    Just a thought.
Decades ago, a mass production machine shop I worked at.
We used compressed air to cool tools and blades.
The work pieces and tools were in an enclosed work area, not in the open.
The result was less mess with coolants.
We did however, use large air compressors, in a separate room, 3, 2000 cfm compressors.
    Air nozzles were from Exair.
This vid brought back some great memories.
    Thanks.

6:03 the soap acts as a whetting agent, similar to when you need to spray certain oils as pest prevention on food crops foliar sprays, that's how we get the oils to "mix" for lack of better word into the water to atomize and spray properly cover foliage.

The guy over on the "Out Of The Woods" channel (he runs an LT-70) talked about trying different lubricants, including windshield wiper fluid.. Like the dish soap, it makes water "wetter" (reduces the surface tension) and so helps cool down the blade.

Looks like a fork lift extension. Two suggestions: (1) Set up a rain barrel to collect rain water off your building. Using rain water for your lube system will avoid the rust issue. (2) use an aftermarket gas can vent cap (usually yellow) can be purchased on Amazon or local automotive parts store. I think it takes about a 1/2" hole drilled in the tank and simply press snap it into the hole. They have an attached cap that pops on and off and you never lose it, unless it breaks. Thanks for the videos.

A little dish soap is good wetting agent to help the water disperse over the blade

  • @ron827

I think the dish soap makes the water wetter and reduces surface tension, thus it tends to cover more of the blade rather than beading up.

3:32 you can use a water tap on the other side as well, facing upwards, so that you have the ventilation.
Another option is a DEA membrane in the muffle itself. They are used in IP67 rated devices to keep the water out and ventilate the humidity.
Or a one-way valve with the right muffle would work as well.

Looks like a ball hitch attachment for a fork lift? Great job on the advantage of keeping your blade cool to extend blade life. The reason that adding a liquid soap to you cooling water is that it help breaks the surface tension of the water and helps it flow better to the cooling head. God bless and stay well.

  • @glen.simpson

soap is a surfactant....a surface active agent..... it reduces the surface tension of water...... it works for washing clothes because it allows the water to penetrate the fabric where as when not in there, the surface tension of the water keeps itself from deep penetration...... so smoothness I suppose.... yes, make things flows more easily and reduce potential clogging at the tip....... drops on a quarter with soap won't build up......

Great video. When we got our mill the guy drilled an 1/8” hole in the vent cap so you can leave it screwed on all the way. Also when we are done using our mill we detention the blade to 500psi so it doesn’t keep stress on it and I think it works because I haven’t broken a blade yet.

The detergent in your lube is an easy fix, your friend using the pine sol also gets the benefit of the pine oil solvent removing sap from the blade, but detergent is fine for lubrication. Use the cheapest one, you don't need dawn as you are just changing surface tension not degreasing.

Allways love when I learn stuff on a video. B.t.w. the dishsoap (do not recall the proper word on English) to make the water smother. What hapends is that water bind to itself giving it surface tension. (You might have seen those small bugs running around on the surface of a lake or when you fill a glass of Coce a little over the edger without spilling any). The dishsoap (VERY little is sufficient) breakes theese bonds making the water not stick to itself in the same manner.

The water is mainly for cooling, the additives for lubrication and for dissolve sap/pitch. We have LT40 and electric 50
We use lots of additive. Sometimes 18oz per 5 gal. And will help keep system from rusting using only water
The cap on water jug.... just drill a small 1/8" hole in the cap and tighten away. The hole isn't that big to loose much water. Can even experiment on 1/16" hole

As I am sure you have found already, iron stains oak, especially when the oak is 'green' - meaning unseasoned.

Llubricating and coolant systems using water-soluble oil are standard for metal sawing operations. Given the width and length of cuts you are making, you would be fools not to have one. You are also correct that the denser the material, the greater the benefit, as in hardwood. Soap reduces surface tensionso the water spreads out on the blade and gets into the cut where it is needed.
Can you filter the water before putting it in your tank? Perhaps through a coffee filter. Let the well water sit in contact with air for a day before filtering to let the dissoved iron form rust.

We considered water-soluble oil in our bandsaws and edgers because we saw the benefit. But all our coolant just runs out on the floor or the ground and the environmental quality people said no, we had to recover it so we gave up.

I'd put a magnet in either the coolant tank, or in the filter , to collect the iron.
It depends on how long do you have to clean the filter, if the situation is quite bad, then a decent sized one can be placed in the coolant tank, and clean the magnet every few refill.
If not, then a tiny one in the filter would do the trick.

Emerald, Something I should add. Using soap instead of water-soluble oil is a good idea. The oil could leave a residue on the lumber which could interfere with paint adhesion and cause problems with customers.

love these. drill a small hole in the edge of the water tank vent and tie it to the handle, then you won't have to fool with it

I use diesel fuel on my wood-mizer for cooling and lubing the blades . Wood-Mizer does not recomend it but it has worked for over 25 years and it doesn't freeze up in winter sawing . And the only thing that I need to change appox every 5-6 years are the clear hoses . The last time that I changed them out I put in regular fuel line . And before everyone jumps on top of me a few galons of diesel last thousands of board feet . A lot of times I'll in the spring I'll dump the fuel for the diesel engine (: Lomberdini :) into the water tank . It works for me, also I get into some real nasty sappy wood .

A squirt of dish soap added to the water reduces the surface tension of the water.

It's a custom device designed to attach to the forks of a forklift or loader with a ball hitch to move trailers around the yard is my guess.

@@KenBreon What if the trailer keeps rolling and it slips off the forks? We had a torch cut hole near the end of one fork with a pin to prevent slip off.

The water is absolutely necessary, however it does not keep the blade “cool”, it keeps it clean. Without it pitch will build up and cause friction. As others have started, Dawn will cut the surface tension making the water more efficient.
So two things that heat a blade are build up and dullness.
PS, use less water and speed up your feed rate.
Keep up the good work and work safe.

It looks like an adapter that fits on the rear ( underside) of a tractor or truck to make hooking up trailers or accessories easier
The two long arms are bolted to frame underneath?

It keeps your stacks of dimensionals correct to store the wood in drying racks.
Take care and be safe and God bless amen.
And the water lube also prevents burning of the wood.

Instead of tape on the lube water tank breather have someone take a solder gun & weld/melt a black zip tie on the top of the cap and either zip tie to the handle or see if the zip tie will have enough strength to friction wedge against the side of the cutout surrounding the vent cap...

The soap acts as a surfactant making the water "wetter" breaks the surface tension and it spreads out better. I am surprised that Hemlock it not sappy I figured it was an coniferous thing to be sticky.

Could be sediment or something built-up in the water pump or lines somewhere might be that you have to take it apart and use compressed air to clean it or there could be a little screen in the system or pump like in saw and weed trimmer carbs.
