    Here's a really annoying thing I just learned: support points only build up on player phase. If you've been making a character tank a bunch of attacks while surrounded by allies in order to build up support like me, you've actually been wasting your time.

    They really should’ve given us more ways to gain/retain SP, such as being able to refund skills we changed our minds about and being able to exchange Bond Fragments for SP. Even if the exchange rate for both examples skewed against SP, it would still be better than nothing.

    • @TheMike0088
      @TheMike0088 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Absolutely. If they either lowered the SP cost of most skills by a lot, or made a bond fragment to SP exchange possible, engage would be the best fire emblem game in my opinion. The way it stands, 3 houses still has it beat for me (though that might change when all the DLC is out, we'll see)

    • @Hadosama

      You actually don't want to overlevel too much or you'll take away from the fun of the actual strategy in the maps when your characters are just op and beat thru any resistance
      A lot of the fun is being at or around the level the game intends you to be at so you don't bypass the strategy puzzle that's implemented in each map
      In previous entires, being able to grind in side combat aside from the main chapters has been a way for new players to get around any actual difficulty in the game, and something returning players try to avoid

    • @Varsona
      @Varsona  ปีที่แล้ว +9

      So true. It spirals too. Have to use stronger units to clear Said skirmish/paralogue...leaving your other units wayyy behind). • @majnuker
      @majnuker ปีที่แล้ว

      I played on Hard and didn't have too much trouble clearing things. There's a jump in difficulty at Chapter 12 or so, but outside of 1 or 2 paralogues where i had to do some abuse (Lief and Marth) I cleared without too much trouble.
      I did do some grinding in skirmishes etc. tho, but I spent a ton of gold kitting EVERY character, not just buying one set of weapons and moving them around, so you can be much more efficient.
      Maddening is a whole nother story though. It requires very optimized strategies.

  • @magmangle

    Not as much of a lesser known thing but more of an advice. Save before summoning bond rings. You can't reload your save and get different results, but if you get nothing at all of value in, say like 50 summons, just wait until the next time you return to the Somniel to try again instead of keeping the garbage you might not even use. This is especially worth doing in the mid-to-late game after you've already gotten a couple of good rings.
    It's also worth noting that reloading a save and summoning in a different game will yield the same tiers of rings, but different characters. Say you got an S ring on your first tenfold, but the stats are basically useless. HP, luck and skill, maybe. Knowing you got an S tier ring in the first place, you might as well just reload and check if another game you can summon will give you a better S tier ring.
    Some of the S tier rings that come with additional abilities can genuinely be stronger than some Emblem rings. One I ended up using for the bulk of my run ever since I got it was S Claude, who comes with an ability that gives bow range +1 if your unit is at 100% HP. It made Alcryst infinitely better being able to chip away or kill using a Silver Bow with Longbow range.

    @n00bplayer72 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    For comparison: In Xenoblade 3, the game does several forced tutorials as you gain access to new mechanics. When you unlock the ability to change classes, the game forces you to change everyone's class. When you learn your first new skill in that new class, the game forces you to go and equip that new skill on your character. When you gain access to the skill tree, the game forces you to open up the skill tree and buy skills, etc. Stuff like that would've been helpful here.

      That sounds extremely tedious and hand holdy, the game encourages or even directly tells you to do almost everything mentioned in this video. If you didn't pay attention to the pop up explaining how sp works and never explored the somniel then that's entirely on you.

    • @Varsona
      @Varsona  ปีที่แล้ว

      @Dweeb Patrol A mix is good for the overall structure. Alot of things I point out in the video I don't personally have a problem with; having experience and being a more Nerdy mechanics person; but I do see alot of comments that essentially read as "instructions unclear" and in some cases I would agree. It can be easy to miss if you are taking the game much more casually.
      With that said, alot of simple tutorials could be conveyed much more strongly with a simple voice line or something to that effect. People tend to skip out on some guidance text; but will usually listen to dialogue if it exists.
      Player onboarding is super important and every fan of the game should want this; its how we grow as a community and why it has been awesome seeing the helpful replies in the comments 😃

    • @dweebpatrol
      @dweebpatrol ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Varsona The instructions aren't unclear though, it's almost entirely people blaming the game for things they chose not to read. • @Varsona
      @Varsona  ปีที่แล้ว

      @Dweeb Patrol you're right. That's why I mentioned in the video that some of these things do come up in pop up guides but could be communicated better. Not that they don't tell you. Telling is one thing, teaching is another.

