly.

      A lot of modern cars have electric oil pumps that run for 15-30 seconds after you turn the car off, and an oil+water cooled ball bearing turbo isn't anywhere near as bad as old journal bearings for cooking when turned off.

    Love the non lock with keys in the trunk feature, reminds me of a time was going shopping, it was a little warm out, threw my coat in the trunk.... that automatic reflex of putting your keys in your pocket, realized it a split second to late, spent the next hour ripping the back seat out and trying to grab my coat threw the back seat cross bracing, at least the car wasn't locked. I would guess that same feature works on locking the keys in the car.

    To add to Rob's answer of why he got his car faster than Joe-Schmo is because Ferrari considers customers like Rob to be like extension of their sales family; they help them move more cars faster; not only because he is loyal to the brand, but Press too. It just makes good business sense for Ferrari, in spite of the risk of butt-hurt to some new customers, but everyone has to wait at first or they pay double or triple.
    Huge congrats on the car Rob, she is sexy AF!

    I agree on the convertibles, if they're well maintained they're nice. I actually just bought my first one back in August. Though I immediately bought stuff to stiffen the car up a bit, since it's a Stang. It feels solid, not quite as good as a modded coupe, but pretty damn good for a convertible.

      Auto journalist Doug Demuro bought a used Aston Martin with an unlimited mileage bumper to bumper warranty. the warranty was like $4k, but the car had tons of issues and he got over $6k in free repairs within two or three months. it's become a running joke to ask if someone's fancy new supercar has a bumper to bumper warranty, because most don't, but his used late 2000s Aston does.
