I have one question.. I have heard many guitar teacher suggests that left hand finger should be angled a little towards right hand/ guitar body.. because that way one can easily access to the 4th fret.. But, I generally practice guitar by straight finger parallel to the fret metal & maintain even gap between my four fingers, in that way I also can stretch my 4th finger to the 4th fret easily.. & also I place my finger to the corner to the fret metal & press by my finger tip.. So, my question is do I need to change my left hand position from straight/parallel to the fret metal to a little angled to the right hand or guitar body?? and If I don't change my left hand position then will that be a problem for my future playing & will it be a problem in playing guitar techniques like hammer on, pull of, slide, vibrato etc.?? Please answer.. If you answer this I will be very grateful to you.. Thank you.. 🎸
I don't play metal and I don't play progressive rock, but I stumbled onto this channel months ago and decided for fun to see if I could learn a little about shredding. I play primarily Blues and Classic Rock (I am all about those Boomer Bends) and I was shocked last night when I went to go learn some new solo's at how much I have improved. Staggering! how easy somethings were, that would have given me a hard time 6 months ago. I just walk over them without even thinking. Older solo's I know sound cleaner and I am adding in new flourishes with these techniques Improved picking technique, improved finger discipline, not having to play at what would have been my max speed, and more. These workouts really improve every style, and your playing in general. Can't wait to rock this one for the next 30 days and see what happens. Keep up the great training and great videos, Cheers
I've had this experience too. So happy I found this channel. I'm self taught for years and it has really given me the motivation to practice and develop more. It can be frustrating but also really exciting to see yourself progress. Like when you go learn a new David Glimour solo or something and realise it's coming to you way easier than it used to.
We're so fortunate to have people that make videos like this for other guitarists. I wish I had this when I first started. It would've saves me a lot of time and mistakes I've had to fix. Thank you to you and anybody else that does this for others. Can't wait to practice this.
Yup. When I started, REH videos were about the best instruction you could get, and most of the players featured weren't what you'd call great teachers. They either sucked at explaining things, or treated the whole thing as a joke (as Yngwie famously did in his REH video).
Started on 19/12/21 Day 1: Started today at 50 bpm Day 2: Reached 100 bpm but my left hand stopped cooperating Day 3: I can now play 100bpm with much more ease, I struggle a bit at 110bpm Day 4: I can play 110 bpm (not very cleanly tho) but my hands stop working at 120bpm Day 5: Still stuck at 120 bpm, I can now play 110 more easily tho Day 6: Almost no change since last time, still stuck at 120 Day 7: I went on vacation without my guitar and I haven't practised in over a week so I am back at 100bpm Day 8: 110bpm comes off pretty easily but still not able to go up to 120 Day 9: Almost able to do 120, still not completely tho Day 10: At 120bpm, 130 seems impossible Day 11: My hands felt tired today, I only got to 110 Day 12: Back at 120bpm, still not clean Day 13: Fell back to 110 again Day 14: Still can't get 120 clean Day 15: I stopped practising this for a while to focus more on improv but I am back to finish it this time. Currently at 110bpm Day 16: Pulled off 120 bpm and close to reaching 130bpm. I aim to finish the challenge by day 30 Day 17: I can now play 130 bpm but it sounds kinda sloppy Day 18: Still at 130bpm although now it sounds cleaner Day 19: No improvements since yesterday, still can't reach 140 Day 20: Getting closer to 140 Day 21: I can kind of play 140, although I miss a few notes Day 22 : No major improvements since yesterday, although I feel more comfortable playing at that tempo Day 23: I can finally play 140 without missing any notes, but I still gotta work on playing it cleaner Day 24: Still at 140, 150 is too fast Day 25: Reached 150, but I miss a few notes now and then Day 26: Haven't made any major improvements since last time Day 27: Didn't have the best practise session today, my timing seemed off Day 28: I missed a few sessions as I was really busy this week, I barely reached 150 today Day 29: I've been pretty busy lately so I didn't have that much time to practise. I am still at 150 Day 30: I can keep up with 150 although it sounds awful
9 Feb 2024: been practising this exercise for almost 2 weeks. Started at 50bpm and worked my way up to 100bpm, which is not perfectly in sync yet. I do the exercise everyday for roughly an hour while watching tv in the evening. The improvements in my finger strength and technique over these past 2 weeks is truly remarkable already. Thanks a lot for sharing this Bernth!
Starting 15/06/22 10-20 mins a day Day 1: 80 bpm Day 2: 85 bpm Day 3: 95 bpm Day 4: 95 bpm Day 5: 95 bpm Day 6: 85 bpm (slowed down so I can play it clean, I was forcing too much through mistakes and not improving) I had to travel, so I didn't play guitar for 5 days Day 7: 85 bpm Day 8: 90 bpm Day 9: 90 bpm Day 10: 100 bpm Day 11: 100 bpm Day 12: 100 bpm Day 13: 105 bpm Day 14: 110 bpm (Struggling to be consistent, i didn't practice for a few days, but today i practice over 40min to beat the speed, i started at 70 bpm and focused on keeping both hands very relaxed and getting clean sound) Day 15: 110 bpm Day 16: 115 bpm Day 17: 120 bpm Day 18: 120 bpm
Started at 50 bpm. Up to 90 bpm after memorizing the pattern and practicing for 15 minutes. Going to keep practicing because the faster I pushed, the more I started noticing picking deficiencies. Thank you for this exercise, Bernth. It's definitely helping me see my lazy habits, and forcing me to improve.
This exercise rules…I’m at 100bpm after a day of trying (5/29/2023) and actually think I’m gonna be able to get to the end. I have the finger speed already to get to the end, but not the timing or coordination. I’m more of a Hendrix style player but always wanted to learn to shred for real and I think you’re gonna be a great asset. Will be joining Patreon, thanks so much!
I have been playing guitar for over 10 years, but I was self-taught from the beginning. I never really knew what to practice, and was honestly quite lax with myself lol. I spent a huge majority of that time basically learning songs that I liked, and this pretty much allowed me to play or learn whatever I wanted by ear (granted that it was within my boundaries technique-wise). When it came down to other things like picking fast, I found that I was extremely weak in those aspects. I had horrible picking and left+right hand coordination once the BPMs started rising. So now I'm spending a lot of my time playing catch-up. I stumbled across your channel and watched a few of your videos, and decided to go along with this one. I started about a week ago at Level 8 @ 120 bpm, and it was pretty comfortable to me. 130 bpm was where my coordination started to desync, so I took that as my starting point to grind. I practiced around this tempo, going up and down as needed. Fast forward to now and I just hit 140 bpm and both my hands are in sync. I love you Bernth lol you won me over 🤣I am sure I will hit 160bpm in the coming weeks. Please never stop making videos, you are truly amazing.
@@Tybren haha I have yet to reach 160! I was able to reach 150 the other week, though it wasn’t too clean. my hands just sort of fall apart when going 160. Then again, there are some weeks that I neglected alternate picking exercises all together so a part of it is probably my inconsistency as well lol. My hand synchronization has increased dramatically though so doing this routine has other benefits than just speed!
80 bpm at day 4 - I´ve been playing guitar for about 1,5 years and this already helped a lot to improve my alternate picking technique, Thank you for your Tutorials ^^
Day 1: 70 bpm Day 2: 70 bpm consistently Day 3: - Day 4: 75 bpm Day 5: 75 bpm Day 6: 80 bpm (barely) Day 7: 80 bpm Day 8: 85 bpm Day 9: - Day 10: - Day 11: 80 bpm After 3 months: 100 bpm
So I've been watching your videos for awhile now. My guitars were stolen 20 years ago and It took me awhile to get new ones and to also get my fingers to do what my brain thought they still could lol. I'm at the point where I'm trying to speed up my picking technique and was really happy to find you actually have this video. Pro tip... Next time put the tab at the top of the video because if you're trying to learn it and press pause, it gets covered by the pause options. So it requires replaying the video multiple times and writing it down. Which my eyes ain't doing great these days either, so even big writing compared to my 55" TV screen is drastically different. Just a thought. Love your content, keep up the awesome stuff!!!
Day one: Just started learning the chromatic for this exercise (50) Day two: learned to play 60 bpm cleanly, can just get to 70 bpm Day three: went to a friends so nothing Day four: did 60 and 70 cleanly, can do 80 semi cleanly. Day five: practiced polishing skills up and BARELY got to 90 after non stop practicing for 1.25 hours twice. Already feeling the improvement thanks Bernth! Day 6: 100 bpm (sloppy) Day 7: took in person lessons and wasn’t able to practice this exercise Day 8: tried to slow it down and improve my playing quality (90) Day 9: can play 90 cleanly, working on 100 Days 10-11: unable to practice Day 12: can cleanly do 100, 110 is manageable but could be better Day 13: cleaning up 110, 120 unclean Day 14: still cleaning 110 Day 15: satisfied with 110, picking cleanly at 120 is tough for me but like 110, I think I can get it with time Day 16: 120 is decent, gonna try 130 when my wrists aren’t dying 😅 bc I practiced a lot today Day 17: 130 is okay, 140 is choppy Day 18: decided to slow it down again at 130 Day 19: think I hit my first roadblock 140 still challenging Essentially days 20-23: kept practicing until I could get past 140 Day 24: 150 is manageable, could be better Day 24: improved 150 Day 26: 160 doesn’t sound terrible actually, just some minor adjustments may be needed Days 26-31: I’ve just been doing this exercise on and off, 160 sounds pretty good so I’d say I’d completed the challenge Some tips for new people: no need to hold the pick too tightly, being relatively relaxed but controlled is the sweet spot! Don’t reveal too much of the pick, this makes it harder to escape the strings and you will feel more resistance. Playing at a slightly slower tempo with quality is better than playing mediocrely at a faster tempo. If you are unsure of how something sounds, play with a clean tone to easily identify mistakes. This challenge is very doable! I’m an intermediate and this is just a special chromatic essentially
@@reddyred2913 Thanks a lot man! This exercise has changed my playing certainly for the better and I feel a lot more comfortable attacking more challenging tempos
I first started playing guitar 17 years ago, but over the last 6 years, I lost my love and drive for the guitar. Recently I've found that passion again, using this exercise daily is a great challenge to regain some of my lost skills! Day 1: Failed. Couldn't get through the exercise Day 2: 50BPM - Pretty chuffed Day 3: 80BPM - This routine is even helping with my sightreading Day 4: Away from home, no chance of practice Day 5: Still Away from home Day 6: 90BPM - I keep catching myself slipping into open hand and not supporting my fretting hand with my thumb. Day 7: onto 100bpm Day 8 - 50(ish): This is still part of my daily warm-up routine. 110bpm has become the comfort spot for warming up. I've shifted my learning goals to more theory-based development, but will revisit this soon and push to improve my speed!
It's cool how even though this has been up for 2 years, it's still helping guitarists daily! Mad respect. Day 1: Learning the pattern and 50bpm Day 2: 70bpm but not fully clean
August 17, 2023 - DAY 1: Currently at Level 6 100BPM (4:32) DAY 2: I can now play 110BPM (4:54), I'm gonna try to go 120BPM (5:13). Day 2.5: I can play 120BPM but it sounds so sloppy Day 3: Back to 80BPM, after listening to my recording, I realized how bad my technique was so I tried to make sure every plucked note is consistently good Day 4. Back to 120 with a slightly cleaner technique Day 5. Still stuck at 120, trying to improve my technique Day 6: Took a break and tried jamming to a backing track, I definitely saw a little improvement with my alternate picking. Day 7: I'm gonna try to get myself used to 130 BPM (5:31), then try to clean everything