    Most of this stuff is easily figured out by just wandering around the somniel, which is precisely what I did after a few chapters, if the game had hit me with tutorials for all this stuff the moment I set foot in the somniel it would have been a major pain and I might not have even wanted to play at all after that.

    lots of these complaints are fair but to be fair right back none of this stuff is really "needed."
    That said I 100% agree about SP. As the tutorial prompt about inherited skills makes very little mention of SP and how you get said SP and how thats how you GET INHERITED SKILLS.
    It just tells you. Get inherited skills they're neat and useful and you get them via bonding with your emblem. Failing to mention that unlocking an ability doesn't mean you have the ability. As you need to buy it with SP.
    SP in that regard kinda makes it a slog for no good reason. You can just have the bond lvls be more expensive as bond fragments are a readily available resource. And lvlling up with bond fragments is far more natural. As unlocking lvls this way means... you don't need to grind SP.
    And yes I'm aware SP comes from FE Heroes and this game kinda screams the influence. However this isn't fking FEH this is FE Engage. It has no obligation to use systems from past games if they don't make sense when a more natural and streamline method exists.

      I've already built out my personal SP budget and bond paths for my playthrough, having done some research before going on a no grind maddening run specifically because my resources would be limited.
      My points stem from seeing many different comments of people not knowing these things which leads me to believe that there's a problem of conveyance.

And I mean, there might be maddening players who don't do research before doing their first playthrough on maddening, but I think that percentage of players is VERY low.
      I TOTALLY agree that there is a problem of conveyance, on one hand because the game throws a lot at you in the first few chapters with the somniel and whatnot (I think I was pretty attentive during the tutorial phase of the game, yet I still missed that bond rings give less SP than emblem rings), on the other hand because it poorly communicates just how important SP eventually is.

Promoting before the level cap isn't something they should have to tell you to do, they indirectly recommend it anyway by giving you master seals early too. Achievements and donations are just always there and highlighted, if you didn't find them it's because you ignored the game telling you to check them out. And again, you're encouraged to do relays, if you choose not to do something the games tells you about then that is your fault.

    Topic 2 is completely flawed and by my estimate false. By that logic a lvl 19 unit gaining exp towards lvl 20 is the same as a level 10 unit gaining exp towards level 11 since your "internal level" is the same for both. Internal level is about a unit with its levels before promotion combined with the levels in their promotion. A clanne promoting at lvl 10 to a level 1 sage has the same exp formula 1-10 as the unpromoted Clanne would have if he kept going level 10-20.

    Skirmishes, as far as I can tell, the level of the skirmishes you get is approximately equal to your avatar's internal level. This means that if you progress through the story without grinding, then the units you don't deploy will fall so far behind in level, that it becomes basicly impossible/very time consuming for them to catch up (as they are too weak to fight enemies so that they can gain exp).
    You can use tempest trials to reset the arena and gain some exp, although you can only do tempest trials after chapter 11, and only gain experience on trials of difficulty 16 or higher, far beyond what the early game recruits could contribute to.

    2 things you didn't mention that I wanna say here
    1. How arts calculate damage: the martial arts scrolls are weird in that they calculate dmg using the average of your str and mag (str/2 + mag/2 + weapon might) instead of only using one of those attacking stats. But the damage is still counted as physical meaning skills like lunar brace which activate on physical attacks still work with martial arts scrolls.
    2. Stat bonuses from emblem rings.
    Every emblem ring gives some stat boosts automatically while you have them equipped.
    But the ones that give flat base stat boosts (Roy giving str Celica giving mag etc) will already have those boosts built in on the unit who equips the ring as soon as they are unlocked.
    For example a unit with Celica ring that unlocked mag plus 3 will automatically get that mag plus 3 while having that ring equipped without needing to inherit it
    However boosts of calculated stats(hit,avoid,crit,dodge/crit avoid)
    Are not automatically gained while you have that ring
    So someone with Roy's ring will get his flat str bonuses but not his bonuses to sword power if they do not inherit from him even if they equip his ring.

Maybe just lay off the caffeine before you record. I can tell you have a lot of useful tips, but I don't understand several of them even after repeatedly rewinding.

      Hard agree after rewatching my own edits. Apologies for the lack of pace control on this one; appreciate the feedback!

    Honestly, you should be able to exchange bound rings for SP books. When you have an S rank of a ring there is no reason to keep the lower ranks except if you intend to merge them for even more of the same ring you probably only need 1 of.

    One thing that took me way too long to figure out was that some emblem skills only work if they are inherited while others will work just by emblem equipped. For example, if you have a character with Sigurd, just by having him equipped you will gain Momentum, but you won't gain his Lance Power unless you spend the SP to inherit it.

    Something I learned working on trying to Max Anna's Luck is there is a Hard cap of +20 to any one stat from Effects and Emblems, Stats Skills can stack with Emblem Stat increases. For example LucinaIvy with +5 Dex Skill gives +10 Dex But AnnaByleth with Luck +12 Skill will only get +20 Luck instead of +24 Luck

    Not knowing how SP gains work was the most frustrating thing for me. It's actively wasting a limited and hard to get resource by not having a ring equipped

    I'm not to concern with the internal levels by any means. The only thing that I wished that stayed would be the automatic promotion from hitting level 21 in a base class.
