Hey there! My husband and I used to sell vinyl decals and do screen printing on t-shirts and stuff. We used to have a huge graphtec cutter, and it really presented the exact same problems as a cricut. It wouldn't pick up registration marks all the time, would randomly cut off-center, stuff like that. It's just like having a huge cricut, honestly, except LESS user-friendly 😂 My husband and I decided that if we ever went back into graphics, we'd 100% invest in an all-in-one printer/cutter that does things in one go and is capable of printing UV-safe vinyl stickers as well as paper stickers. I hope that's helpful in some way! I wish you all the best and admire your desire to employ more people!!

This is going to be a long comment, but worth the read. I have my own sticker business and have experience with Cricut and Silhouette.
When I first started my business I had a Cricut. About 2 months in, the print-and-cut sensor broke and I needed a replacement. Cricut’s turnaround time for my replacement was 3 weeks. I obviously couldn’t close my business down for 3 weeks, so I used my savings to buy a Silhouette.
When I say that I was taken aback by the quality that the silhouette produces, I mean it. The software is a pain in the ass to use sometimes and can be unreliable. It is absolutely not as user-friendly as Cricut is, but the quality and the speed that it cuts, was worth it to me.
Until about a month ago, after 4 months of use, my silhouette became so unreliable that it was unusable. Silhouette’s customer support is the worst I have ever experienced. They only have e-mail and it takes 4-7 days in between them responding to my each email. It was frankly unacceptable and infuriating. If anything ever goes wrong with your machines, don’t count on silhouette to be reliable. They make you pay shipping costs for your replacement machines and have to “verify” your machine first before they even ship out a replacement. The whole process was abhorrent.
Also being said, you will have to reformat EVERY CUT FILE you have. Every single one needs to be changed for the Silhouette or Cricut. This took me WEEKS to change everything.
One thing silhouette does have on Cricut is the customization. You can change every single aspect of your cutting which is super nice. Plus your print and cut size is 7.5” x 9.5” instead of 6.75” x 9.25” on the Cricut.
Now having to use my replacement Cricut while I wait for my new Silhouette, it feels like I’m watching paint dry with my Cricut. It cuts so slow and I have to allot so much time into creating that I didn’t have to before.
Each machine has their drawbacks equally. In my opinion, neither are as amazing as everyone makes them out to be. I prefer silhouette. It seems more for designers and artists instead of Cricut craft-mommies. It really just comes down to preference.
I think you should go with an industry standard cutting machine instead of the desktop sizes. Your business is growing at such an astounding rate and you may have to keep upgrading and upgrading. You might as well just make that huge investment so you’re set for years to come. 🖤

I work in a sign shop and Rolands are the large format printers we use! They are honestly so amazing! If you run into problems you can’t fix yourself, there are Roland experts that will come and troubleshoot for you as well. I worked for three years in a shop and now currently 6.5 months at a new shop and I taught them how to perf cut their decals so we don’t have to hand cut them into squares. They always thought you had to print it on one and then bring it to the plotter but the printer can do it all on itself! I would recommend a separate blade for perf cutting as that can dull faster and you can keep a more consistent force for the regular cut and perf cut blades. If you laminate, you may also want to think of purchasing a laminator machine but honestly Avery and oracal vinyl is so durable and used in all winter and summer conditions. Sun will eventually fade them but that’s years down the road. But there is vinyl that has glitter in it that you can use as a laminate and for a cool effect so that’s another sweet thing you can look into as well :)

I am a small sticker store owner, and I strongly prefer the silhouette software over Cricket, and silhouette has many more options and cut jobs and other functionality.
I’ve seen some really large stores use silhouette and they seem to do great, but there are a lot of silhouette users including myself that actually have really frustrating ongoing problems with our machines, as well as end up with a lot of misscut or “almost perfect“ sticker sheets. but there isn’t really any other competition unless we scale up to commercial cutting equipment.
So for me, silhouette is the best of what options I have, but I definitely wish there were better options. At your scale, commercial cutting equipment might be better.
I’m totally curious to see what other store owners might recommend in the comments here.