December 13: 50bpm May 5: 140bpmn (not perfect tho) May 6:150 bpm June 1: Perfected 140 bpm 150bpm almost sounds perfect, just started with 160bpm June 20:160 bpm (not perfect tho) September 1, 2023: Came to understand that my picking technique is ass, start over once again with the correct picking technique September 25: grinding 120 bpm atm October 28: 140 bpm sounds kinda okay, but not perfect
Day one, practiced at least 2 hours and stuck at 90bpm. Will try to beat this tomorrow. I’ve been playing a little over 2 years and just now getting serious about developing my skills and technique instead of just learning more songs. Thanks for the challenge Bernth!
Started several days ago. Bit of a backstory - can't shred to save my life and got horrible technique with years of bad habits that I'm now trying to correct, "flying pinky" being the biggest offender, so I'm also trying to do routines to fix those at the same time I'm working on this. Day 1: Trying to learn and get through the whole thing in free tempo without forgetting what note comes next xD Day 2: Starting to get the hang of 50 BPM without stumbling, pattern memorizing issues for now as opposed to techniques. Day 3: 50 BPM down, 60 BPM doable but not effortless, 70 BPM breaks down, complete noise past that. Got a looooong road ahead of me, it seems. Day 4: Managed to start being able to do 70 BPM throughout, but far from consistent. Couldn't get a single coherent run at 80 BPM. Day 5: Getting marginally better... I think? Still couldn't crack 80 BPM. 70 is more or less consistent now though. Day 6: 80 BPM down! Just need to make it feel less tense and forceful. 90 feels basically impossible at the moment, can't even get through the first bar. Day 7: Yesterday's progress might have been a fluke. Forget 90, I couldn't even do 80 BPM reliably today. Day 8: Although still extremely tense and forceful, 90 BPM is starting to sound... recognizable. Yeah, let's put it that way. Day 9: Still working on 90 BPM.
@@Iznoot Quit? Well, yes and no. "Yes" as in I did stop practicing for personal reasons soon after the last update, and my entire studio is still mostly disassembled - don't even have anywhere to plug the guitar in right now. And "no" as in I do plan to get back to it eventually, but all the previous progress is all but guaranteed to be nullified at this point, so I will be starting from scratch.
Started this exercise about a week ago, first time ever playing guitar consistently. I'm on my 12 week. I can cleanly play level 3. As soon as I miss a note on level 4 I get all messed up. I look forward to this exercise everyday because you can see your progress from day to day. Thank you!!
Great job! I look forward to trying this. I’m an absolute beginner, but been playing guitar like 3-8 hours a day for the past 3 weeks. My finger coordination is improving rapidly from the damn spider drill, look forward to mixing it up with this.
1/5/24- I could get pretty consistent at 90 bpm, but I struggle with synchronization and I am tensing my shoulder. I'll have to slow it down to work on form for a few minutes each session to help me in the long run. 1/7/24- Haven't played too much in the last 2 days, but I was able to get 100 easily and got a very close attempt at 110. I'll give it another 15 mins to clean up my movements and give 110 another try. 1/8/24- Just did a 45-60 minute session to practice this and some other things. Got several clean attempts of 110 and was able to get through 120 relatively smoothly twice. 130 was a little too fast still though. Will come back and get a rough attempt tomorrow for sure.
My diary c: 15.01 - comfortable 70bpm. The goal now is to automatize the pattern and focus on swift switches between notes - remove as much unnecessary movement as possible.
Gonna spend about an hour a day practicing this, I’ll move up BPM when I can play it 7 times in a row without messing up Day 1 - Spent most of today getting familiar with the exercise. Struggling with the chromatics at the end and the pinkie reach to the 10th fret. Nonetheless, I got to 90 bpm today. Looking forward to this challenge!! Bookmark: 4:32
this really help. i’ve been trying to remember all the notes on 10 minute and after 50 minutes i already can pick any string accurately. thanks so much
Hey Berth! Started on 2.12.2023 Day 1: 50bpm easily done (I liked the melody and tried to do it with over 100 bpm, caught myself cheating with hammer ons :)) Day 2: 60bpm easliy done, no sweat. Day 3: 70bpm easliy done, no sweat.
Day 1: 50 BPM, trying to memorize the pattern. Day 2: 60 BPM, almost consistent. 2 days away from guitar. Day 3: Somehow got to 70 BPM, almost consistent. Came back after 7 months. It's the 6th of August 2024 and I'm starting the challenge again. Hope I'll continue. Day 1: 80 bpm consistently, 90 bpm sloppy. Day 2: Stuck at 90 bpm, a bit sloppy, but gaining confidence. Day 3: I am now comfortable with 90 bpm, although it's still sloppy. I tried 100 bpm, I need more speed in the left hand. I'll try my best to get there. Day 4 (after 2 days break): 90bpm very sloppy and difficult after the break Day 5: I'm confident with the speed for 90bpm, but it's still very sloppy. Gotta work on that. I tried 100 bpm and it didn't turn that bad. Day 6: There were many days I couldn't play the guitar. Today I tried a little bit and reached 90 bpm. It was sloppy, but there's some progress.
Day 1 21.9.22 - Took soooo long to even do 50BPM. Had a hard time getting the pattern. Got to 70BPM eventually. Day 2 22.9.22 - Finally memorised the pattern. Can get up to 90BPM sometimes. Day 3 23.9.22 - 90 Day 4 24.9.22 - Struggled to get to 90. Day 5 26.9.22 - 100! Day 6 27.9.22 - 100, didn't have much time to spend this day. Day 7 28.9.22 - 100 Day 8 29.9.22 - 110... can almost do 120. My hand, wrist and forearm have been sore all this time from this exercise. I feel like my playing is becoming more precise overall.. really quickly. Day 9 14.10.22 - Haven't been playing guitar everyday. I was probably overdoing it. 130 today!
Reached 180bpm on the second day. Then realized that it’s quarter notes, and four notes per beat 🤣 so I’m actually not even playing at 50bpm. I’m still proud of the progress I made as I am a new guitarist and can feel my hands grow stronger and more coordinated. I will continue practicing and see where I get lol 😂 4 Days: I’ve finally reached 50 bpm but I can’t play it perfectly every time. Enjoying this exercise as it’s making my finger strong and coordinated
@@vexxn2112 it is a 4/4 beat. 4 clicks for four packs of 4 notes. You Play four notes per click. Makes 16 notes in one 4/4 beat. 16th notes. You can practice it in 8th notes, too. Just play only 2 notes per click in the beat and stretch the practice material to two 4/4 beats.
Mid Player for 20 years... I finally want to learn how to shred! Doing this in combination with the Handy Sync and Legato Workout. Day 1 40bpm (learning that lick) Day 2 80bpm Day 3 80bpm Day 4 100bpm Day 5 100bpm Day 6 100bpm Day 7 100bpm Day 8 110bpm (starting to notice a problem with the descending pattern and the inside / out side picking) Day 9 110bpm Day 10 120 bpm ( skipped three days, control of the outside picking got better!) Day 11 110bom (skiped two days, couldnt get past 110 bpm) Day 12 110bpm (picking felt way better since started with the inside/outside picking workout) Day 13 110 bpm Day 14 120 bpm
Such a fun workout! I am getting back into guitar after a 3 year break when I had my daughter and so am super rusty! Day 1 2/8/24 up to 70rpm can keep up with 90 until my brain thinks too much and I get muddled on the notes! Can’t wait to see an improvement!
Man thank you so so much. This exercise and the ones on patreon have done wonders for me. I can transition strings easily now and keep time so much better. My heartfelt thanks to you man! You have made me a better guitarist, and an even better one in the future. 🤟
wow this actually helped so much im almost at intermediate level of playing but im at a point of playing i never thought i would ever reach thanks bernth
Day 5. I was stuck at 100bpm for 4 days. Right and left hand problems, no coordination...ring finger and pinky were not collaborating. I had to create another exercise to free these fingers and make them work as fast as the index middle and ring finger.Did three notes per strings with middle, ring and pinky alone I have reached 110bpm and need to focus a lot more. As I progress I see all kind of issues with my playing which I am able to correct by creating other exercises. This is very interesting topic. Thanks Bernth.
I'm late to the party, but I'm trying this exercise now. I'm not much of a speed demon, but I want to improve my alternate picking speed and accuracy. At the moment I am stuck at 90 BMP. I can ALMOST get 100, but it's a little fast for me. I'm 62 years old so I'm trying to unlearn some old habits. I tend to move my index finger and thumb rather than my wrist. I'm trying to unlearn and relearn but it's tough teaching an old dog new tricks.
Day 1: 50 bpm Day 2: 60 bpm Day 3: 70 bpm Day 4: 80 bpm Day 5: 85 bpm Day 6: 90 bpm Day 7: 92 bpm Day 8: 95 bpm Day 9: 96 bpm Day 10: 96 bpm Day 11: 94 bpm Day 12: 97 bpm Day 13: 98 bpm Day 14: 94 bpm Day 15: 97 bpm Day 16: 97 bpm Day 17: 98 bpm Day 18: 99 bpm (really glad I practiced instead of skipping!) Day 19: 98 bpm Day 20: 99 bpm Day 21: 100 bpm (woohoo!) Day 22: 98 bpm Day 23: 98 bpm Day 24: 99 bpm and 108 bpm bursts Day 25: 99 bpm and 108 bpm bursts Day 26: 100 bpm and 112 bpm bursts Day 27: 101 bpm and 112 bpm bursts Day 28: 101 bpm and 110 bpm bursts Day 29: 100 bpm
Day 1 Start (March 6, 2023) 110 bpm clean | 120 sloppy Day 4: Can hit 120 (sloppy and slightly tense) Day 11: I can finally hit 160 consistently and clean with no major issue. Took a while to adjust my picking form to accommodate for the speed/looseness needed. Day 25 (March 30): Still doing this daily. 160 is no problem for me after sufficient warm up. I'm doing this every morning right after waking up so sometimes the hands are extra tight. Also trying to utilize more thumb swivel to minimize wrist movement when alt picking to see if I can build up more speed that way.
I appreciate all the efforts that a lot of you teachers make to help us increase our speed. Most of the time, the challenge is perceived as being a picking challenge that can be resolved by good control of the picking hand. In my case, picking hand is the easy part. Whichever exercise I try, I am always stuck at about 85 bpm for 16th Notes (or even less, and I've been playing for years!) because of my left hand! My pinky is pretty small (much smaller than yours, Bernth) and it forces me into a position that has a serious limit it seems. I was wondering: does your Alternate Picking Masterclass take into account the left hand? I don't know what to do anymore and I practice hard!
What an amazing speed run. I was kind of bored with the same alternative picking exersizes. This is really cool and i do love a challenge. :-). 120BPM for me so far. 🤘
@@vicent5065 Thanks for checking up on me. I've been steadily making progress. Although not getting to practice as much as I want. I'm stuck at 100bpm still but it's progress. It's difficult but manageable and only a little sloppy. Still cleaning up before I move on. wish me luck.
for a few weeks i was stuck at 90 and i've been practicing this for about 3 weeks now and i'm slowly getting comfortable with 120 bpm its still not as clean as i would like but i understand its a part of the process. Excited to so where i'll be in the next few weeks!
Day 1: 10/20/23 50 BPM Day 2: 10/22/23 100 BPM Day 3 10/23/23 130 BPM Day 4: 10/25/23 150 day 6 10/26/23 150 day 7/8 10/28 160 just need to clean it up. thanks bernth!
has this exercise helped your all round playing, im trying to speed up my jamming over backing tracks using a pentatonic scale in all positions. would this exercise help me achieve this short term goal?
January 22 - 100bpm after 5 playthroughs. I'll definitely be practicing this all day. it's amazing what a difference 10bpm makes. Been playing for 25 years but never learned how to play lead, only rhythm and singing. Thanks a ton, I feel like this is gonna help a lot.
