- 1. How to pronounce the 'ng' sound:
do NOT pronounce a /g/ sound
tongue in same position as 'g' and 'k' sound
airflow same as when you pronounce the 'm' and 'n' sound
2. Consonant + Vowel:
Examples:
‘thing about'
‘hang out’
What to do:
a. make ng sound
b. release the 'ng' at beginning of next syllable
c. Move mouth into vowel position whilst making 'ng' sound
3. Consonant + Same Position Consonant
Example:
'Eating curry'
What to do:
a. Make ng sound.
b. Tongue stays in same position.
c. Simply make airflow for next sound
4. Consonant + Different Position Consonant:
Example:
'Thing to do'
What to do:
a. make ng sound
b. keep making ng sound as you move to position of next consonant
c. release next consonant WITHOUT making 'g' sound
#1 The area this affects most in connected speech is when the next syllable after an ng sound begins with a vowel
#1 thing you can do to practice is to write down a word beginning in each English vowel sound (ideally that you commonly use) - one word for all 20 vowels.
Practice pronouncing an 'ing' word ending before each of the words and releasing the ng sound at the beginning of the word WITHOUT a 'g' soung and WITHOUT a pause...
do this and you'll say GOOD BYE to this common and embarrassing pronunciation mistake forever!
That was really helpful, thank you!
