Thank you so much for making such a difference in my approach to bass. I'm really at the point where I can lay down a bass line and my accomplished son can solo and otherwise play over it. Lots of fun for this 56 year old.
Putting riff # three through 12 bar Blues changes (1/4/5 or A/D/E} sounds great - easy to do in key of A. For the E chord just start riff on open E string.
What makes a Bass Player Intermediate? I'd put myself in that category as a Guitar/Bass player (maybe only just) For Bass I'd think the criteria for being adjudged Intermediate would be: 1: Sound understanding of music theory. 2: Thorough understanding of how to play a Blues progression, straight, quick change, minor, etc. 3: How to listen to the Drum rythym & lock in with the drummers 'Kick' 4: Know when to add 'fills' etc & when to sit back in the Bass pocket and let the music breath & especially play simplistic Bass lines that support the Lead Guitar during a solo.
I feel like an intermediate should be able to write these riffs on the fly. I’m barely literate and am considered a god by a lot of these “are you an intermediate?” bass videos because I can do 3 tool songs that took me 2 weeks on and off each. That has nothing to do with this video though seeing as this is a riff compilation so I don’t know why I said that, nice riffs thanks.
You mentioned Hammer-Ons, Pull-Offs, and Slides. But I think other articulations that are not talked about is String-Bending and Vibrato. And there are four types of Vibrato that come to mind for Bass. The first type of Vibrato is when you bend the string back and forth a number of times. And you can bend it a little or a lot, and you can bend them slow or fast. The second type of Vibrato is the BB King style where you keep a finger on a fret and you just pivot the wrist side to side while the finger stays on the note. The third type of Vibrato is when you slide back and forth in quick succession from one note to another. And the forth type of Vibrato is Neck Bending. But you want to do this carefully because you don't want to brake the neck of your bass. You can look at Billy Sheehan who does this loads. There are some Basses that have tremelo or whammy bars like a guitar. So you could use that instead of the neck bend.
I think what, among many, things that can advance an intermediate player to the next level is learning to properly use mute notes, and when to play notes and when not to play notes. These sound like such simple techniques, but in my experience they are hard to master and make sound effortless.
I’d say progress from beginner to intermediate to advanced player steadily becomes less about what you can already do and more about how long it takes you to pick up something new. Tough to untangle those two things altogether, but it as least a clue how you’re actually doing against the imaginary standard of becoming a real musician. It’s easier to become a musician young because you don’t have those years of practice knowing you aren’t. But one of the only things that defines a truly great player across all instruments is they assimilate new stuff really fast.
In other words literally anyone on earth can play those four bass riffs. Some folks might take a year starting now. Some folks have them mastered after seeing this video one time through. That’s the progression! So an intermediate player would be defined as someone who can play this whole video of riffs accurately in…one half hour sitting? Two?
I enjoy your lessons very much, I just find it a little frustrating not being able to keep up playing along as you teach. Maybe you could slow it down a little the first time around (?) :)
I've always considered myself and experienced beginner, but after seeing this lesson and the comments, maybe I'm an intermediate after all. I've been playing these and/or similar riffs (think Santana catalogue, Eagles, etc.) for quite some time. Gives me some hope!
Intermediate player can create variations on the fly. He/she may not have a perfect technique, but being able to modulate a riff over 4 bars or more is a musical skill that's beyond beginner level.
yeah but to get to higher levels u have to LISTEN to others playing so your brain will have more resource to work with. no beginner can create bass riffs like tool or something as hard.
An intermediate player should have a firm grasp on scales and modes of the scale,be able to improvise any song,be able to pick notes off the fretboard with little effort.and be able to solo for at least 1 minute.....that's my opinion on it anyway 🤔🤔 🙏🙏🤟

Fantastic! Jeffery
Supper happy to hear that…

Love it!
I found that one out too, and adding like a trill/squiggle between the last two notes for a beat kinda spices things up a little bit
Right On!!! I might be better than I thought. This was pretty easy to play. Thank you for the video
Im so excited to learn this ! Thank you for explaining it so clearly! I really got it :-)
Great to know Isabelle! Happy to have helped you out :)

Great instruction, you simplify the process.
Thanks Christopher. Hope you got a lot out of this lesson.

Can cope easily with this, really good and gets your fingers moving.
Brilliant Bev!

Sure thing!
You can also try using the speed controls and start/ stop controls too on yt player
James, how are you finding the P bass neck compared to the Jazz neck? Too chunky or?
The neck on the p bass seems great... doesn’t seem that far off a jazz bass neck in many respects
This man is both 20 years old and 40 years old 😂
Are those flats on that bass?
Absolutely
Very cool lesson, thank you!
Glad you like it! Cheers!
Nice!
Cheers Ted!
Where can i find the loop of this riffs?

Nice list you got there, Keith! Just keep on groovin hard!
Why not just A 0 0 instead of E 5 5?
i way over estimated my skill i need to go back to beginner
Well we’ve got lessons waiting for you...

@@wetji1233 Yeah, it's true for beginners. Intermediate means different things to different people, I guess :-)
@@TheTwangKings dont really matter how great of a player u are one should always listen others playing because everyone has something new to offer

Wow... to me that sounds like an advanced intermediate! Then again ‘intermediate’ is quite a broad spectrum:-)
This sucked
How come?