I will share my progress as well. Day 1: 40mins just to learn the progression, 50bpm is actually harder than 60bpm as i dont think as much in 60bpm, 70 is doable with some mistakes. 2 hours later 70 is easy, 80 is doable with mistakes. Day 2: 80 is easy. Weirdly i struggle with the direct ascends and descends after the 10th of 4th string. I always break the rythm and cannot return to it :(. 1 hour later 90 and 100 achieved. 110 is just ridiculous. Seems tmy left hand gave out :/ 1 more hour later 100 is normal, 110 is doable with some slip ups. Day 3: I found the issue, my pinky soar through the galaxy thus speed loss on my left hand denies me from gaining speed. working on pinky positioning. 110 is VERY HARD. 100 become somewhat doable. 120 is not fair. Day 4: Fixing my technique, 90 and 100 became easier while 110 is still very hard. 120 is impossible. 1 hour later first clean 100. Found out that resting my wrist on the bridge instead of not resting is much better and make me more relaxed. 110 is doable with slip ups at the end of day. Day 5: First cleanish 110, very few slip ups. My right hand is good now but my left hand feels very stiff especially if i do 3 of these loops back to back. Day 6: 110 is doable with slip ups. 2 hours later, Something weird happened, i just unlocked the ability i guess now 120 is doable? how? Day 7: 90 and below is just boring at this point, 120 is doable after warm up. 110 more clean. Guys... im an idiot. I just saw that my picking directions are all f ed up. It gave me huge clarity while playing. Day 8: 110 is very doable with warm up. 90 and 100 is easy. 120 is still a challenge but not impossible. 1 month later.... Day 1: 120 is doable. 130 is hard but not impossible.
So i got my first guitar 10 years ago at the age of 13, but I never took playing guitar seriously enough. I want to finally change that. So here I am. Start: 07.11.2024 Day 1: 50bpm: after the first try, I noticed that I can follow the pattern quite nicely, but at some points I definitely need to practice more. I'll update later if I got any better after practice. - yeah no still need practice lmao Day 2: see ya tomorrow, 50bpm, also because I was wondering how long others practice; I practice this about 15 minutes a day at the moment. Of course I could do it longer, but I feel like 15 minutes is a healthy practice time Day 3: I did improve, but I'm still not happy with the tones. Sometimes I accidentally mute a string with my pinky, because it's lying too flat on the strings. Of course I could just aim to be faster, but I want to get the base right, so still 50bpm Day 4: maybe I'm too hard on myself, but I really want to have clear tones - still 50bpm Day 5: I need to pause this challenge, because I realised something. I taught myself how to play guitar a long time ago, and after all this time I never saw that my technique, even tho it works, has some serious flaws in it. And this is exactly what is preventing me from going further. So I'm shifting my focus to eliminate those flaws and come back again to proceed with this wonderful exercise. See ya~
Up to 110 bpm, I started about a month or so ago, trying do practice every day (not successfully), I initially started at 80 bpm, there's been ups and downs and lots of frustration on days where I'm not as good, but it is slowly working. As an on and off guitar player for nearly 20 years these exercises are the way to go even if it's 20 minutes a day, thanks bernth
Can't believe how much progress I made. First time I tried it I had to take like an hour to internalize the pattern, then pretty quickly built up to 110 bpm in the following days. Now, like two months or so later, I'm at 140 bpm (albeit quite sloppy), which felt totally impossible when I first started. Slow but steady progress. Onward to the last level of the challenge! 12-12: Starting to try out 150 bpm, still quite some mistakes 13-12 140 bpm. Not a great day today 18-12 Have still been hanging around 140 bpm. Tried 150 bpm a couple times but it's really messy. 19-12 150 BPM starts to feel less elusive, albeit still very difficult. 21-12 140 BPM. Need to get rid of the flying pinky and learn 'economy of motion'. 03-01 130 BPM. Remember kids, we all have good and bad days. 07-01 150 BPM, but very sloppy. 22-02 150 BPM, 160 BPM finally seems to be in reach. 10-03 150 BPM, quite a bit cleaner than before. Trying to change the pick grip for more consistent results. 12-03 150 BPM, getting more solid by the day.
@@topaziscringeverycringe8532 Still trying 150 BPM every now and then. Have been focusing more on technique in the last few days and 140 BPM is at least more consistent now.
@@topaziscringeverycringe8532 I've been out of it for quite a while sadly. I'm picking it back up again as of today. With some determination, I should be able to get to 150 bpm more consistently. 160 bpm still seems totally crazy to me.
I'm an absolute beginner when it comes to shred guitar and guitar in general. Here's my practice journey: - Day 1: 90bpm safe, 100 possible but with a few mistakes - Day 2: 100bpm has become more fluent. [more to come (hopefully 😅)] Thank you so much Bernth for the amazing video content! Greetings from Germany 😃
You got this! Just keep chipping away at it. When I practiced this a few months ago, I could only play up to about 110 after a week or two; the first day was pretty rough. I never thought I'd be able to play anything faster than the first two solos in Metallica's Sanitarium, but with (mostly) consistent effort over the past few months, I surprised myself the other day by nailing some of the fast parts of the Bark at the Moon solo. It's that thing that all of us hate to hear, but it's really just all about practice - even when you feel like you can't play very well, by literally just playing new things on the guitar, you'll get better over time, even if you don't notice it in the moment.
Started 4/29/23 A little on my background. Played for over 15 years. I can do chords/rhythm and some fingerstyle but I always struggled with lead/playing with a pick (on single strings). I had stopped playing guitar regularly for a couple years, only strumming it here and there. But in the past couple months I have been inspired and determined to learn lead style playing, learn scales, learn the fretboard, etc. Definitely having trouble getting my speed up to a reasonable level. I have a book I'm following to learn scales and it says "16th notes at 90bpm is ADEQUATE for now". I can't help but laugh because it seems impossible right now but it insists on getting to that speed before continuing the book. So, I came here looking for exercises to get better and this one seems pretty good! So without further delay, here's my progress. Day 1 - Just getting the riff figured out. Kind of getting 50bpm somewhat. Day 2 - 50bpm is getting clean. 60bpm seems attainable but I noticed that I am having trouble syncing up my fingers when going down. 9-8-7-6 (like that). Riff is better memorized overall though. Day 3 - 70bpm is actually going okay. Sometimes I get it and sometimes I jamble it all to hell lol. I didn't attempt 80. Day 4 - 70bpm improved. Still can't do it more than a few times in a row at best. 80bpm is a struggle but within grasp. I did slow down to 60bpm and it actually seemed slow to me, but it was good to improve my accuracy. Day 5 - missed Day 6 - 70bpm improved. Started gracing 80bpm. Attempted 90 but fall apart. Day 7 - 70bpm is pretty comfortable. 80bpm somewhat consistent. 85 doable occasionally. 90 still not quite there. Struggling with my pick now. Feels like it's getting "caught" in the strings. Guess I'll review some "how to hold a pick" videos. WEEK BREAK (went on vacation) Day 8 - 90bpm! A little rough but I'm getting it! And I was able to do my C major scale at 90bpm too (also somewhat rough) but it's there! I have no idea where this came from. Idk if taking a break actually helped me? Is that a thing? Anyways, 100 is somewhat there. At 110 it falls apart. After 110 I keep picking without fretting notes to practice picking quickly.
Im able to manage 120 bpm but Ive noticed that I cant play other patterns ( already known) at the same speed. Is this because of the muscle memory developed for this particular exercise? Looking for some advice folks
I consider myself a slow learner so this will be interesting Day 1 : Can barely do the 50bpm version, it's not really because of the speed but because I need to memorize the notes well Day 2 : Could do the 50bpm as soon as I woke up, managed to do 70 bpm after 40 minutes of practice Day 3 : Cleaned up 70 bpm and can do 80 bpm pretty sloppy
Started Sep 4th, 2023 Day 1: Having trouble with the pattern, memorized about half of it Day 2: Memorized most of the pattern Day 3: Finally got the pattern down, consistent enough with 50bpm Day 4: I can keep up with 60bpm with occasional mistakes. Don’t have much time to play today so I’ll attempt 70bpm tomorrow Day 5: I can keep up with 70, 80 is very difficult Day Day 8: It has been a few days. Something I realized is that I need to work on my picking technique. I’ll update again when I make more progress Day 9: With my new picking technique I can keep up with 70, the problem I’m facing is I can’t seem to get any speed ‘perfect’. Day 10: Been making less mistakes and am more motivated now. I’m able to do 70 relatively consistently, but 80 is still a struggle. Day 11: I can keep up with 80, but it is not easy Day ??: It's been about a month since I last tried this. I am able to do 90 and keep up with 100 after having applied alternate picking to what I already know. Gonna continue my long break from this challenge to focus on other things but I may return one day.
Everyone has to understand there’s different techniques to different speeds I’d say one you’re pushing around 110-120 bpm work on keeping your wrist a little more straight and relaxing your thumb while anything before that work on using your wrist to get solid up and down strokes yes some people can probably get higher than 120 with just their wrist but for most of y’all try altering your technique once you hit faster speeds. It’ll feel weird at first but eventually you’ll get it down. Keep shredding y’all👏🏼
Beginner Electric Guitarist here :) I played acoustic for 2 years-ish? Been doing fingerstyle so it's my first time using a pick Day: 1 - 70 bpms, not clean but I can hit the notes at the tempo Day: 2 - 80 bpms (but not clean) Day: 3 - Back to 70 bpms no sleep (had work)
Day 0: Thinking about starting tomorrow 🤔 Day 1: 50 BPM with a bit of discomfort. Day 2: 80 BPM inconsistently Day 3: 80 BPM Still difficult Day 4: 80 BPM Starting to feel comfortable Day 5: 90 BPM feels impossible Day 6: 90 BPM Felt doable today Day 7: 100 BPM can't play all the notes yet. Day 8: 90 BPM Still needs work Day 9: 90 BPM I'm starting to blame my cheap guitar and picks 😑 Day 10: 90 BPM Almost there Day 11: 90 BPM Still feels difficult Day 12: 90 BPM Fells doable Day 13: Missed almost 2 weeks( stuck at 90)
Starting 6/20/23 Day 1: 60 bpm down, 70 a bit sloppy Day 2: 70 bpm, 80 bit sloppy Day 3: 90 bpm clean, 100 bpm very sloppy Day 4: still stuck at 90 bpm, i’m starting to think this will be impossible Day 5: 100 bpm! 110 sounds a bit terrible though 😅 Day 6: 100 bpm very clean. Can keep up with 110 but it doesn’t sound great. Day 7: 110 sounds a bit better.
Started on 26/01/2024 Had to start really slow as I've put off Alternate picking for years so gotta train out bad habits Day 1: Had trouble to begin with but after 20m got to 30 bpm with little errors still feels stiff though Day 2: (took a break over the weekend) Did about 10m today and improvement was crazy think alot of it was remembering the riff, can do 50bpm now with some errors think imma stick here and focus on correctly picking technique for a couple days before trying to go higher Day 3: Stayed on 50BPM Doing a lot better feeling better, still feel a little stiff and missed a couple notes with picking hand couple times Day 4: 60BPM! Have some runs where I do it near perfect and other runs where I miss some notes every so often again with picking hand so need to look into picking technique make sure I'm keep correct form! (Had to skip a day due to work) Day 5: Hit 70BPM with some errors although it feels forced/stiff 60BPM feels good though! Day 6: I can sense this is a sticking point Still feel stiff and forced on 70BPM although potentially a little less (need to focus on making sure my fretting hand is making as little movement as possible As I keep lifting my pinky waay of the strings) Day 7: 70BPM slightly less forced Day 8: returned after the flu 😵💫 70BPM but making mistakes, need to get back into rhythm Took a huge break to focus on music theory lmao 30/05/2024 Day 9: 80BPM (noticed my trouble is with going back up the scale my fretting hand has trouble removing the fingers one at a time with proper technique