Yes, yes! I moved from Cricket to Silouhette and it's much more reliable! Plus there is a 24" version now. I'm a tiny shop in comparison but I've cut hundreds of stickers on mine over the last year, still going strong. :)

@@Lowrunnn I also like that you can print and cut from jpegs. I have done so many personal gifts with that option. Lol
Also the software is so similar to inkscape and ( oops, forgot..)
It's user friendly and you don't have to use proprietary designs. I can use everything I design in my silhouette with my laser cutter as long as I save it as an svg. Super excited about that.
@katnipp I think if you watch some videos on silhouette you'd go with the cutter. I haven't ordered the newest one because I have no space right now and learning my laser so I'm pretty taken up with that at the moment

If you are having trouble with " miscuts" on you silhouette, try putting it near a better light source, i have a small clip on light i use. Sometimes the silhouette just needs a bit of extra light to read the registration marks

    • @MariW736
      @MariW736 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@HeavenLeeMadeOnEtsy thank you very much! I recently improved the lighting and that did help, as well as extending the feet, and switching to the less-bendy Cricut-style mats instead of the thinner clear silhouette-style one. Altogether, it helped quite a bit, but it’s still not really reliable. But I’m down to only 25%-ish miscuts most of the time which is a humongous improvement. 💗💗

I've been watching a lot of Simply Sallie's DIY vlogs and replays of her live Q&A's lately (she does a lot of vinyl decals, wood signs etc for Etsy) and she raves about her Silhouette (I think she has a few). She said the software is more user-friendly and it has much more functionality than Cricut. Many of her viewers seem to agree! P.S. Love your vlogs, Katnipp! I started my Etsy store just this week (I hand-sew little pillows) and am working on adding listings and ramping up. So much to do! Ahh. Serious upgrades. I would recommend that you locate a Print Sales Agent. They can advise you best. They are also a great a finding quality second hand machines from those continuing to upgrade. They can also get you great prices and access to quality paper products, ink, etc.
Because they are constantly in and out providing products, they know what is available and can give you contacts for better pricing on machines.
I bought a photo polymer stamp machine at eighty percent off. The company no longer used it because they ramped up their company. It was in perfect working order.
They could also help you to access the vinyl sheets you want and help get things moving forward sooner.
A good Print Agent can be your best friend in your business.
They can give you feedback on all the available machines in your area.
They are also called Print Brokers in the USA. But, calling a Print Shop, a Paper Company, or an area Newspaper could get a name.
So psyched to see you doing so well. Cheering you on from the sidelines.
    Happy Holidays.

Hi Katnip, finally I can help you!!! Roland Bn-20 is definitely the way to go, I have owned Roland machines for almost 10 years and I love the Roland. The larger one is great if you are wanting to print quickly and larger items, the Bn-20 can only print on one speed (high quality) but to be honest, I don't think you would ever print on a faster speed because you pride yourself in high quality so I don't think you would be hindered by this. Another thing to note, is that on any large format printer, there will be a slight wastage of media, so don't turn off machine until you are completed with your prints for the day as it rolls back to your last print.

  • @hiddentidesgaming
    @hiddentidesgaming 3 ปีที่แล้ว

We had one of the industrial printers from Roland's in my high school for Graphic Design program! It was amazing to have, but the heads can get clogged easy depending on which one you get... Thankfully there are repair services you can have someone come out and check things out in case you are too worried about messing it up yourself, has a cleaning setting for the heads, or you can manually clean them, or replace the heads. The Ink cartridges for them are refillable and last a VERY long time. If you decide to use one of the ones that take vinyl on a long roll, I highly suggest a good chunk of space for it and maybe add some caution tape around on the bottom just as a "safety zone" and maybe a mat near the ink cartridge area in case you may be a lil messy with ink refilling. The machine was super easy to learn how to use as you use a USB transfer system, but I believe some of them have a computer hookup now if that is your preferred method. It wouldn't hurt to call Roland and ask them about their different products as they have always been very helpful with figuring out problems or learning about what would fit best for your services. We used ours for full wall vinyls, banners, signs, stickers, posters. They are able to handle both thick and thin materials and switching between them. Color test printing will be your BEST FRIEND with these machines!

You can send files to the software from illustrator or photoshop if those are the programs you use. I would definitely recommend the cutter, I did a lot of research and Mac compatibility was my top priority and a lot of the other cutters weren’t compatible. I have a cricut which is wireless, I’m not sure if the cameo is but that’s the only con, it needs to be connected to you mac with a long usb cord. I think you should definitely look into it. I used to work with a big industrial Mimaki printer at my previous workplace. The model I worked with could print up to A1 size and you could change the cut pressure, so it works well for prints and stickers. It couldn't however print double sided, but you could at least print and cut with one machine. It could hold a large roll of paper on the back and you could change out what type of paper you were using. For example I switched between poster paper, sticker paper and pull-up banner paper which was quite thick and almost like plastic. I even printed some window stickers. If you have any problems they have engineers that can come out and sort the printer for you as well. I highly recommend one of these printers if you plan on doing large batches in house. The software is easy to work with too and uses a plug in for Illustrator.

