In Nicolas Roeg's adaptation of Roald Dahl's novel The Witches, a young boy is vacationing at the seaside with his grandmother when he discovers that the hotel he is staying at is hosting a convention of witches. Eavesdropping on the witches, he learns that the Grand High Witch (Anjelica Huston) has devised a plan to turn all of the children in England into mice. With creature-effects by Jim Henson's Creature Shop, The Witches was the last film Henson worked on before passing away in 1990.

This scene traumatized me the most as a kid. There's such a feeling of doom, claustrophobia, and panic for Luke in this scene. He had no one to protect him. These demons were getting closer to him...and closer...

Right, towards the end of the movie Luke and his grandmother receive the chest of money from the Grand High Witch's room, which has the address book for all the witches in America, that would be a good pick up point for part 2.
A shame it either didn’t too well in the box office. Some cast members probably refused or died before a sequel. Was thought of being made into production.
They didn't catch him in the end SHE did. As usual to get it done she had to do it herself. No wonder she was so pissed at all of them.

I remember watching this movie all the time as a kid. It was on tv at one stage and we recorded it on an old vhs tape. Rewatching it 30 years later and it’s still disturbing.
Notice the look the secretary Miss Irvine was giving the Grand High Witch when she said to exterminate Luke. She was already thinking that this job was just to much. She gave her that "oh this bitch is crazy" stare.
I noticed her look. She was a good witch.

The same yellow dress woman goes under the table but at the next shot at 1:20, she is seen standing until Luke exposes himself by then she could have easily have caught him without having to go under the table. When Luke pushes the table she is least affected but still doesn't catch Luke and it doesn't look like she was helping other witches get to their feet. So she could have easily have caught Bruno between 2:00 onwards.

This movie is full of mysteries, one of which is how it took the witches so long to actually smell Luke, especially given their strong sense of smell!
In the book it was explained that the smell of dog's droppings was weakened if the children had not took a bath from some time, which was the case of the protagonist. That was the reason because the witches couldn't smell him at first

How come they didn't smell Luke at the start of the meeting???
Yeah that's what I thought considering Luke's grandma did point out to Luke in the beginning when she told her storie that the cleaner you are the more a witch could smell you...but haven't said that maybe he did take her advise after and had skipped having bath/shower everyday. That's my guess anyway I could be wrong.
It the book it says that he didn't take a bath for a long time (since they arrived, almost a week) so that's why they didn't smell him :) this is the reason why I didn't want to take baths as a child haha
@80s G.R.L 17 I wondered that too as to why none of them smelled him. I can only guess that witch at 0:02 smelled him because she came close to the spot where he was hiding and when she told everyone at the end that she smells dogs droppings, the other witches then started to focus more on their noses being able to smell him then. However, the Grand High Witch and her secretary should have been able to smell him being the closest ones to him the whole time.
@@cazgoldie813 That's true that Helga said that the cleaner a child is a more a witch could smell a child. Plus, Helga did say that if a child is dirty the witch could smell the dirt on him/her. So if Luke hasn't taken a shower in a long time, he must be dirty so they probably would have smelled the dirt on him.

With regards to their incompetence at their inability to grab him when he's still in the room, it's strange indeed that they just seem to wave their hands aimlessly at him rather than just snatching him right there and then. Perhaps they were just competing and fighting among themselves to be the one who snatched him and maybe get rewarded as a result, this allowed Luke to escape temporarily!
The Grand high witch was right about something, the witches of England are good for nothing worms, an entire room full of them and Luke managed to escape the room the first time round lol

1:32 Luke left his glasses but he had to run otherwise he would have got turned into a mouse and she stepped on them.
When I first heard her said “dogs’ droppings”, I thought that maybe Luke stepped into some real ones. Ew! But as the years went by watching it countless times, I’ve learned that she meant that she smells a child, because the witches hate the smell of children, especially when they’re clean. To them, they smell absolutely disgusting 🤮. For instance, when Bruno was walking in between the witches they cover their noses, acting as if he stinks.
I like how she is almost proud to be the first to notice the stench of dog droppings. I love this movie. It is an obsession for me since I was a kid.
(to me) this movie would be better. if they had college jocks in this. (witches can’t stand the smell of jock sweat) they try to eliminate them with the magic formula. bruno is a frat boy. (thinks he is getting cash) burps then shrinks into a mouse. (see his feet transform in his berkinstocks) as the maid witch picks up his clothes from the stage. the insoles of bruno’s berks are sooo black. (sweating drastically in his berks while on stage) As for Luke he is a newly track and field student. (removed his shoes while the presentation was going on) now witches smell Luke’s socks and shoes.

This movie I must have watched 200 times as a kid!
couple of things:
- what did the maid witch pick up from the floor. when she first smelled Luke? (in different scenes it can be shown her holding something. other scenes there is nothing)
- after Bruno let out a burp as a mouse. there are no socks in his shoes.when Lukes jumps from the stage. there is a black sock.
- exactly how far did Luke think he’d get away with Bruno’s clothes. (what did he plan to do with them)
Luke, no doubt, thought, "Oh no! Busted!"
1:10 -- is this the first hint of the Grand High Witch's assistant (left) turning good? She seems a little disturbed at GHW's ruthless command that a child is to be "exterminated immediately", though if this suddenly causes moral reservations in her, she really hasn't been paying attention to what witches are all about.
If only Luke hadn't forgotten his lightsaber, he could easily slashed his way through those witches.

fun fact: in an older script, Luke tries to sneak over the stage but ends up tripping and crashing the screen down, exposing him to the witches.
also, when he gets to the doors, one of the witches jingles the keys in his face.
He also tries asking a policeman for help.