Day 1: 60 BPM Day 2: 70 BPM (Kind of) Day 3: 70 BPM (Completed both sequences) Day 4: 70 BPM Day 5: 80 BPM (Almost) Day 6: Still at 80 BPM :( Day 7: 80 BPM COMPLETED! Day 8: Struggling at 90 Day 9: Still struggling Day 10: Kinda getting there Day 11: 90 BPM Day 12: 90 BPM Day 13: 90 BPM Day 14: 90 BPM Day 15: 90 BPM Day 16: I guess I’m just stuck at 90 Day 17: 90BPM Day 18: 90BPM Day 19: I took a pause Day 20: 90 BPM Day 21: I actually saw progress today, I think few more days and I will make it past 90 BPM Day 22: 90 BPM Day 23: 90 BPM Day 24: I think I’m gonna call it completed and move on to 100 BPM Day 25: Working on 100 BPM Day 26: Now I can actually do 90 without much difficulty, very proud of myself that I kept pushing Day 27: 100 BPM still a challenge Day 28: 100 BPM Day 29: 100 BPM Day 30: 100 BPM I completed the 30 day challenge, but I’m not stopping here, I’ll update my progress once every month until I’m satisfied. From other peoples comments I can see that I achieved less than most people did for 30 days, but that doesn’t discourage me from practicing even more. I’m glad I found this video and started practicing!
Don't give up, buddy! Rome wasn't built in a day and speed doesn't come from one day or the other. If you're hitting a plateau, try to evaluate your technique and really focus on having that right. On the other hand, as I've found out myself, don't be afraid to push yourself, and disregard technique every now and then just to see what it feels like to play faster. For me a big limiting factor was being very cramped in my left hand, having way too much tension. As soon as I addressed that, I went up 10-20 bpm. Trying to work my way up now from 130 to 140 bpm.
Wasn’t even planning to give up! But thanks for encouraging words and tips. I’m not just planning to practice this for 30 days, but until I’m satisfied with the results, even if it takes 5 years. Good luck to you too tho!
I think one of the challenges I’m having with something like this is, believe it or not, playing it at 50bpm. I guess my Brian’s and hands feel like they’re waiting eons for the one to come back around again. Lol Maybe it’s just me trying to sync with metronome when I begin practicing. Can I throw in a random German word here? How about Käsekuchen? 🙂
Ive been playing guitar for about 4 years, but was stuck in progress decided to do this exercise, and about a month and a half later im now at 150 bpm!!!!111 HELL YEA!
Day one: Aug 22, 2023 Begin at: 1:53 Stuck at: 60bpm Day two: Today Stuck at: 70bpm Day four: Aug 28th Stuck at 80 bpm Day five: Aug 29th Stuck at 90 bpm 4:07 Thanks for the great exercise, Bernth!
Day 1: 60 BPM without any problems Day 2: 70 BPM without any problems Day 3: 80 BPM with mistakes in the end Day 4: 80 BPM perfect Day 5: missed Day 6: 80 BPM with mistakes in the end Day 7: 80 BPM perfect, 90 BPM with mistakes in the end
Day one 90 bpm, but dirty. 80 bpm clean. Day two much cleaner 90 bpm, still with mistakes. Day 3: decent bpm 80, almost perfect 90 bpm, managed to do first half of bpm 100 without mistakes. Day$ 4: 90 bpm with some mistakes, done 100 bpm almost perfectly ( maybe 1 mistake), first 2 phrases of 110 bpm (my brain cant keep up with hands lol xD) day 5: 100 bpm with somewhat more mistakes (second loop last phrase cucked) but easier to manage 110 bpm (at least it not feels impossible), even pushed myself to 120 bpm and got right some first phrases. day 6: cleaner 100 bpm, 110 bpm with some mistakes at the end of first and second loop, easier to handle 120 bpm, but still dirty. day 7: way worse 100 bpm, cant handle 110 bpm, thinking about slowing tempo to 50 maybe 40 BPM and work at this speed for a while. Day8 ^ practiced at 40.50.60 bpm. day 9 sweep picking practice. day 10 skipped practicing day 11. got to 100 bpm but dirty again day 12: skipped 1 day day13: kinda meh bpm 90, awful. barely handeble 100 bpm day 14 skipped this one day 15 skipped guitar practice day 16 cleanest 90 bpm so far, but 100 bpm barely handeble (slightly better than at day 13) Summary for 2 weeeks from dirty 90 bpm to perfect 90 bpm. Gonna update my progress weekly, not daily from now on. Im back after 2 years of procrastination... Day 1 130 bpm clean Day 2 - no guitar this day. Day 3 130 bpm clean up to 150-160 dirty (left hand kinda tired in process which breaks up synchronization for me) Day 4 same as day 3 Day 5 - somehow dirty from 80-120-130 bpm, better on 140-150, semi clean on 160. Wut
Started on 22/11/2023. Day 1: 90bpm Day 2: 100bpm Day 3: 110bpm Day 4: (Gave up on this exercise, but came back to it after 2 months) 110bpm Day 5: 120bpm Day 6: Only got to 110bpm because im getting used to a new picking style Day 7: 110bpm Day 8: 110bpm, first 3 bars of 120bpm Day 9: 4 bars of 120bpm
Finally at 150 BPM after deciding to study my pick grip. Still some missing notes here and there but I finally got to this check point on day one of mastering moving my hand as little as possible and finding the right pick grip. Yall can do it too, just study how you practice and it'll work wonders
Day 1: 70 bpm, need to sync left hand better Day 2: 80 bpm easy - 90bpm abit shaky, need to work on right hand Day 3: 80-90bpm 100 is shaky - Changed up my left hand technique when holding down the notes so its easier, have to keep working on that Day 4: 90-100bpm 100 lil bit shaky - left hand technique is chilling, just need to work on pinky speed and syncing both hands 100bpm onwards Day 5: 80-100bpm 100bpm better but still shaky - spent all of today practicing syncing my hands in certain parts so its clean at 85bpm, this was a lot of help so I'm going to do the same again tomorrow but at a higher bpm possibly, I feel 110bpm is definitely doable in the next few weeks Day 6: 90-110bpm 110bpm is shaky - spent today just screwing around with higher speeds for fun, turns out I can do 110 pretty decently, going to slow it down tomorrow Day 7: Didn't practice today - Had abit of a break as I was out most of the day and tired going to be practicing tomorrow though Day 8: 100-110bpm 110 is sounding nice - Spent most of today at 110 bpm fleshing it out, only at the end realized my right hand was doing the upstrokes and downstrokes in opposite order, gonna work on that tomorrow (Also practicing less frequently as I've got some song performances coming up) Day 9: 80-100bpm - still working on the technique for up and down strokes didn't have much time for practice today Day 10-11: Not practicing all that much have performances coming up will have to pick it up from next week onwards Day? - Performance has been delayed a bunch and busy with school, performance is tomorrow looking forward to practicing alternate picking again. Kinda stopped decided to learn different things/songs because Gary Moore is just that good and I wanna play his songs.
Feb 14, 2023 I'm starting this workout; I haven't played my guitar for like 5 years. Here's my Dat 1 so far and will update it as it goes: Day 1: Started at 50, struggling on the picking pattern and tabs for about an hour and got the hang of it. After being comfortable in about an hour, went from 50 to 60pm. I struggled at 60bpm and I don't even know why. Got stuck for an hour and just decided to turn it up to 70bpm on which I think is most comfortable with me. I can go 3 bars without any mistakes. I stopped cause my fingers hurt. Will try to practice 70bpm tomorrow and see if I can up the tempo. Day 2: started at 70bpm then got comfortable to 80bpm. Tried 90bpm but can't get consistency, my right hand was getting stiff and my fingers hurt. tried to 100bpm but struggled. I'll let my fingers rest and practice 90bpm tomorrow and hit 100bpm. Day 3: Practiced slow from 80-90bpm to actually getting the hang of 100bpm. I was struggling at first because I can't figure out why my left hand fingers are so tensed, gradually discovered that I was anchoring my index finger on the neck without any reason. Relaxed a bit and practiced my finger positioning and did 100bpm. I tried 110bpm but damn, impossible I may have to start 100bpm and gradually up it to 110bpm. Day 4: Only practiced for an hour cause the blisters on my fingers ain't healed yet and it hurts like hell when playing. I was able to keep up at 110bpm (a bit sloppy though) which I thought was impossible. Can't play anymore cause my fingers hurt. I'll try to beat 110bpm tomorrow and hopefully to try 120bpm. Day 5: Was trying to practice but I felt really off and hands are not in synch. Day 6: Fingers don't hurt anymore and I figured why I was off yesterday. I was tensioning my forearm too much that it affected my picking hand. Worked on it for an hour and as soon as my forearm is tensed I stopped because its going to get sloppy anyway. I already broke my 110bpm wall and I was surprised that my first time on 120bpm was smooth but needs a little work. I'll continue to practice until all the notes are clear. I tried 130bpm, its doable but I need to work on relaxing my right arm. Day 7: practiced for about 1hr and I'm stuck at 120bpm :( I feel like 130bpm is impossible. I'll again tomorrow if there's any improvement.
I guess I'll use this space as my personal practice journal since everyone else is: DAY 1: Took a little while to get the pattern down. Felt comfortable up to about 70 bpm. Couldn't really get 80 cleanly DAY 2: Kept practicing 70 until it felt easy. Moved up to 80. Got through 90 a few times cleanly, but not consistently
29th of January 1st day: memorizing - 50 bpm 2nd day: 60 bpm 3rd day: 70 bpm 4th day: 80 bpm This already feels incredible fast for me and it is only half speed 😮 Update: 26th of February Day 8: 90 bpm Day 12: 100 bpm but not fluently as it should be
Yesterday I started out and my best was 90bpm... Just now I've reached 110 BPM, completely clean, with no picking ou left hand issues... This really is improving my playing like I've never seen before, it isn't just a regular up and down worm up exercise
I'll edit this as I go Starting this October 23rd, 2024 - After learning and practicing a bit, managed to get 90BPM, but 100BPM is too fast. October 26th: Still stuck at 100BPM, but 90 is a lot cleaner now. Nov 2nd: A lot better at 100BPM. Haven't been practicing every day as I'm suppossed to, but still improving. Something I noticed is that my left hand is out of sync with my right hand, so the notes sound "muted" because I remove the finger right as my right hand picks the string. Also had a go at 110BPM but that is totally outta reach for now. November 3rd: After a bit of warmup on 90BPM I surprised myself by getting consistent clean runs on 100BPM, and could even get rough runs on 110BPM. Neat!
Really enjoying this exercise; I first leran the first bar, up to 85 the firts day, after about 30 mns; second day added the second bar and all the rest up to 80; now doing 100; I find I like to go back to 50 and up to my max several time helps to memorize the notes and fingers movements. I noticed the guitarist on the video is very economical on his gesture; so I am learning to control my hands. on the 3rd day I am now doing 110 relatively well, and manage 120...I am pleased; I feel my left hand muscles burning a bit; I do 2x10 mns each day; today, snday doing well at 112 bpm; now using the metronome and going up with small increments; monday 117; tuesday 120 , but not very clean
Bernth I am subscribed as you wished and I gotta say that you deff have the best videos for teaching guitar. I am happy I found your channel it has helped me a lot! Thanks for the lessons man! 🤘
A tip! slow the play back speed down when you're first learning it... not just to memorize the lines, but to also get more diverse BMPS. I'd suggest starting it at 25 BPM, or 0.5 play back speed. I like to keep this at 0.5 until it gets to 100 BPM, which would get to be 50BPM. This helped me learn a little bit faster because you can get more diverse BPM's, allowing for your preferable speed to slowly work its way up -- in other words, instead of going up ten BPM per level, it would go up 5 mph per level.
starting as a complete beginner, practicing on acoustic guitar (english is not my first language, sorry for mistakes) 26.08 started at 25BPM, stopped at 55 BPM because while playing I started picking the wrong strings 27.08 | 70 BPM 28.08 | 70 BPM
Started 07.10.23 day 1: learned exercise, starting practice day 2: 50 bpm day 3: 60 bpm stragling day 4: Sometimes miss notes on 70 bpm. On 80 bpm my strokes no longer consistant, I play air notes often day 5: I've noticed that my grip changed slightly, hitting 70 clearly. Cant keep up with 80 day 6-7: beat 80 bpm day 7-10 stuck at 90