But then it's as you have said before keeping costs down. I used to work with A0 size plotters and they are quite a job to handle inks are expensive and paper had to come on rolls. Maybe have a member of the team simply print and packing stickers to ramp them up so like a specialist working in the circuit corner. Hi! :) I used to work with a roland versa works machine. It had 12 ink cartridges and it printed up to 137cm rolls (sticker, paper, banners etc) which are a bit heavy to put on the machine. I was alone and it was a bit difficult but for you it will be easy as you have people there to help you. So the printer was very big and if you want to know more I can search through my papers and find the model. It will probably be an old model but I'm sure there is a newer version. You will need to contact a representative technician who knows everything about roland so as to guide you through the set up and most importantly the cleaning process which you will have to do once a week or so, depending on the workload you'll have, how many times you'll use it and so on. It's important to keep the heads clean because if I'm not mistaken they are very expensive if they break and they are sensitive, very sensitive! I worked with it for 6 years and I learnt a few tricks and stuff but I'm not an expert. I just learnt from operating it. The quality it's excellent. There were many options to choose from for printing such as for photos, vectors, text and image and so on. It print and cuts stickers. Not paper, not banners. Only stickers. Also you can use smaller rolls of paper, sticker etc. such as 60cm, 100cm and so on. Or you can put a scrap piece of sticker and you will measure it with the machine so it knows the dimensions of your sticker and print and cut within those dimensions. As for now I do not work with that machine as it wasn't mine but if you can afford it I would recommend it 100% if there isn't something better that is. Also I worked with a smaller plotter as well. That was only for cut stickers. Not printed stickers. It was good for 3D light-box signs and so on. I hope I helped you a bit! If you have questions or need more information please tell me. Keep up the great work!!! :) xxx

Rolands are great! I worked in a personalization shop for a while and they had one! It was a two in one so it used to print the stickers first, let them dry a few seconds and then it would rewind the paper for the cutting! It was so great, it NEVER missed a spot or got any cut wrong! I didn't even know circuits, silhouettes or other small plotter existed until a few months ago when I bought a silhouette, and although it is great to be able to do this sorts of things at home Rolands are just the best!

Hi Sweetie, We have a Roland cutter 24” which was our 1st cutter then moved to a Roland BN20 if I remember correctly, we had metallic ink in it so I was so excited but what I soon realised what a huge mistake we had made the metallic did not shine in my opinion (and many customers) it didn’t matter how many different surfaces we tried on some substrates it even rubbed off. So we moved to a Roland print and cut 54” 5 years ago, then our last upgraded was to a 60” Roland TruVis print and cut. We now run with white ink too which is amazing as I can do clear stickers too. You made me laugh when you said you can do a design in the morning and have 200 stickers that same afternoon ....... you would have 200 3inch stickers in about 20 minutes. So you can imagine you need a lot of work order/returning customers to run this type of machine as in my opinion (also the Roland engineers) these machines work better if you can keep them running so the ink lines don’t get dried up. Which is why so many businesses do farm their work out. We have white ink and had no problems even though we had read reviews where people did have problems we just give the ink a shake once every 3 days. We do have a service contract on the machine which we pay £1,000.00 per year for this covers servicing and a percentage off any new parts except a new print head this in my opinion is a must as we can get an engineer the very next day is needed so it keeps us running. The inks cost roughly £100.00+ VAT each colour although the white is more expensive, you will also need cleaning pouch too. The printer has to be plugged into the power socket so that it can do the cleaning cycles throughout the day and night....it’s quite annoying as this is when your ink gets pushed through to the waste bottle but it is all done by the machine to try to keep it clean. Also if you did go down this route you must be aware of the fumes that this type of printer/ink will give off you will need good ventilation when printing especially full colour prints. I’m sure you will have fun looking for your new machines, Feel free to ask if you need any advice I will try to help. We wish you all the best for the future 🥰

I have a Roland BN-20 that I use for print and cut car decals and stickers.
The only negative to the BN-20 is that it's sloooowwwwww. Compared to the more expensive Roland models, it's a bit of a snail.
Don't let that put you off though, it will certainly improve your workflow and your product range. There's loads of media available for them from T-Shirt vinyl to poster paper, sticker paper etc. You can nest a number of print cut jobs in versaworks, start them off and go home. They'll be printed and cut for you in the morning :)
In short, it's a fantastic print/cut machine to get started on and you'll certainly make your investment back on it. :)

I know you just mentioned the Roland printers but I use the BN-20 version at work. It’s a stunning printer to use and with everything there are pro’s and cons...one of the con’s is the initial cost of them & if the software is Mac friendly. You can’t fault the print quality. It self calibrates and the blade seems to last a long time for what I’ve seen. It cuts and prints but the downside is that it doesn’t cut all the way through the backing paper so it could make making sticker packs or sheets a little difficult. To save time, I would suggest something that can cut and print in a continuous cycle so it eliminate misalignment however on certain printers you can set print marks in case you need to go back to cutting at a later stage (ie if you laminate your products) Obviously that is your decision to make. I have found that some inks need a little curing time too - especially black ink so bare in mind the turn around time you need. Either way, what ever you invest in will be beneficial to production plus gives you the option to do posters, signs and other large format things lol

