Here is a brief translation of the video. I have only started learning Japanese and still make lots of mistakes, so please let me know if you find any error or emission :)
[0:00] Hello everyone, this is Matsusue from Bonsai Suishoen. This time we will answer questions from an enthusiast on some perplexing issues about Japanese quince ("cho-ju-bai"長寿梅).
[0:15] [Gak: From one of our customer at Suishoen: these days my Japanese quince is showing many yellow leaves, and looks like they are falling off. What is happening here?] Japanese quince grows as a shrub in nature. In comparison, Gak, we don't quite see a japanese maple growing in this shape, do we? Even if we let maples grow, it wouldn't turn into this shape. [Gak: yes.] Usually for trees such as maples, there will be a single main trunk, which later diverges into two smaller ones.
[1:03] Japanese quinces likes to develop plenty of basal shoots ("yagome"やご芽). The branches on the top are old branches. How about the basal ones, Gak? Do you think they are old or young shoots? [Gak: Young.] Right, these are indeed young branches from this year. Because they are young, they will keep growing from the root base. If the old branches are like grandparents, then these young basal shoots are like grandchildren. In comparison, the grandchildren will naturally in much better health, and have much higher rate of metabolism. If you leave them alone they will grow and thicken very fast.
[2:06] However, in the making of bonsai, it is the grandparent branches that we must keep. [Gak: Ah, I see.] Because it would be impossible to keep the grandparents alive while retaining all of these basal shoots, please take these new shoots off where they are not needed. We must very carefully nurture the old branches.
[2:32] On the other hand, due to metabolic processes, Japanese quince does tend to turn yellow around this time of the year. It just happens sometimes, and does not mean there is anything fundamentally wrong with the tree. It's just that if you leave the basal shoots here, there is a good chance the old branch on the top will weaken or wither. Keep this in mind, don't cut back too hard at the crown, and increase the strength in these horizontal branches.
[3:10 ] Besides Japanese quince, satsuki azalea ("satsuki"皐月) also naturally forms a shrub at the root base. [Gak: such as ...?...] Correct. These species tends to be weaker at the top. If we cut back too hard on the top, and let the sides grow, the top might actually wither, leaving only the sides in good health. Therefore the the maintenance is very different from that for a maple tree. [Gak: The exact opposite of species like shimpaku.] Yes, exactly the opposite. Therefore as long as we keep these points in mind, we should be able to take good care of our Japanese quinces.
[3:52] [Gak: I see. After the yellow leaves fall off, will new bud come out in their place then?] Yes, new shoot will come out in their place, but first we need to take off these basal shoots now. The other thing is that we need to strengthen these horizontal branches, and to reconstruct these tiny little branches a bit. Just be careful not to cut back too hard on the top here. [Gak: Ah, I see.]
[4:33] This time, we answered question from an enthusiast, and talked about the care and cultivation of Japanese quince in the beginning of summer. That is all for today's video. Thank you very much for your attention.