Thank you.. 🎸
Ok, I will sure enroll this course on patreon.. I'm learning through your video tutorials.. Thanks.. 🎸
Hi Bernth, would you like to translate your videos into spanish? I think it could be a good idea for your channel. What do you think?
Day 1, 80 BPM 😞
Stuck 90-110...but, this is working!
Older solo's I know sound cleaner and I am adding in new flourishes with these techniques
Improved picking technique, improved finger discipline, not having to play at what would have been my max speed, and more. These workouts really improve every style, and your playing in general. Can't wait to rock this one for the next 30 days and see what happens. Keep up the great training and great videos,
Cheers
Thanks for sharing, man, this was quite motivational
I've had this experience too. So happy I found this channel. I'm self taught for years and it has really given me the motivation to practice and develop more. It can be frustrating but also really exciting to see yourself progress. Like when you go learn a new David Glimour solo or something and realise it's coming to you way easier than it used to.

@@thebushmaster0544holy shit 90 beats per millisecond is wild 💀💀
December 08 : 0bpm. Just memorizing the pattern is a challenge 🙂.
LOL I had this same issue. Turn the video speed down to 0.5x and learn it at 25 BPM, that's what helped me get it down
My thoughts hahaha
it helps me to write it in my tab book so you dony have to keep pausing the vid
i slowed it down and played along reading the tabs as i go
This is exactly how I felt...
2:34 60bpm
3:09 70bpm
3:40 80bpm
4:07 90bpm
4:32 100bpm
Started on 19/12/21
Day 1: Started today at 50 bpm
Day 2: Reached 100 bpm but my left hand stopped cooperating
Day 3: I can now play 100bpm with much more ease, I struggle a bit at 110bpm
Day 4: I can play 110 bpm (not very cleanly tho) but my hands stop working at 120bpm
Day 5: Still stuck at 120 bpm, I can now play 110 more easily tho
Day 6: Almost no change since last time, still stuck at 120
Day 7: I went on vacation without my guitar and I haven't practised in over a week so I am back at 100bpm
Day 8: 110bpm comes off pretty easily but still not able to go up to 120
Day 9: Almost able to do 120, still not completely tho
Day 10: At 120bpm, 130 seems impossible
Day 11: My hands felt tired today, I only got to 110
Day 12: Back at 120bpm, still not clean
Day 13: Fell back to 110 again
Day 14: Still can't get 120 clean
Day 15: I stopped practising this for a while to focus more on improv but I am back to finish it this time. Currently at 110bpm
Day 16: Pulled off 120 bpm and close to reaching 130bpm. I aim to finish the challenge by day 30
Day 17: I can now play 130 bpm but it sounds kinda sloppy
Day 18: Still at 130bpm although now it sounds cleaner
Day 19: No improvements since yesterday, still can't reach 140
Day 20: Getting closer to 140
Day 21: I can kind of play 140, although I miss a few notes
Day 22 : No major improvements since yesterday, although I feel more comfortable playing at that tempo
Day 23: I can finally play 140 without missing any notes, but I still gotta work on playing it cleaner
Day 24: Still at 140, 150 is too fast
Day 25: Reached 150, but I miss a few notes now and then
Day 26: Haven't made any major improvements since last time
Day 27: Didn't have the best practise session today, my timing seemed off
Day 28: I missed a few sessions as I was really busy this week, I barely reached 150 today
Day 29: I've been pretty busy lately so I didn't have that much time to practise. I am still at 150
Day 30: I can keep up with 150 although it sounds awful
Yo Yo! Where is the update? Day 15?