  • @rrdcreates

I mean you could up the paper or vinyl quality and get maybe two Cricut makers and one large plotter to do your work. Sell off the explores to help offset the cost. The explore air Cricuts are slower and are the lower quality cricuts than the maker. The maker also opens up the opportunity for more materials should you have ideas that you need to see in action quickly. You mentioned bunting which could be cut out of fabric with the rotary cutter, you could cut stencils to etch on glassware or get into foiling or engraving,
The larger plotter could be used for your higher volume options. Most sticker shops I find have resorted to getting things made in bulk then using that new time to offer new, limited, or exclusive options made in house. If you’re going to make 200qty or something, it is more cost effective to have that outsourced. You can still have your in house staff work on other new ideas and sample batches as they come up. Still plenty of work to do in your growing business.

I'm honestly surprised you've used the Cricuts as long as you have for your scale! Your concept of giving time to your employees makes so much sense. It's really cool to see you try to scale this in-house.

Exciting to see your growth. Your best bet would be a HP Latex. They also do a HP branded Summa cutter, or you could go with a graphtec FC cutter. The Roland BN20 is super slow and eco-solvent printers in general need to be allowed to dry/cure before you can cut the stickers, which is where the HP Latex beats it hands down as Prints come out of the printer ready to cut.

Hi I work in the printing industry and I think the best yet for you is to go with a Roland print & cut printer. I know they are very expensive but in the long run it would be amazing for production plus the software Roland use to print & cut called versaworks is very users friendly compared to for example mimaki printer software that is a lot more technical. And a Roland can print on a range of materials for example poster paper , banner material but I think what could be a game changer for you would be printing designs on garment vinyl and cutting your designs out and heat pressing them onto apparel that would look awesome with your designs. I hope this helped a bit I love your content your shop is amazing 😁😁👏🏾

I use graphtec blades and holders in my silhouette. Pro tip - buy lots of holders and set the blade length on each one for a different material. Then label the cases accordingly. That way you only have to change the blade when it gets blunt rather than have to mess about resetting the blade depth. I have a mat and a blade for each different material. Plus, the Silhouette Business software is so freakin' easy to use. P.s. Daisy for the win! (no bloddy idea how to emoji here)

    Hi Kat,
I never comment either, but I love your videos so much.
I have watched you for a while now, and your journey is amazing 🥰
I love watching small businesses that start from their bedrooms, then grow and grow like yours through determination and a lot of hard work.
I use a Roland BN20 plotter for our cosmetic product labels and my daughter also uses it a sticker company she has too.
I cannot recommend this machine enough. The colours it prints are next level amazing. You can pick them up off eBay for half the price you’d expect to pay from Roland themselves.
But it’s so easy to use. It prints and cuts all all in one. You can get it insured from Roland still even if you buy it second hand from eBay, and their support is amazing. Seriously you won’t look back.
If you need any help or more advice about it, please don’t hesitate to contact me, I’d be happy to help.

sorry I'm watching this late, internet was out for a bit)
if you're considering a large format cutter and printer, you need to consider if you can get the material you want to print on in large format. We use Silhouette Business edition where you can send the same file to all of your cutters (cameo 4's)... so let's do the math, you said you want to do 200+ stickers (I assume the quarter sheet size)... so 4-up, 6 cameo 4's, 24 per run, 10 runs, 240 sheets and the cameo can kiss cut and full cut with the autoblade, so that's 5 minutes per run, about an hours worth of cut time for 240 sticker sheets.

I highly recommend the Silhouette family. The Cameo pro sounds like what you'd need, it's quite large. I love how the machines cut, software is simple and easy to understand. There aren't a lot of tutorials, hacks, or guides for the newest models but it's very easy to figure out a cutting machine after you've dealt with all the cricut issues lol much simpler IMO. I run a little family run sticker business too and I would highly highly recommend any Graphtec plotter. We now own 4 and also a Roland, which are totally worth the high cost as the turn around is so high. We cut packs of 100 large die cut stickers in less than 1 minute on just one machine. eBay have some gems too and you can get some very high quality like-new Graphtec cutters for such a steal at around £400-600.

Hi Catherine! Have you thought about approaching printer companies to see if they will loan you machines to test and review, it’s a win win, you get to test printers without the risk and the company potentially get more sales from your reviews, then buy which one you prefer :) I see so many crafters being sponsored to trial/test equipment so there is no harm in asking :)

  • @elasticxplastic

On your scale I would recommend professional print equipment rather than craft/hobby-grade equipment. One advantage of having the large format separate from the cutter would be the ability to also print other types of products on it. As far as a cutter, get something that cuts fast. Buy both as high quality as you can afford and you will not regret it.
