I unironically believe Barbie is the frontrunner. Greta Gerwig has a flawless track record, and a bigger budget/IP doesn't hurt her award potential. It's high concept and cool like EEAAO, but it's also a classic star vehicle for a major movie star.
These are always fun! I can’t find it in my heart to believe Glenn Close will ever win. It’s just too upsetting. That would be my #1 wish though. I met her behind stage after Sunset Boulevard a few years ago. I got the opportunity to tell her how amazing her performances were in FA and DL. I told her she was robbed by Cher (well she was!) and she laughed. She was lovely!
I think Lead Actor is shaping up to be the competitive category this year. Cooper and Phoenix are basically doing the Oscar-bait dance, the Leo/De Niro/Scorsese collab will thrill their fanboys, and Cillian Murphy seems poised to finally have a “moment” like many great character actors have had over the last few years, (JK Simmons, Allison Janney, etc). I would feel more confident in Joaquin as a potential frontrunner for his multiple vehicles this year, had he not won recently for Joker. I’m not a huge Nolan fan, but I’ll admit: Oppenheimer is the one I’m stoked for this year. It’s not even the big cast that has me excited, I just LOVED the trailer, and I’m curious as to how they’ll adapt the events for film. I dunno if Cillian Murphy will really be able to compete with big names like Joaquin (who I could DEFINITELY see winning a second Oscar this coming year) or Leo (who I highly doubt will ever win another competitive Oscar), but I’d be very keen to see such an understated workhorse Actor take the gold.
I’m looking forward to Oppenheimer and curious how many awards it’ll be nominated for. Be cool if Christopher Nolan finally won an Academy Award or two. Thanks for the video Brian, keep up the great work!

IMO Joaquin Phx is the rare actor nowadays that even ppl who aren't really into movies will watch his movies just because they know they'll get a good performance and an interesting film. Putting JPhx in an Ari Aster film means that Ari Aster has "arrived". I wouldn't be surprised if JPhx gets nominated for 2 performances in 2 movies this year, if not at Oscar itself, then across the panoply of awards ceremonies. With genre films becoming increasingly psychological layered, and mainstream movies becoming increasingly one-note, there is room for Best acting nominations from the Genre films, and I'm here for it! Will be interesting to see how your predictions play out. I think though one has to think of Indie films that might come out of nowhere like "Everything Everywhere...", "The Whale", "Aftersun" and even "To Leslie". Although the big guns are easier to predict.

Streaming will most definitely play a part for next year’s Oscars. With streaming you have options and those films could last long enough to get awards attention
The case with Dune 2 and Wakanda Forever is not the same. Dune 2 is effectively the second part of the same story while WF is the usual superhero sequel, all things considerig. Dune 2 should have the juiciest parts of the story and also has Pugh and Butler compared with Dune 1. Except for a huge disaster, I can't see it being snubbed at the Oscars, especially in the technical and craft categories.

Although Past Lives is nothing like EEAAO, it's nevertheless this year's face of Asian-American films at A24. This could be a pair of competition to watch for.

The epic is dead. Last Duel was a solid movie but nobody liked it. If I’m not mistaken, Napoleon will air on Apple+ so it can forget about getting an Oscar. I think the Academy should just give Ridley an honorary Oscar.

As soon as I saw Moore’s name here, I freaked out. She’s my favorite actress, and I’ve been wondering if she’ll ever get nominated again. I ran into her in the Village in April 2014. I didn’t know it then, but she was about to win Cannes the next week. She stopped and talked to me for about 5 minutes, let me take a pic and even hug her. And then, of course, she won the Oscar for Still Alice the next year. I’m convinced she just needed that hug! 😮. I’ve been a fan of hers since 1986, when she was on As The World Turns.

Biopics are always strong contenders. Lee Miller had a crazy life that could have been adapted decades ago without Kate Winslet and it still would have been nominated for something.
I think Mads Mikkelsen has to be taken into consideration. I think it will be in Cannes and Mads can win best actor there. Oppenheimer is such a liability. It is written by Nolan and Nolan alone (HUGE RED FLAG!) and so it will all depend on how crazy he went. And he is not a great writer for female roles, so Blunt is simply not happening.