Finally.. after half year I'm able to complete the entire exercise! Thank You Bernth so much for your work :)
Brilliant - congratulations!

just managed to play along 160BPM after 6 months
How long were you play before the lesson? I just started 3 weeks ago and trying to gauge the timeline.
My third day came on "sloppy 150"
@@mabblers20 years
After two hours non stop practicing, I'm finally stuck at 100 BPM. I'll try to do better tomorrow! Thanks for this exercise Bernth :)
Awesome, great job! 🙂🤘
09/12 : Okay 100 BPM done, next step, 110!
How's your progress today?
@@KusyaViktor Hey! I can play it at 110 BPM cleanly, and I almost succeed at 120 ;) Are you training on this exercice too?
@@killianhut Every sleep it will get better, brain needs time :).
My hands and fingers seems to be talking to me for the first time
9 Feb 2024: been practising this exercise for almost 2 weeks.
Starting 15/06/22
10-20 mins a day
Day 1: 80 bpm
Day 2: 85 bpm
Day 3: 95 bpm
Day 4: 95 bpm
Day 5: 95 bpm
Day 6: 85 bpm (slowed down so I can play it clean, I was forcing too much through mistakes and not improving)
I had to travel, so I didn't play guitar for 5 days
Day 7: 85 bpm
Day 8: 90 bpm
Day 9: 90 bpm
Day 10: 100 bpm
Day 11: 100 bpm
Day 12: 100 bpm
Day 13: 105 bpm
Day 14: 110 bpm (Struggling to be consistent, i didn't practice for a few days, but today i practice over 40min to beat the speed, i started at 70 bpm and focused on keeping both hands very relaxed and getting clean sound)
Day 15: 110 bpm
Day 16: 115 bpm
Day 17: 120 bpm
Day 18: 120 bpm
how are you now?
Started at 50 bpm. Up to 90 bpm after memorizing the pattern and practicing for 15 minutes. Going to keep practicing because the faster I pushed, the more I started noticing picking deficiencies. Thank you for this exercise, Bernth. It's definitely helping me see my lazy habits, and forcing me to improve.
I did it! I made it all the way to the end of the video!
Now let's start practicing!
3:10 - 70BPM
3:41 - 80BPM
4:07 - 90BPM
4:32 - 100BPM
4:53 - 110BPM
5:13 - 120BPM
5:31 - 130BPM
5:48 - 140BPM
6:03 - 150BPM
6:17 - 160BPM
Does it matter, note value? Playing 64s at 70 or even these patterns in 32 at 65 make you go psychotic.
god
@@Tybren Hell yeah man, if you stay consistent I’m sure you can definitely reach the higher BPMs! Good luck, I got 100% faith in you bro 👊
80 bpm at day 4 - I´ve been playing guitar for about 1,5 years and this already helped a lot to improve my alternate picking technique, Thank you for your Tutorials ^^

