if a person is unable to resist the urge to break the laws in a foreign country, they may want to seriously consider just staying home. if they go there any way, any subsequent punishments received are 100% their own fault.

Just to note that schools had corporal punishment until the 1960s. This idea that physical punishment is alien to the US culture is ludicrous.

Schools in Louisiana and Texas still have corporal punishment and it can be administered on adult students against their wills.

I was in Singapore American School at the time this happened. I knew Michael Fay, Rudy, Damian, and Stephen-- who were all arrested over this incident. My recollections could be wrong after all of these years, but from what I remembered, Michael's father knew Bill Clinton and he thought that the connection would mean the courts would go easier on Michael. I vaguely recall hearing that his lawyer (after talking to the lawyers of the other boys) encouraged him to take the fall for all of them, believing he would only get a fine, but that the government wanted to make an example of him. I remember Stephen being very stressed out while out on bail and saw him looking at brochures for schools in other countries when we were supposed to be working on a group project together. Can't say I really blame him. Damian's lawyer was smarter. He saw the red flags and encouraged him to leave the country. He had two passports-- German and Australian. He only surrendered one of them so he was able to use the other to leave. Don't know if its true, but I heard that when the officials found out he was gone, they allegedly detained his younger sister. Rudy was Malaysian and he was saying that they hit him with a large phonebook and tried to beat a confession out of him while he was in custody. He was Malaysian so he felt they were treating him worse than the white boys.
I remember that Damian was a bit of a prankster-- he once ziptied my backpack to my desk, but he was generally a nice kid. Stephen was a nice kid and seemed quiet. Don't remember too much about Rudy-- he didn't seem like a troublemaker. Michael was quiet in classes when his friends weren't in them, but in classes he shared with friends, he was a brat. There were sort of balconies on the upper floors for the classrooms and he tried to push an Italian student over the railing once. He was disruptive and loud in Mr's Hung's class and repeatedly ignored her requests for him to be quiet. When she asked him to leave since he wouldn't be quiet he kicked a support column, kicked a chair, shouted "I'm the best thing you have in this class" stomped out and slammed the door. Don't know if it's true, but his friends said he got $100/week allowance and spent $80 of it on booze. I know he and some of the other kids liked to go to clubs and drink.
I remember at the time I thought he deserved to be caned, but now I don't think so. He shouldn't have been dumb enough to commit the crimes, but apparently he wasn't actually guilty of everything he admitted to and had bad legal advice. Plus I don't agree with corporal punishment.
Cars in Singapore are extremely expensive. 300% tax on the purchase price and they have to be kept new. I don't think they allow cars older than 5 years. Don't know if its true, but I heard one of the cars vandalized belonged to a judge's wife. And I also think that the anti-vandalism law was originally intended to deter communists who were using graffiti and vandalism to encourage insurrection against the government.
I vaguely recall being told that when golfing, some of the people would joke that the Americans had 2 strokes deducted in their games because of it. Note, I did not play golf, nor did anyone in my family, but my father worked with the US Embassy and told me about some of the jokes he'd heard from people there.
Oh hey, 14min and 12 sec in and I see Stephen (although the video is blurry).
I actually met George Bush Sr at an embassy event when all this mess was going on. He asked me what school I went to and when I told him, he asked me about Michael Fay.
I do love that this video ended on "Fuck Around and Find Out".

I totally agree with everything you wrote... I live here in a little farming town in Utah.. I call it my comfort zone.. Someone throwing a piece of chewing gum on the ground??

    • @catsmeow5566

@@teresewecker They outlawed gum because it literally gummed up the doors for the MRT (Mass Rapid Transit) system and caused delays. It was causing all sorts of problems and they discussed it and said that banning gum entirely was the way to go so it wouldn't happen. They take littering very seriously there too. People caught littering not only have to pay fines, but have to do community service picking up trash while wearing vests that identify them as litterers so shame them. At least, that's what they did back when I lived there.

@@teresewecker I thought I had replied to this but don't see my reply. The chewing gum was banned because it literally gummed up the doors for the MRT (Mass Rapid Transit) system. Shortly after it went operational, there were delays because gum was getting stuck in the doors and causing them to not close or open. They held an emergency legislative session and decided the solution would be to ban gum. Once it was outlawed, the problem with the doors stopped and they didn't have any accidents with the MRT for about 10yrs. The 1st one I recall happening was when someone operating a wrecking ball at a construction site effed up accidentally swung the ball into the tracks. No idea on the accident statistics since then though. I haven't been back to Singapore in decades.

We have a lawlessness and incarceration problem. Corporal punishment in lieu of longer prison sentences helps the perpetrators (it’s corrective and they can return to society sooner) and society. Recidivism rates would drop and the law will be respected. Prisons are unfortunately mostly just colleges for criminals where you receive an associate degree in criminality.