Day 2: 70 bpm consistently
Day 3: -
Day 4: 75 bpm
Day 5: 75 bpm
Day 6: 80 bpm (barely)
Day 7: 80 bpm
Day 8: 85 bpm
Day 9: -
Day 10: -
Day 11: 80 bpm
After 3 months: 100 bpm

How much practice per day?
Nice I am struggling with 100bpm sometimes I can do it other times my hand is too tired
@@a1ru958you have too much tension in your hand probably I can do 100bpm pretty clean now
I got from 90bpm to 150 after 10 days of 90 mins per day practice
Day one: Just started learning the chromatic for this exercise (50)
Day two: learned to play 60 bpm cleanly, can just get to 70 bpm
Day three: went to a friends so nothing
Day four: did 60 and 70 cleanly, can do 80 semi cleanly.
Day five: practiced polishing skills up and BARELY got to 90 after non stop practicing for 1.25 hours twice. Already feeling the improvement thanks Bernth!
Day 6: 100 bpm (sloppy)
Day 7: took in person lessons and wasn’t able to practice this exercise
Day 8: tried to slow it down and improve my playing quality (90)
Day 9: can play 90 cleanly, working on 100
Days 10-11: unable to practice
Day 12: can cleanly do 100, 110 is manageable but could be better
Day 13: cleaning up 110, 120 unclean
Day 14: still cleaning 110
Day 15: satisfied with 110, picking cleanly at 120 is tough for me but like 110, I think I can get it with time
Day 16: 120 is decent, gonna try 130 when my wrists aren’t dying 😅 bc I practiced a lot today
Day 17: 130 is okay, 140 is choppy
Day 18: decided to slow it down again at 130
Day 19: think I hit my first roadblock 140 still challenging
Essentially days 20-23: kept practicing until I could get past 140
Day 24: 150 is manageable, could be better
Day 24: improved 150
Day 26: 160 doesn’t sound terrible actually, just some minor adjustments may be needed
Days 26-31: I’ve just been doing this exercise on and off, 160 sounds pretty good so I’d say I’d completed the challenge
Some tips for new people: no need to hold the pick too tightly, being relatively relaxed but controlled is the sweet spot!
Keep going! :D You know you're doing it right if your wrists are dead. No pain no gain
For how many years have you been playing before practicing this?
Tks for the tips, helped a lot!!

Couldn't get through the exercise
Day 2: 50BPM - Pretty chuffed
Day 3: 80BPM - This routine is even helping with my sightreading
Day 4: Away from home, no chance of practice
Day 5: Still Away from home
Day 6: 90BPM - I keep catching myself slipping into open hand and not supporting my fretting hand with my thumb.
Day 7: onto 100bpm
Day 8 - 50(ish): This is still part of my daily warm-up routine. 110bpm has become the comfort spot for warming up. I've shifted my learning goals to more theory-based development, but will revisit this soon and push to improve my speed!
Stuck at 120 bpm, that is my stuck tempo since pretty much, the beginning of times.
Thanks for the teaching, you really rock
It's cool how even though this has been up for 2 years, it's still helping guitarists daily! Mad respect.

Day 2: 70bpm but not fully clean
August 17, 2023 -
DAY 1: Currently at Level 6 100BPM (4:32)
DAY 2: I can now play 110BPM (4:54), I'm gonna try to go 120BPM (5:13).
Day 2.5: I can play 120BPM but it sounds so sloppy
Day 3: Back to 80BPM, after listening to my recording, I realized how bad my technique was so I tried to make sure every plucked note is consistently good
Day 4. Back to 120 with a slightly cleaner technique
Day 5. Still stuck at 120, trying to improve my technique
Day 6: Took a break and tried jamming to a backing track, I definitely saw a little improvement with my alternate picking.
Day 7: I'm gonna try to get myself used to 130 BPM (5:31), then try to clean everything
December 13: 50bpm
May 5: 140bpmn (not perfect tho)
May 6:150 bpm
June 1: Perfected 140 bpm 150bpm almost sounds perfect, just started with 160bpm
June 20:160 bpm (not perfect tho)
September 1, 2023: Came to understand that my picking technique is ass, start over once again with the correct picking technique
September 25: grinding 120 bpm atm
October 28: 140 bpm sounds kinda okay, but not perfect
Day one, practiced at least 2 hours and stuck at 90bpm. Will try to beat this tomorrow. I’ve been playing a little over 2 years and just now getting serious about developing my skills and technique instead of just learning more songs. Thanks for the challenge Bernth!
Day 2, got through 100bpm and stuck on 110
Started several days ago. Bit of a backstory - can't shred to save my life and got horrible technique with years of bad habits that I'm now trying to correct, "flying pinky" being the biggest offender, so I'm also trying to do routines to fix those at the same time I'm working on this.
Day 1: Trying to learn and get through the whole thing in free tempo without forgetting what note comes next xD
Day 2: Starting to get the hang of 50 BPM without stumbling, pattern memorizing issues for now as opposed to techniques.
Replying to make sure you have not quit
Thank you!!
Well I can play level 4 today, I need to learn how to minimize my left hand movement, I feel that's holding me back at the moment
I can get part way through level 5 now
Any updates?
My diary c:
15.01 - comfortable 70bpm. The goal now is to automatize the pattern and focus on swift switches between notes - remove as much unnecessary movement as possible.
This was much more fun than I expected! Thanks Bernth! May 26, stuck at 100 bpm!
Gonna spend about an hour a day practicing this, I’ll move up BPM when I can play it 7 times in a row without messing up
Day 1 - Spent most of today getting familiar with the exercise. Struggling with the chromatics at the end and the pinkie reach to the 10th fret. Nonetheless, I got to 90 bpm today. Looking forward to this challenge!!

Day 4 (after 2 days break): 90bpm very sloppy and difficult after the break
Day 5: I'm confident with the speed for 90bpm, but it's still very sloppy.
Day 3 23.9.22 - 90
Day 4 24.9.22 - Struggled to get to 90.
Day 5 26.9.22 - 100!
Day 6 27.9.22 - 100, didn't have much time to spend this day.
Day 7 28.9.22 - 100
Day 8 29.9.22 - 110... can almost do 120. My hand, wrist and forearm have been sore all this time from this exercise. I feel like my playing is becoming more precise overall.. really quickly.
Day 9 14.10.22 - Haven't been playing guitar everyday. I was probably overdoing it. 130 today!
Day 10 16.10.22 - 120 badly. Fatigued from playing a lot of guitar the last few days.
Reached 180bpm on the second day. Then realized that it’s quarter notes, and four notes per beat 🤣 so I’m actually not even playing at 50bpm.
I’m still proud of the progress I made as I am a new guitarist and can feel my hands grow stronger and more coordinated. I will continue practicing and see where I get lol 😂
4 Days: I’ve finally reached 50 bpm but I can’t play it perfectly every time. Enjoying this exercise as it’s making my finger strong and coordinated

Day 1 Start (March 6, 2023)
110 bpm clean | 120 sloppy
Day 4: Can hit 120 (sloppy and slightly tense)
Day 11: I can finally hit 160 consistently and clean with no major issue.
Now the next step is flight of the bumblebee at 240. :D
@Strat Abuser Thanks for your input. Mentioning some time targets also puts it in perspective. I'll remember your words...
What an amazing speed run. I was kind of bored with the same alternative picking exersizes. This is really cool and i do love a challenge. :-). 120BPM for me so far. 🤘
June 3rd, 2023, Day 2. Stuck at 90 bpm.
Didn't comment the first day, but was stuck at 70.
PROGRESS!
Thank you, Bernth, for encouraging all of us.

@@vicent5065 Thanks for checking up on me. I've been steadily making progress. Although not getting to practice as much as I want. I'm stuck at 100bpm still but it's progress. It's difficult but manageable and only a little sloppy. Still cleaning up before I move on. wish me luck.
@@drcidd8153 do ahead my friend, you can do it
for a few weeks i was stuck at 90 and i've been practicing this for about 3 weeks now and i'm slowly getting comfortable with 120 bpm its still not as clean as i would like but i understand its a part of the process. Excited to so where i'll be in the next few weeks!

has this exercise helped your all round playing, im trying to speed up my jamming over backing tracks using a pentatonic scale in all positions. would this exercise help me achieve this short term goal?

Start: 07.11.2024
Day 1: 50bpm: after the first try, I noticed that I can follow the pattern quite nicely, but at some points I definitely need to practice more. I'll update later if I got any better after practice. - yeah no still need practice lmao
Day 2: see ya tomorrow, 50bpm, also because I was wondering how long others practice; I practice this about 15 minutes a day at the moment. Of course I could do it longer, but I feel like 15 minutes is a healthy practice time
Day 3: I did improve, but I'm still not happy with the tones. Sometimes I accidentally mute a string with my pinky, because it's lying too flat on the strings. Of course I could just aim to be faster, but I want to get the base right, so still 50bpm
Day 4: maybe I'm too hard on myself, but I really want to have clear tones - still 50bpm
Day 5: I need to pause this challenge, because I realised something.
12-12: Starting to try out 150 bpm, still quite some mistakes
13-12 140 bpm. Not a great day today
18-12 Have still been hanging around 140 bpm.
How is it going?
@@topaziscringeverycringe8532 Still trying 150 BPM every now and then. Have been focusing more on technique in the last few days and 140 BPM is at least more consistent now.
@@topaziscringeverycringe8532 I've been out of it for quite a while sadly. I'm picking it back up again as of today. With some determination, I should be able to get to 150 bpm more consistently. 160 bpm still seems totally crazy to me.
@@topaziscringeverycringe8532Not bad actually, almost done with the challenge!
@@topaziscringeverycringe8532 Still trying! :D
I'm an absolute beginner when it comes to shred guitar and guitar in general. Here's my practice journey:
- Day 1: 90bpm safe, 100 possible but with a few mistakes
- Day 2: 100bpm has become more fluent.
[more to come (hopefully 😅)]
Thank you so much Bernth for the amazing video content!
Greetings from Germany 😃
Once I finally made it past 100 I started ZOOMIN
After a day, I’m stuck at 90. I’m completely humbled. I thought I was much faster than that. I’m gonna keep practicing. Thanks Bernth
Started 4/29/23
A little on my background.
Day 5 - missed
Day 6 - 70bpm improved.
WEEK BREAK (went on vacation)
Day 8 - 90bpm!
I consider myself a slow learner so this will be interesting
Day 1 : Can barely do the 50bpm version, it's not really because of the speed but because I need to memorize the notes well
Day 2 : Could do the 50bpm as soon as I woke up, managed to do 70 bpm after 40 minutes of practice
Day 3 : Cleaned up 70 bpm and can do 80 bpm pretty sloppy
Started Sep 4th, 2023
Day 1: Having trouble with the pattern, memorized about half of it
Day 2: Memorized most of the pattern
Day 3: Finally got the pattern down, consistent enough with 50bpm
Day 4: I can keep up with 60bpm with occasional mistakes. Don’t have much time to play today so I’ll attempt 70bpm tomorrow
Day 5: I can keep up with 70, 80 is very difficult
Day
Day 8: It has been a few days. Something I realized is that I need to work on my picking technique. I’ll
update again when I make more progress
Day 9: With my new picking technique I can keep up with 70, the problem I’m facing is I can’t seem to get any speed ‘perfect’.
Day 10: Been making less mistakes and am more motivated now. I’m able to do 70 relatively consistently, but 80 is still a struggle.
Day 11: I can keep up with 80, but it is not easy
Day ??: It's been about a month since I last tried this.

I played acoustic for 2 years-ish? Been doing fingerstyle so it's my first time using a pick
Day: 1 - 70 bpms, not clean but I can hit the notes at the tempo
Day: 2 - 80 bpms (but not clean)
Day: 3 - Back to 70 bpms no sleep (had work)
Day 0: Thinking about starting tomorrow 🤔
Day 1: 50 BPM with a bit of discomfort.
Day 2: 80 BPM inconsistently
Day 3: 80 BPM Still difficult
Day 4: 80 BPM Starting to feel comfortable
Day 5: 90 BPM feels impossible
Day 6: 90 BPM Felt doable today
Day 7: 100 BPM can't play all the notes yet.
Day 8: 90 BPM Still needs work
Day 9: 90 BPM I'm starting to blame my cheap guitar and picks 😑
Day 10: 90 BPM Almost there
Day 11: 90 BPM Still feels difficult
Day 12: 90 BPM Fells doable
Day 13: Missed almost 2 weeks( stuck at 90)
try to feel if you right arm is tensed. If it is tensed then I recommend you stop and relax your forearm.

Day 1: Had trouble to begin with but after 20m got to 30 bpm with little errors still feels stiff though
Day 2: (took a break over the weekend) Did about 10m today and improvement was crazy think alot of it was remembering the riff, can do 50bpm now with some errors think imma stick here and focus on correctly picking technique for a couple days before trying to go higher
Day 3: Stayed on 50BPM Doing a lot better feeling better, still feel a little stiff and missed a couple notes with picking hand couple times
Day 4: 60BPM!
Day 6: I can sense this is a sticking point Still feel stiff and forced on 70BPM although potentially a little less (need to focus on making sure my fretting hand is making as little movement as possible As I keep lifting my pinky waay of the strings)
Day 7: 70BPM slightly less forced
Day 8: returned after the flu 😵💫 70BPM but making mistakes, need to get back into rhythm
Took a huge break to focus on music theory lmao

Day 9: 80BPM (noticed my trouble is with going back up the scale my fretting hand has trouble removing the fingers one at a time with proper technique

@@colgate4646 Yea, I’m also there around 90, but I feel that I’m improving so just keep on practicing don’t give up.

Sorry been very busy just continued again today
Day 1: 70 bpm, need to sync left hand better
Day 2: 80 bpm easy - 90bpm abit shaky, need to work on right hand
Day 3: 80-90bpm 100 is shaky - Changed up my left hand technique when holding down the notes so its easier, have to keep working on that
Day 4: 90-100bpm 100 lil bit shaky - left hand technique is chilling, just need to work on pinky speed and syncing both hands 100bpm onwards
Day 5: 80-100bpm 100bpm better but still shaky - spent all of today practicing syncing my hands in certain parts so its clean at 85bpm, this was a lot of help so I'm going to do the same again tomorrow but at a higher bpm possibly, I feel 110bpm is definitely doable in the next few weeks
Day 6: 90-110bpm 110bpm is shaky - spent today just screwing around with higher speeds for fun, turns out I can do 110 pretty decently, going to slow it down tomorrow
Day 7: Didn't practice today - Had abit of a break as I was out most of the day and tired going to be practicing tomorrow though
Day 8: 100-110bpm 110 is sounding nice - Spent most of today at 110 bpm fleshing it out, only at the end realized my right hand was doing the upstrokes and downstrokes in opposite order, gonna work on that tomorrow (Also practicing less frequently as I've got some song performances coming up)
Day 9: 80-100bpm - still working on the technique for up and down strokes didn't have much time for practice today
Day 10-11: Not practicing all that much have performances coming up will have to pick it up from next week onwards
Day? - Performance has been delayed a bunch and busy with school, performance is tomorrow looking forward to practicing alternate picking again.
Kinda stopped decided to learn different things/songs because Gary Moore is just that good and I wanna play his songs.

I'm starting this workout; I haven't played my guitar for like 5 years. Here's my Dat 1 so far and will update it as it goes:
Day 1: Started at 50, struggling on the picking pattern and tabs for about an hour and got the hang of it.
I guess I'll use this space as my personal practice journal since everyone else is:
DAY 1: Took a little while to get the pattern down. Felt comfortable up to about 70 bpm. Couldn't really get 80 cleanly
DAY 2: Kept practicing 70 until it felt easy. Moved up to 80. Got through 90 a few times cleanly, but not consistently
29th of January
1st day: memorizing - 50 bpm
2nd day: 60 bpm
3rd day: 70 bpm
4th day: 80 bpm
This already feels incredible fast for me and it is only half speed 😮
Update: 26th of February
Day 8: 90 bpm
Day 12: 100 bpm but not fluently as it should be
Yesterday I started out and my best was 90bpm... Just now I've reached 110 BPM, completely clean, with no picking ou left hand issues... This really is improving my playing like I've never seen before, it isn't just a regular up and down worm up exercise
I woke up this morning got my guitar and practiced your workout now im on 50bpm! Big improvement for me!
I'll edit this as I go
Starting this October 23rd, 2024 - After learning and practicing a bit, managed to get 90BPM, but 100BPM is too fast.
I noticed the guitarist on the video is very economical on his gesture; so I am learning to control my hands. on the 3rd day I am now doing 110 relatively well, and manage 120...I am pleased; I feel my left hand muscles burning a bit; I do 2x10 mns each day; today, snday doing well at 112 bpm; now using the metronome and going up with small increments; monday 117; tuesday 120 , but not very clean
this genuinly helped me a lot, ive been doing this for about a week and i went from 100bpm to 130bpm
This helped me learn a little bit faster because you can get more diverse BPM's, allowing for your preferable speed to slowly work its way up -- in other words, instead of going up ten BPM per level, it would go up 5 mph per level.
starting as a complete beginner, practicing on acoustic guitar (english is not my first language, sorry for mistakes)
26.08 started at 25BPM, stopped at 55 BPM because while playing I started picking the wrong strings
27.08 | 70 BPM
28.08 | 70 BPM
Thats very good for begginer! Never give up
Started 07.10.23
day 1: learned exercise, starting practice
day 2: 50 bpm
day 3: 60 bpm stragling
day 4: Sometimes miss notes on 70 bpm. On 80 bpm my strokes no longer consistant, I play air notes often
day 5: I've noticed that my grip changed slightly, hitting 70 clearly. Cant keep up with 80
day 6-7: beat 80 bpm
day 7-10 stuck at 90
28.12.23 - barely 130 and stuck at 140
14.01.24 - stuck at 150
23.02 - easily doing 130, almost 140
